There’s no icons because there’s no mystery around these players anymore. We judge them on a minute to minute basis every single game. We know all their flaws and can’t build a narrative where they don’t have any. The negative things get highlighted because that what creates views. If an instagram page posts something positive about a player, it’s never just people reacting to the positive. It’s people either bringing up the negative or twisting that players postive moment to compare it to someone else and make it negative. Every single ”legend” was flawed and had terrible moments but they didn’t get judged on a game to game basis. Everyone talks about Jordan’s or Bird’s aura because there was mystery around those guys.

Negativity definitely Sells, but credit to Rich for addressing it and breaking it down. He's spot on about the media destroying the legacies of great modern day players by creating false narratives . For example, they constantly criticise and magnify every decision and performance of lebron whilst simultaneously glorifying everything mj did. This is a dangerous and disgusting trend cause it doesn't give you the real picture and diminishes lebron's greatness. Imagine if mj's greatness was constantly questioned throughout his career for the absurd reason that he din't have as many rings as bill russell or total career points as kareem. That would have created the narrative that he underachieved and isn't as great as the other two, however that's exactlywhat the media is doing with bron's legacy. Btw even Mj had multiple nights where he shot 3or 4/16 and he even had a losing record of 219-228 in his first five years before scottie and phil jackson arrived, but you'll never hear about it in the media cause they have a bias towards players from the 80s and 90s. Bottom line is that ups and downs are part of the process in team sports and every single great player has struggled at some point, and found themselves in a bad team or had a bad series and that musn't overlook all the great things that they have achieved throughout their careers.

He's not lying. People to this day still bring up "lebron couldn't beat jj barea" 14 years ago and that same mavs team won over 60 games, swept kobe, beat durant harden Westbrook effortlessly. Lebron as a baby literally dismantled the pistons team by himself in the palace and nobody even mentions it. He did things none of the legends even remotely came close to but gets half the praise that someone might of gotten in the 70s 80s 90s. After that mavs series he with whoever you gave him made it to the finals for a straight decade. Team after team after team, Co player after Co player after Co player the guy is in year 21 about to demolish what we believed people do in their late 30s early 40s and it's like "oh ya cool" the guy is the goat. He's a legend. And because of all the media heads and click bait it's watered it right down. NVM 21 straight years in the media age and not even a parking ticket to his name. Let's run Jordan's private life through social media age.. Barkley... bird any of them and you'd see them snap in the first year with the media pressure. Jordan literally retired the 2nd time because the reports in news papers was to stressful on him

Beating an aging team like the Pistons? To me, Steph Curry is the perfect mix of an athlete who has a presence in pop-culture/social media. He's a generational talent who will make roughly $450 million (or more, depending on how long he plays) in NBA contracts and reportedly will make $1 billion from Under Armour (plus his numerous other endorsements) and doesn't shove his social media in our faces. His commercials are silly and self deprecating and his Instagram doesn't have this "LOOK AT ME" vibe that so many other players have. When I think about the high school kids of today who care way more about their social media and "highlights" and building their brand than they do playing their sport, it saddens me to know so many of those guys will flame out because they didn't put the work in. They might still end up with a lot of money, but I still consider it a failure that society allows this. These kids will learn nothing except that they can make money by being arrogant, egotistical, and making sure everything about is about themselves.

An Icon is an image that is similar to a thing but a simplified version of it. A stick figure is an icon of a person. players today will be seen as more complete people and future fans will have more depth when looking back in history. But the history - when read will establish the icon of the player. as this will be the point where the player is separate form their image.

We don't have as many icons because mass media have less power, the information is spread out and ppl live in their bubbles on the internet.
These guys are a little bit older than me but forgot the power television and mass media had the last century, it does not compare to what we have today with social media where opinions are niched, you can find haters and fans all over the internet and they're in their bubbles. Mass media talks to everybody, it creates mass culture that reaches all tribes and foster public discussions + big media had so much public faith, different from now when everybody hates it.
We will never have a global icon like Michael Jackson again... not because there will never be someone as talented as him, but because mass media is on decline. The whole world used to turn on the television every night and watch the same shows, now there are thousands of entertainment options and thats something newer generations will never experience.

Kobe didn’t care if people liked him & MJ strived to be the best obviously, but he never in essence won & then turned around & said, “Do you love me now? Or what about the big men that were coming into the league and all of sudden the game changed to a guard dominant 5 out game. Andre Drummond was a monster for a few seasons now he is a role player. Never heard anything bad about him. Josh Smith was scolded for being a tweener. Now small forward and power forward are interchangeable. Could this guy make any more excuses for Lebron. The media and social media are helping your man get more attention, endorments, and money in general. Jordan has the biggest brand and name despite not playing in the social media era. Kobe is more beloved and respected than Lebron and his championship runs ended at the beginning of the social media era. Lebron has benefitted from his era so stop making complaints and excuses.

Golly! The reason LeBron is not an icon LIKE HE CLEARLY WISHES TO BE is because HE overpromised and underdelivered. Sounds insane? LeBron is the only one who repeatedly attempt to say he's the greatest of all time. LeBron is the one who, instead of just being his badass self, consistently invoked "the Ghost" and other players/eras claiming he was better. Like Jeff Van Gundy said: "Comparison is the enemy of joy." Now we got Rich Paul himself out here with a bucket, carrying water for LeBron because Shannon Sharpe and Nick Wright as well as all the ex players who get the talking points sent to them in the group chat were not enough to coerce us into giving LeBron what he wants, apparently.

Larry bird was the best shooter of his time. That’s why the idea that he wouldn’t be a top 5 3 point shooter is so blasphemous to his fans. There’s more to it than a simple numbers breakdown

There was no social media in the past. So you were forced to go off what you see. Now you can manual maneuver the narrative where you’d like it to go. Lebron & klutch are great at planting seeds, manipulating narratives. So now you don’t have only the game to base your opinion on. If there was just basketball and nothing else to go on these modern players legacy would be completely different & not in a positive way. There’s such an advantage to 24/7 coverage as opposed to framing it as if it’s a burden lol

Thats why u cant talk bad about lebron. And all the media giving him excuses for all his failures and make him a role model. Who cares if a basketball player is a good father, I and family man. Barkley used to critic him and bron went personal with him on internet to bash him. Is this cool paul?
