Once the basecoat is down, I move on to teaching how to dry brush, which is the primary painting technique used in this beginners series. #drybrushing is super easy to do and doesn't take a ton of time to master. The dry brush technique can turn an okay model into an amazing one.
At the end of this video you will see a bare plastic PLA 3d print transform with only primer and dry brushing with acrylic paints!

Part 3 is coming soon 2/8! If you haven't already watched Part 1, please watch it here -->czcams.com/video/H6DoIZNce3s/video.html
I thought a primer is necessary before using acrylic paint since it helps the latter stick firmly
Now I learned that I can simply use acrylic paint as a primer
Thanks a lot for the videos , they are very informative
Dude… I can watch you paint all day. This is straight chill mode stuff for me. Learning so much from your channel!
Thanks so much man! I’m excited to get to know you in the patreon!!!
I have to say your videos are some of the best on CZcams period. You cover off absolutely everything and give the viewer confidence and answer all my questions before I even ask them. Really amazing stuff my dude.
Wow. Thank you so much! I appreciate the comment. I wish you the best of luck on your future projects!
the color change is ver dramatic i see the brush importance GREAT JOB !
THANKS! all about technique.
Sometimes you feel that you wasted your time with a video, but yours is worth my time for sure. Thank you for the detailed video. I had a lot of ideas and you just made me feel more confident to try them. Great job.
It's always so good to see others using the Plaid and FolkArt craft paints for their 3d prints! I've tried the "expensive" paints, but I actually prefer the craft paints in most circumstances. Great job and great tutorial!
I think the more affordable craft paints if used right can produce amazing results. That being said I do also love the more pricy ones like Vallejo paints. I think their is a time and place for each. But as a whole I love my craft paints. I was thinking about doing a face off video. Paint the same model using "expensive paints" vs. "affordable paints" be kinda cool to see the results. Thanks for the comment love to hear peoples opinions hope your still liking the series :)
@@ItsMeaDMaDe please do it!
Thanks for making these tutorial videos, They’re very helpfully
Awesome that was my goal. Glad they are useful for you.
So enjoy these videos. Now i have a better understanding of why you should add water to the paints and the dry brushing instructions have definitely already elevated my painting skills 10 fold Cant wait for the next video
That’s so great!!! Glad to here they are helping you. Next one will come out next Tuesday.
I'm really glad I found your channel, tons of help, thank you!
I’m glad you found me too! 😅best of luck on your painting projects!
You mentioned that for the spray cans you use either White Gray or Black depending if the paint job is lighter or darker is that same with using the acrylic paint ? ShouldI use white painter when I am painting in lighter colours?
thanx man yr rly teacher
Thanks!!! Hope you liked it!
This has some great information. Thank you! Have you ever painted a baby Yoda? That’s what I’m working on now and I would love to see your rendition of him.
Thanks so much! No I haven’t but I printed a life sized version that took 9 days to print. I plan on painting him. Still trying to wrap my head around how I am going to tackle him. 😅 he will be a video on the future.
thnx ❤️❤️
Glad to make it. Hope it helped!!
Can a model be primed just using a base paint like black? Or do you have to use a specific primer?
Yeah the main idea is to give you a good base layer. Some filaments don’t take paint well and that is when I use a rattle can primer.
so you can prime with just acrylic paint no primer?
Hi. Thank you for your video. I am learning a lot. Just a question. Any reason for the prime to be a black color? Can I use another color? thanks!
You can prime a model what ever color you want. The purpose is to create an even layer of paint to allow the following layers to stick to the model well.
Another easy to follow guide! Thank you!
I do have 1 question, though. I started from painting gunpla many years ago and people from the community emphasized on using thinner instead of water when doing hand brush. However, I've seen several people that painted minis and 3D prints prefer to just use water to thin their paints. My question is, what are the + and - of using water instead of thinner? Thank you once again!
Thanks glad you enjoyed the video.
So… im actually have been asked that same question multiple times. So I am recording a video answering your question I will release it right after this series is all out. It’s a loaded question that isn’t easy to answer in a comment. 😅
@@ItsMeaDMaDe Alright! Thanks, much appreciated. Good luck with the series!
❤
The video is really good. I wish you continued success, can you please make a figure of Spider-Man, good luck
I’ve been wanting too. It’s on my list for sure!! Thanks for the comment!
Can you prime with a rattle can like you displayed , and then air brush the model ? Or do you have to use the airbrush vellejo primer if your planning to airbrush ?
Oh no you don’t have to use airbrush. I use rattle can a lot. But only when it’s warm outside. You don’t get a good bond when it’s cold outside and where I live it was still cold when I made this video.
@@ItsMeaDMaDe thanks for the response ! One more question, if your using acrylic paint to prime the figure, can you always use black , even if the figure will be painted a lighter Color, like yellow or pink ? Or should you use white acrylic paint ?
@@kosta6137 yeah your primer can be any color. It’s really just intended to give a good coat of paint on your model so the other paints can adhere good.
Can you wear the magnifying glasses over your prescription glasses?
Honestly I have never tried cause the magnification makes me see really good without my glasses.
Hey Chris what do you use to dry the models? is that a heater or just a fan? what settings do you put it on to help dry?
Yes it’s a little space heater. I rarely turn the heat on it. I typically just use the fan function. It never takes long with air blowing on it. A tiny fan would work great. Since this video I also got a tiny solar turntable that spins the part for me while the fan is running. I have to just say if you ever use heat to dry be careful don’t dry them too fast. It can not only melt your piece but if the paint dries to fast it can crack with some types of paints.
@@ItsMeaDMaDe I actually made a spinner just like yours how much was the solar one that you purchased that would be awesome if I didn’t have to sit there and spin it by hand.
@@PowerAirSimulations it was only $9 on Amazon it’s pretty great I’ve been using it a lot.

@@ItsMeaDMaDe thanks Chris I appreciate it
Everytime i do this i get brush stokes - you dont :( How can i do it but without the brush strokes??
Will this model print fine on a ender 3v2? I want to purchase the file and follow along with your instructions but not sure if it’s a beginner friendly print !
I can’t speak speak specifically about that machine. But I did print my on an ender 3 pro.
Another great video! Thank you!
I do have a question for you.
I'm using acrylic paint on a 3d print and I'm trying to make it look metal.
I'm using Createx Wicked Color Pearl Silver for the top coat.
My base coat should be black I believe, but I don't have a gloss black paint.
I think you need the gloss black base to make the pearl pop right?
Do you know if I did the black base and then did a gloss clear coat and then did the silver would that work the same?
I'm going to actually pickup some plastic spoons to as well to test.
First! Thank you glad you liked it!
2. You are on the right track. Get some spoons and test first always! I always save failed prints too so I can test on.
3. I have use a gloss coat on a matte black before you get the same results. So I think if you go that route you should be heading in the right direction. I’ve never used that specific metal paint. But you might want to do a test with some grays too. Just to see the difference might be worth testing a spoon or two.
It’s hard to give a straight answer with that kinda stuff when I don’t have specifically what you have to do proper tests. But it sounds like it should work.
@@ItsMeaDMaDe Thank you!
How many minutes does it take for the first layer of paint to dry in front of the fan or without fan?
Depends on the paint and how much paint you put on it. It’s really hard to say. You should be able to see it’s dry and when it’s dry to the touch.
@@ItsMeaDMaDe Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience with us. I just discovered your channel. I will definitely watch all your videos. Thanks again 😊
any chance this stl is available?
Yup the link is in the description.
To my untrained eye, this model, with all those nice cracks between the rocks, looks like a prime subject for washing. What made you choose to instead paint the whole thing the “shadow” color and then drybursh the “base” color everywhere?
Yes it could of been washed easily. This is just a beginners series and I didn’t want to add a bunch of extra stuff to it besides paint and a brush when it came to the painting portion. I just wanted to focus on helping people understand the dry brush technique. With any paint job there are infinite ways to paint it. This one is no different. 😁
I also realize I didn’t answer your question about the two coats. You do a base coat to see if your model has any imperfections they really show up if you do. Then you can sand it down or apply more filler. Then you paint the model. Primer also helps with adhesion to the print.
@@ItsMeaDMaDe Thanks for the super fast reply!
I was asking because I'm about to paint my first model and I'm heavily drawing on your older tutorial (the Hulk one) where you used a wash. My model is a stone tower where I thought a wash would be perfect for shading the cracks between the stone bricks.
Now CZcams recommended to me this new tutorial where you didn't use a wash and even took a little jab at the Hulk model, so I was afraid you may have discovered some issue with using ink washes on printed models.
P.S.: Sorry for replying from an alt, but it's not coming through on my main. Ever since CZcams removed dislikes, they really turned those “spam” filters up to 11 and my main seems to be hit particularly hard. Apparently, I'm not allowed to make more than 1 comment a day.
@@hellterminator2295 so I created the new one to help people new to painting 3D prints. The last one was just really broad and just had a lot of tips. You can follow either one. I still use the old way. Washes are great. I use them for stone all the time. Good luck with your paint job. If your on Instagram tag me in your pic I’d love to see it!
Lol my wife was with me when I was looking for makeup sponges to spread bondo and I could not find them so I asked and the girl started asking my wife what she was looking for. I said excuse me they are mine
Ha ha that’s awesome that has happened to me too.
