- In this video I compare the Olympus MJU ii (Olympus Stylus Epic) against it's predecessor the MJU i. I go over the difference in optics and general usability and then take them both out for a spin.
Music by myself.
@samsonarnettroughley
filmed on a sony a6300 and an iphone.
Thankyou
Was thinking about making this comparison video as well and stumbled upon yours! Great work. Hurt me to hear that you got both for less than 20 pounds lol
Great comparison video. I ended up purchasing the MJU I and couldn’t be happier with it.
really useful, I was struggling which to buy for so long
Thank you for the insightful video! I really like your shooting style.
Probably the best answer everyone was looking for!!! you my friend are going to HEAVEN
Great video ! Was contemplating buying one for months as I already had a mju zoom 105 found for 20 euros on a flea market and wanted to see if the fixed focal lens was that much better. But because of the high price never bought one. A friend who knows my analog passion offered me an old camera his grandmother was not using anymore...I can't express how happy i was when i found out he gave me a mju I panorama (dont give a ish about the panorama mode but its the exact same as the mju I except that crappy letter boxing you can chose to put or not)
Very helpful and too the point. Thanks!
You are one cool and chill dude! Love the content and your calm narration!
thankyou !
Really great video, man! Can’t believe how cheaply you picked up the mju ii 🤯
Been contemplating on which one to buy since the mju ii is crazy expensive especially now two years after this video. Thank you for the comparison! 👌🏻
No problem!
Super helpful video. Well done! You just saved me a lot of money!!
glad to help :)
Very insightful vid, man, thank you. Just curious - how do you know the mju ii prefers to shoot wide open @ f/2.8 as much as possible rather than stopping down more often as the mju 1? Is it based on the look of your resulting images? I’d always believed the opposite to be true and thought the f/2.8 thing was more of a marketing gimmick than anything, since the camera’s meter would probably opt for smaller apertures unless you disabled the flash and shot lower ISO film stocks.
I remember both the Mju and Mju II being launched. I always thought the II to be a backwards step - the Mju is in my opinion an absolute classic design……….
Brilliant thorough video ✨
Thankyou !
My niece has been shooting film lately and she wanted to get a point and shoot - found a good deal on a mju ii, but someone beat me to the punch on the Bay - so, this led me to wonder about the mju i and your video helped me choose. Thanks!
Happy to hear that !
Nice video, thought my screen was dirty when showcasing the pics. haha
thank you for this video!
Loving your channel man! Looking forward to more! Subscribed ✊🏼
thankyou !

I chucked my MJUii in the bin about 5 years ago thinking it was obsolete in the digital age. The pics I took with it came out better than the ones in this vid though. Mostly urban scenes in south London during the day. Wish I'd kept it now. And then there's the story about my USSR built Lomo. Damn!!
I happen to have a olympus mju-1 sitting on a storage box, cant wait to use it.
go out and take some stuff with it, such a great little camera.
nice photos samson
Thanks for the video I may have to pick up the mju1 after watching this
You should!
Not gonna lie I’m a sucker for people putting stickers on cameras! I’ve also shot both and wouldn’t mind either!
Great video! I definitely prefer the ergonomics of the Mju I over the Mju II.
thankyou man
Your assessment of these cameras is exactly the same as people were saying in the 90's when teh Mju ii was launched. Its ergonomics were criticised people said they missed photographs because the shutter button was hard to locate with the camera to the eye. People said it was too small. The Mju ii was also criticised for being flimsy, to much structure was shaved off to make it smaller. I remember people looking for old stock of the Mju i. I have both cameras and like you I prefer the Mju i even though the Mju ii lens is better, the Mju i ads up to a better means of making photographs.
quite right.
How do you create a white backgroud for the images in your video editing ?
What's the difference between these and the Olympus Stylus Zoom ##'s? Just that the ones that zoom, can zoom, right? And are slightly bigger than the more popular versions that are shown in this video?
nice video and explanation in details.
Glad it was helpful!
love the music
Hey Samson, grat video! Do you remember the location of flea market in Copenhagen where you bought the mju 1?
I just bought a mju i! Glad to see someone prefer this one over the mju ii. Great video! Thankyou, I'm struggling to figure out the self timer on the mju I tho, I think it might be broken or something .. whoops
button on the top will cycle through the settings !
@@SamsonArnettRoughley aaah thankyou! At first I thought it didn't do anything but apparently you just press the timer button and then (at the same time) the shutter button. I was expection some type of sign in the screen on top. Thankyou for replying. Have a nice day ! 😊
great video, i just picked up the mju i
nice man
i agree that the ergonomic of the MJU I is better than the one of the II but the thing that made it more sought after is mainly the fact that it is used by streetphotographer and the autofocus is far superior on the MJU II.
I have the zoom version of the mju I and mju ii when I got the ii it was from a guy selling tons of cameras for £5 each a few months ago and I didn’t realise just how hard they were to get. I keep looking for the non zoom versions at carboots but never seem to find them. I really like the look of the ii but you have put me off it slightly now 😂
I got the Mju ii maybe 3 years ago for about 80 quid on ebay and I thought I was getting mugged off! Glad I bought one when I did. Defo not worth £200 but still a very good camera
Dope editing.

Nice one bro
Good on you mate!
hello, I hesitate a lot between the two (mju 1 or 2). I would like to take pictures of my friends in the evening, at night or in quite dark places, but also in broad daylight. I have the impression that the mju 1 does not take good photos when there is little light. Which one do you recommend? thank you
5:27
Great vid ! thank you so much
I've had the 2 and the 1 and I honestly thought i was going crazy until you backed up my belief that the 2 constantly shot wide open for as long as possible.
I sold my 2 a while back and am going back to the 1 (also for ergonomics it's just better)
I've had a tonne of cameras from SLRs to premium point and shoots. The Mju seems to trounce them all.
so which one would u recommend to a beginner? thanks.
Great video man! This is the first one I have seen of yours, but Im gonna subscribe and watch more. I bought a MJU ii a week ago and it's coming in the mail and I bought a MJI i today. I"m just gonna try them both out and see how I feel. I have have feeling I will arrive at the same conclusion you did, but I figured I'd better just do my own tests so I can be 100% sure. Did you sell your MJU ii? Funny thing is I also got a Pentax Espio Mini on the way to also test out lol. I better love one of these damn things lol.
Thankyou mate, appreciate it. Still got the MJU II but it gets stuck rewinding the roll and I have to do it in the dark by hand, which gets very boring... Never shot with an Espio mini but they look like a lot of fun !
Thanks Rob
So which camera you decide to keep??
Thank you for pronouncing mju correctly.
very good video thx!
Glad you liked it!
hey man which one did you find focuses better?
thank you!
Nice video bro
sooooo helpful
Glad it helped!
Good vid. Saved me wasting my money
Hi! Could you help me with buying the film camera? I'm torn between MJU I and AF I
Love your accent! hehehe and the video too C:
Cool
Sold my mju ii on eBay after I picked up a Nikon af600 for £3 at a boot sale. I got around £230 despite having a buy it now of £175?! Seriously crazy money for the build quality.
exactly !
Ok first, the sticker is bomb. Secondly, I picked up a MJU I on ebay for $20 and was planning on re-selling to pay for for a MJU ii. I already have an AF-1 Super, how do that and the MJU ii compare in image quality to you?
same lens, just slightly bigger and boxier. Would stick with the mju I if i were you though!
omg u found one for $20 howwww
Hi ! I just bought a mju zoom 105 . And from my lens I can see a small black dot , I don’t know what that is ? Maybe it’s dust ? Will it effect my photos ? My final pictures ? I’m a total beginner and I don’t know how it will develop !
You might get away with it!
You can still get them for a few pounds if you know where to look!🤔😊
I paid less than £10 for an mju II zoom 170 which I prefer having the zoom feature, these were originally far more expensive than the none zoom models.
Review on my channel.
I also have an original mju I bought new in the 1990s.
To be honest they are what they are, a simple, point and shoot camera with minimal controls but produce stunning results with very little user input.
The reason I guess they got so hyped is partly their design, rugged build, pocketability and of course their increasing rarity now.
Plus the whole retro film thing having a mini revival, users don't really want the clunky old SLR type cameras, instead they look for something more subtle, less dated.
The Olympus mju design still looks relevant today, it doesn't look dated at all, in my opinion.
I van remember a time when digital cameras first came out and nobody wanted these point and shoot 35mm film cameras, just wished I'd bought loads......🤔😳😁
Also ha
Haha let us know where you can get them for that price because I’m struggling to find any below £80😅
@@yumna6529 I picked up my mju zoom 105 for £20....😲😁 videos on my channel.
A customer threw two away with us, doesn't know whether she thought it was defective or maybe she didn't feel like it anymore. My colleagues thought they were defective. because they couldn't handle it. I took both with me and both worked perfectly. strange people who just walk away 🤣handy for on the go, but I prefer my Pentax for good pictures
which pentax? thanks!
I got the MJU I at $3.00 was a great offer.
Awesome video! Have any people you know/urself selling the MUJ 1? I am looking to buy!
check out @glasseyecameras ;)
What about the Mju 3? (I have a mju 3 120)
is $170 usd a good price for the mju 1 ? on ebay they’re all $200+ usd 😭170 is the cheapest i could find

cant u config the flash to go off? or it pop up automatically?
on which camera ?
Great Video! Is it hastings at 4:03?
brighton !
How cute u are!!! Was hard to concentrate on the video hahahahaha 😍
Which one do you think is better olympus af 10 super vs Olympus MJU I?
for me , the MJU I. Much smaller and nicer design. Slightly slower lens but will still get some great stuff, the best point and shoot for casual pictures I would say !
wait thats me? this is awesome
You're this weeks winner, Aaaand you've won £20,000 in cash !
@@SamsonArnettRoughley don't want it, appearing in the video was enough
Are you the original or is James the original?
lovely voice you sound like vaatividya
In my country Olympus Mjuu sells for $300 ㅠㅠㅠ
i wish they were still as cheap as they were last year, cheapest i could find a beat up mju II on ebay is 200 USD. Got my mju I 2 years ago for 70 USD
me too pal
Can you share a link of the olympus mju i?
Link of what?
I had the one on top and hated it. I just couldn’t get usable pictures with it.
you should use dx code labels and change the ISO for more light. shoot 400 at 200
real protogs take their hats off to shoot their shot.
only because it covers the metering system hahaha
Right, these cameras follow along in the tradition of their manual predecessor, the XA, which is also hyped beyond all reason. In fairness to Olympus, all of these cameras were originally designed as very small, light, and convenient snapshot cameras. The intent was to produce a roll of 3x5" prints, not significant enlargements. The lenses are compromised to operate at a very shallow backfocus distance, making the cameras very compact. The tradeoff is lots of vignetting and low resolution. Fine for a low resolution scan to post on social media, but Ansel Adams isn't looking over his shoulder to see if you are overtaking him. At least with the XA, the cultish followers haven't gotten that message. I assume for all the praise, they have never really tried to do more than post to Instagram.
Think you're right. Ansel used an N8000 right? Don't think he would be worried.
@@SamsonArnettRoughley Maybe the shade of Ansel Adams could use an N8000 (which I presume is a late '80s or 90's autofocus NIkon?). When Adams got too old to haul around a large format camera, is tool of choice was the Hasselblad 500C. He died around 1983. The only 35mm camera I think he ever admitted using was a Contax II he briefly borrowed from Georgia O'Keeffe around 1938
Came her wondering whether to grt the mju 1 or 2, gonna get the af1
Lmao same
what about nikon l35af?
