  • Back in 1956, a poll conducted with Marin residents found that 87.7 percent wanted a BART line that could take them across the Bay. But despite the overwhelming public support, why did this plan fall through? Myles Bess takes a look back in our KQED archives to explore why a SF-to-Marin County line came to a grinding halt.

Glad to see that the record got corrected on this! The Golden Gate Bridge Authority killing BART to Marin was a travesty!

Whoever said no to this whole thing should be switched out and fired. BART should be in Marin. They should have BART in Marin, San Mateo, South San Jose, and more of Santa Clara County. I think it’d be cool if BART had a Gilroy extension from, say, Milpitas to Gilroy. Or something. Maybe we’ll make the Milpitas to Gilroy portion an eBART train. You know those trains that they have in Contra Costa county on the Antioch line, extending from Pittsburgh Baypoint East to Antioch, and eventually potentially to Brentwood, Tracy, and more. maybe we’ll just have to switch out the E with an S. And I think it would be cool if the BART went through South San Jose. Then I can take BART to school. Also Cupertino, Mountain View, Los Altos, potentially Los Altos Hills? Hopefully they make it by 2100.

You just educated someone who was born and raised in San Francisco something new about Bart!
