Welcome back to ProGuitarShop and ToneReport.com. Today, we’re parsing the Syntax Error, from Alexander Pedals. The Syntax Error is a highly functional glitch machine that takes its inspiration from the first wave of digital technology. With the new Neo series and its presets, MIDI/Expression functionality, Alexander harnesses the raw instability of old processors and digital converters to bring you four separate modes of operation, each with two global controls of Mix and Sample, and with two mode-specific knobs, plus a third bonus parameter for each mode. The four modes offer up a slice of vintage computing, with Stretch, Cube, Ring and Freq modes for your bit-crushing pleasure. Stretch mode samples your incoming signal into a buffer and then gives you options to manipulate every aspect of the buffer for mind-bending glitches that add new dimensions to your sound. Cube mode feeds your signal through a cubic distortion function with a resonant filter in place of a tone control. Ring mode activates a ring modulator that replaces the typical waveform with a random sample-and-hold LFO with plenty of flexibility. Freq mode gives a fixed-interval pitch shifter with the ability to completely corrupt the algorithm for a wide range of broken modulation and spiraling delay tones. You can fully configure the Syntax Error by powering up with the Select button pressed, letting you adjust everything from expression capabilities, MIDI data, ramping functions and even LED brightness. And just like all Alexander Pedals, the Syntax Error is made from the finest bits - Hudba
Months later I still comeback to this demo to hear Andy's Castlevania cover
Five years later and is still amusing to listen
Andy knows gaming and guitars. This guy is the shit.
I always had him down as a check shirt old timey guy. Turns out he programs his eurorack for some tiktok-ers.
What a horrible night to have a curse.
What a horrible night to have no money for this cool pedal
Best Andy opener ever? Amazing.
The perfect pedal for Nintendocore
I had to double check that I clicked on the right video for a second... Was totally not expecting Castlevania.
Can't believe you pulled Castelvania in a demo... That's epic!
Andy plays Castlevania (!!!!!!!!). This straight male is now firmly in love... with Andy. It was only infatuation before this demo. That Castlevania intro pushed me over the edge. I'm a fool for Andy.
Suckem off
Was that Castlevania??? hahahahahaha... I knew it was original Nintendo music... hahahahaha
I purchased a NES mini console a few months ago and played Castlevania after more than 25 years - and now I hear the melody here... can't believe 😄👏
Finally! There is a good review of this pedal being played by someone who knows what they're doing. All the other videos demoing the Syntax Error sounded like crap. I had a feeling that Andy would do the pedal justice.
Thank you, John. Appreciated
You're welcome. Keep it up, keep selling me pedals haha
John Ghost
Spot on!
Andy has a huge talent for intuiting uses for every pedal ranging between classic toanz and arty weirdness. His playing is always rockin and never wanky. He’s my go-to guy for effects reviews.
I was literally gonna say the same thing.. beat me to it.
You do effects pedals justice. Jexus does synths justice. That’s a massive compliment.
The only man in this planet that can make this pedal sounds amaizing
Epic castlevania guitar jam.
This thing is very versatile, so many sounds in it
holy shit andy how do you ALWAYS knock it out of the park with these openers
i like the little "2600" reference on the side...ha
Not even kidding, my jaw dropped when I heard Castlevania. Great work!
Does Andy have a retrogaming channel too?
Angry Guitar Pedal Nerd
The songs you write for the description section of each demo are fantastic. This one especially
Nice cover! I have never heard a glitch pedal sound that good.
"made from the finest bits". good one, Andrew. made me lol.
Castlevania opener!!!
Castlevania's Vampire Killer in a pedal review. Truly awesome.
ANYONE who demos a pedal with Castlevania deserves some kind of award. Holy crap!!!!
Andy does it again!
That reverse thing around 6:30 is freaking amazing. I imagine I wouldn't be able to make it sound that cool lol.
Yeah! totally agree! But I don't know how much is the Syntax error, and how much is from the disater area pedal...
Thanks Andy! This is the only demo of this pedal that maters.
Great! Gonna get me one of these; go 30 years back in time and make a fortune making music for Commodore 64 games with ease :)
thanks for all your videos Andy. i refer to them whenever i want a pedal
Personally, I love this pedal and how it colors riffs and jokes aside I love the sample-y arcade-ish sounds it produces making music fun and the arpeggiated trails are great. Giant Robot I need you right away.
Wow, this sounds like video game music to the max! That reverse sounds like a cinematic after a boss scene. Andy you crushed this one... nice post editing on the glitchy glitchy glitchy computer and blue screen :)
major props on the castelvania \m/
Love it! Something fresh after a while
Crazy awesome. Great demo, thanks!
Castlevania!!! Fuck yeah!! Andy you are the man!! I know you work for Reverb now, but you're still an amazing musician! Thank you sir!
Andy, have I told ya how you make my day better?
A million thumbs up for jamming Castlevania
That intro is magnificent.
Great review. Thanks
Awesome opener!
OMG! I was planning on playing Simon's Quest as soon as I caught with Tone Report!
one of my all time fave nes scores.
With a ring modulator who needs drugs
That looks awesome.
Reverse Lo-fi delay is really surprising. I've never heard of such a feature.
Nice Max Headroom cameo at the end there!
lmao, Andy you are truly the best.
Andy the real Guitar Hero!
Coolest demo EVER!!!!!!!
I come back to this regularly just to listen to the Castlevania cover.
Thank you, it's one of my proudest moments!
Andy
Amazing !!! Castelvania !!
You now prossess Dracula's balls.
ryanern18 I laughed way too hard at this.
Fucking Andy man, you never disappoint. I'm always pleasantly surprised with these intros, you never know what you'll bust out.
The Fix "One Thing Leads to Another"?
I think it should be a contest. Andy plays an old 80's riff somewhere in the demo, first to get it wins the pedal.
That's really cool
Andy is my spirit animal
AWESOME!!!
wooo wooowo woowowowowoowoow.... amazing sound and ideasss...
The samples I heard from SNAMM videos had me thinking this pedal was shit, but now Andy is making me buy it :'( My poor wallet
Fantastic
LOVE it
I'm old, tones like these emanating from the ole lady's kid's video game consoles always made me Lol out loud . Now get off my lawn, but leave the freaky phaser sounds
@3:25 sounds like a new Queens of a Stone Age riff xD
Castlevania!!!
Castlevania FTW!
Godlike!
Castle Vania.... nice intro
Next you should do Golden Axe :)
Muh hed jus asploded 😱
Castlevania. Insane.
Andy is a god
I am a simple man. I watch Andy's videos and then I ruin myself buying pedals.
Cool but I'm saving for the Meris Ottobit Jr.
so good!!! now I want to play contra
I meant castlevania
lol
Matching shirt and bass ;-)
This sounds great. 7:42 sounds a little like the foldback setting on source audio's multiwave distortion - anyone remember that?
It didn't sound quite like a standard octave fuzz to me, suppose I'll have to get one to find out :D.
Ok I've had another listen and I think you're right. I stand corrected.
What is the 5:10 - 5:20 part from? It sounds so familiar.
NIce!
CASTLEVANIA! :O
AWESOME demo. I honestly can't see a real use for this pedal, though, except as a novelty.
It has so many uses.
“But enough talk... have at you!”
Great demo. It's just a little to wild for me :)
Andy out plays the Minibosses. Not surprising.
That "freak" mode reminds me of the rainbow machine.
Well that was frightening. 😂
Can another MIDI controller footswitch be used with this pedal to access the presets, or does it have specifically be the Disaster Area DMC controller?
I use a simple momentary switch.
Intro reminds me of Gentle Giant!
Kerry Minnear (the keyboard player of Gentle Giant) used to do a lot of game soundtracks back in the day, so it is not far fetched to make the comparison
Edit: Also adding to the similarities is this song by Gentle Giant czcams.com/video/eyZ0U93D7oU/video.html&ab_channel=VelvetGreen
"Games sounds maker" pedal
Dat "Vampire Killer"
Please demo the mothership 2 there's only one demo and it's not up to your standard lol
Loving the vampire killer !
Hey Alexander Pedals: all you had to do was put “Castelvania” on this pedal and I wouldn’t have to think about buying it.
Haha, best cover ever.
Beginning licks and such sound so original era Nintendo....
I suspect this is like something like the Catalinbread Csidman. Cool in theory, an insane unusable nightmare in practice.
I pretty much agree; some of the modulation tones (flangey-chorus) he was getting in the middle of the video were kinda cool and maybe usable, the rest is just unusable bullshit. This pedal seems really cool, until you try to actually use it in a song...unless your doing some sort of electro-noise rock thing (e.g. black dice), then it might be ok.
Exactly. Honestly I find any pedal that isn't yet another dirt/chorus/delay/reverb/etc. refreshing and I applaud any pedal companies who try and mix things up a bit. But.. yeah, they still have to be usable :/
6:40...I don't know about you guys, but it may be worth it, just to be able to pull off backwards guitar...any other pedals, that can be had on the cheap, that can do that??
Digitech Digidelay. That pedal is cheap and does an excellent reverse delay. It allows you to blend in your dry signal with it too, which it's successor the Hardwire DL-8 won't do.
James Garcia Digitech Digidelay Digital Delay X-Series Silver
reverb.com/item/6167126-digitech-digidelay-digital-delay-x-series-silver
James Garcia take a look at the Danelectro Back Talk, that thing is insane (and pricey)
Finally a pedal I don't need.
Are you...taking the pitch?
Andy, you're now my official waifu. Having played Castlevania's Vampire Killer is the only proof of love I need.
Iván A. I think you mean husbando
The pitch / delay feature in this thing totally "steals" (borrows?) from the Rainbow Machine. Nobody did that before Earthquaker Devices. Right?
DigiTech Space Station is the first place I heard it. Not that the Rainbow Machine isn't great...
Great spot - I didn't know that! Thanks!
I think the amp name is familiar to anyone who has worked with java script.
Hey! What's that green bass?
Daniel Santiago E. I think it's a Reverend signature model
