Male cicadas are so loud that they have an adaptation to disengage their own tympanic membranes (bug ears) because their cry is so loud that they would otherwise deafen themselves
There is no reason for cicadas to be as loud as they are. We have MILLIONS of cicada shells in our yard and woods, and hundreds of thousands of cicadas flying around here and it's deafening if I go near the woods 😭 my poor head is always hurting lol. I'm glad my dog has been helping by hunting them but even she's getting tired of them lmao
@@horaciokanashiro-hv2zn I'm confused by your wording. I have an XL dog, and she's good with my "leave it" command. So I let her snack on them for a while then tell her to leave it and she won't eat them. I think she understands too many upsets her tummy, because now she doesn't eat them as much as she did when the cicadas first emerged 😅
I'm curious if the two "speakers" on each cicada are tuned to the same, or different frequencies. Like a car horn has two tones to get attention better than a single one.
Crickets produce the chirping sound by rubbing part of the front wing against part of the back. Not with their legs. Edit: My bad it's actually just both of the front wings
^^^ I worked with crickets this past semester, and I really wanted to see them chirping in person. It’s difficult because they usually stop chirping if they see you coming up to them. I finally got to see it, and it’s so cool how their two wings rub against each other because you wouldn’t expect that small of a movement to make such a prominent sound
In my back yard right now. They sound like rattlers. Its ANNOYING. One flew down my husbands front shirt yesterday and man he stripped down so quickly to his waist. I cried laughing seein it on the ring cam
You know nothing about that noise they make. A few years ago, they came out in droves. We had 4 cycles of that sound. 1 cycle would start as one ended. For 4 rotations every day from dawn til dusk, and even at night, for 5 weeks straight. All you could hear outside my house was their sound. It took me 2 weeks to finally be able to sleep with out there sound after wards.

nope grasshoppers have tiny ridges on their rear leg when they rub it against its wings it makes sounds on the other hand crickets have a file like knife on the edge of their wing its like a edge lump on their right wing on the left wing theres also tiny ridges and they rub their wings together making that annoying noise that they got always katydids do the same as crickets
“Theyre really, really loud.”
“AAAAAAAAAAAAAA”
"YEEEEEEEEEEE"

@@horaciokanashiro-hv2zn thank you for the warning though! I make sure my pup doesn't eat too many 💜💙💚
Gotta attract the ladies. How will they know you're there if you don't scream loud enough 😂
Move💀
I didn't know cicadas were local to me until I moved 30 minutes away.
I feel like I'm a main character of an anime movie every time I hear them now 😂
So basically Cicadan booty calls?
They basically adapted to become the most annoying bug on the planet for no reason at all.
When that guy was holding that cicada the cicada was like “hey dude, found any of those women?”

It's a common misconception but I'm still surprised it was left in
Fun fact:
Cicadas is a place in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia.
If you get really close to a tree with male cicadas
Me: they will jump on you
In my back yard right now. They sound like rattlers. Its ANNOYING. One flew down my husbands front shirt yesterday and man he stripped down so quickly to his waist. I cried laughing seein it on the ring cam
Love them.
Wrong they don't rub their back legs together, they have specialty adapted little scrapers that actually make the noise.
Male cicadas belike: "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA-"
There’s one outside my window. I’m losing my mind.
Not a vid of cicadas doing it😭😭
did you take some of those clips by yourself?just curious
Yes.
Bro im really traumatized
I have cicadas everywhere in my backyard and in my town
I think the sound is satisfying ❤
Crickets don't rub their legs on their wings to produce sound: They rub their wings together. These A.I. Channels stay dumb.
