- The new Onkyo TX-RZ50 is the first AV receiver we've tested that could do 4K 120Hz HDR VRR with the Xbox Series X, the Sony PS5 & NVidia's RTX 30 Series graphics cards without needing a separate convertor box, a hardware board change or a later firmware update. thanks to the latest bug-free HDMI 2.1 Panasonic chipset from Nuvoton Technology.
We used a 65-inch LG C1 (OLED65C1) to capture the HDMI signal information.
The Onkyo TX-RZ50 features three HDMI 2.1 inputs with 40Gbps bandwidth, three HDMI inputs with 24Gbps bandwidth, as well as two HDMI 2.1 outputs with 40Gbps bandwidth.
The Onkyo RZ50 is distributed in the USA by 11 Trading Company who also sells Pioneer Elite & Integra receivers with the same updated chipset.
Here's 11 Trading Company's statement in response to our question re shipping dates:
"Factory shipment for US is scheduled for July, with an August arrival/ release date. Factory shipment for Europe is scheduled for August with a target launch date of September. To be clear, these are estimated target dates for the RZ50, but the other models should be similar. Of course, there are many variables, so these dates are estimated."

Great news! Thanks for explaining that when it's 4:2:2, the device CANNOT TELL whether the bit-depth is 8, 10 or 12 due to the way HDMI signalling works. More people need to realise this!
This confused the hell out of me on the FreeSync info screen when I first connected my PS5 to my CX through a 4K/60/HDMI 2.0 limited receiver. I actually dropped it down to 4:2:0 to boost the bit depth, but if that was just due to a misreading, maybe I'll boost it back up.
This is wonderful! I’ve been keeping up with these AVR and am stoked to see a live demo. Thanks for doing this!
Czekamy , czekamy :) Nie śpiesz się ONKYO. Tak długo czekałem na Wasz nowy ampli, że wytrzymam jeszcze te parę miesięcy. Powodzenia!!!
Thank you for this test. It pays to wait many months and this video helps you wait for the TX-RZ50. greetings
Thank you Vincent for your always-awesome content (I know this comment is months later). This video at the 1:00 mark helped me realize there was a setting I needed to change on the TX-NR6100 to get the VRR, etc. working with the Series X. Other information I'd found strongly gave the impression the receiver should work with it, but it wasn't initially. Then I found this video and that setting allows the Series X to work well so far with full capability with my LG CX. I was about to return it before I found this, so Thank You.
Great news that you were able to get a pre production model to test!
I’ve got my sights on the Denon/Marantz receivers they also recently announced will be released later this year, supporting all the 2.1 features.
Thanks for the great news! I may finally have found an AVR to replace my NR1007 with - 3 working 40Gbps inputs, Dirac Live calibration. Looks like a winner to me.
Great news! Also this is the first video I’ve watched on your channel in HDR, looks sweet on my new iPad! 👍🏼
Good man Vincent. Always staying on top of things 😎👍
Thanks so much for this video! If you have many sources then controlling them via AV receiver is a must and up to now I wondered where the solution for HDMI 2.1 is. It seemed like 2.1 is only for people without AV receivers. So these new Onkyo receivers might finally be the solution and it is great that you are on top of things reporting this inportant news!
Glad to see Onkyo is still making AVR's. Love there sound quality.
Could you test input lag
Xbox -> onkyo -> lgC1
Vs
Xbox -> lgC1
Second this!
Yes this. Also, if whether audio codec settings affect this number on XB or the AVR.
This!
This please.
This comment needs to be pinned.
Great news 😀, always an informative product review and demonstration.
Vincent delivering the good news!
Seems like I'm finally replacing the relic that is my 90s Sony AVR.
Hopefully eARC + PS5 also works perfectly on the Onkyo.
@Jimmy Oltral All Denon 2.1 avrs are currently fine?
Japanese receivers have come a long way in SQ from then.
@@sachiel123 Denon/Marantz - 1-in-2-out 40 Gbps ports. The rest are 18GB.
Please do audio lag AND input lag tests between the console being connected to the AV receiver vs the console being connected to the TV while the audio is being passed through eARC to the AV receiver.
Thank you in advance.
This is my problem. Avm70 and q90t: game mode doesnt work with avr video passthru, and audio is compressed with tv audio passthru.
Atmos earc works, but it lags :(
Do you have any means of measuring whether there is an appreciable gain in latency?
I got the little box that fixes the 4K 120hz issue on my AVR2700H. I didn’t notice any issue before, but I got the box for free just in case there ends up being an issue. So far so good! 4K 120hz at 10-bit color shines nice through my LG CX
Been waiting for 3 months for my box from Marantz.
Like the other posters suggested, can you do a lag test with and without it? Does it have a working volume overlay in vrr mode?
Yamaha is claiming full support on it's yet to be released AVR's but after a firmware update with no release window so what Onkyo and likely Pioneer has done is fantastic.
Last month Yamaha announces hardware replacement program for HDMI 2.1 receivers
About time! I hope these are available soon. How do you call up that status display on the C1? I haven't seen it on mine.
LOL, huge fan Joe! Funny, but not surprising to see you here. Cannot help with your question.
Mash the green button on the remote a few times.
If you're asking about freesync info you have to press green button several times and it will appear
Spam the green button until it pops up 👍🏼
Thanks for the replies, I was going to ask the same thing.
Kinda annoying how (imo) cryptic it is, who's ever going to stumble across that. Dunno about the rest of you but I don't have a habit of spamming buttons to see what happens, same as the other little menu accessible buy spamming the mute button - wtf right...
I’m more amazed at how those colors look on that tv screen!!!
Hi Vincent, love your channel. I was wondered, since you interviewed the Samsung rep about the Q90R, which I have the 82"version, and you asked about the eARC update that the 2019 models were supposed to get, have you ever followed up on that promise? Because I have both next gen systems and I've been anxiously awaiting the update as well along with the HDMI adapter for my Denon x4700H
I bought the Marantz SR8015 recently. The 120 is working now. They had an update. Before they were sending customers a little box to solve the issue but now the new ones come fixed. This Onkyo is a cool unit.
Thanks for the info. How many HDMI 2.1 inputs are there on the Marantz?
My Onkyo Rz820 is still kicking out great Dolby Atmos and DTSx 🤘.
Not to mention massive size and clean looks with all metal construction! Has great customization of speaker placement and individual speaker control!
Hi Vincent, thanks for another fantastic review.
Nice content, very informative!
Great to hear an AV receiver can do that! But have to say its a bit of a beast in size.
@Aquatic Ape 🤣😂💯
literally thought it was a microwave in the thumbnail
Looks like a typical high-quality receiver to me. Just under 8" isn't that huge.
@Aquatic Ape The new tiny home trend 😄
I honestly never understood the “its too big” critique for audiophiles.
Like seriously, if you care enough about a high end audio system then you should know enough to be able to organize your space efficiently or just full on hide the receiver.
If it is a certain size it is because that is what is REQUIRED to do what you are paying for it to do in the first place.
Another great video! Will you be testing out the Denon 8k adapter they sent out to fix the HDMI 2.1 issue with the Series X?
Thanks for uploading in HDR
I just got my INTEGRA DRX 2.4 2021 With HDMI 2.1 ports! I’m so excited!
Onkyo is back !!!!!!
Yesterday I got the Denon SPK618 adapter box which does appear to fix the problem with the chipset in the 2020 receivers. I would love to know exactly how they are doing it, but I can now get full RGB 10b 4L10 from my RTX 30 series as well as Series X. It's a stupidly huge box but at least it's powered by 5V micro USB and not another wall wart. Such an expensive bug! Looking forward to upgrading to a 2nd gen receiver with multiple 2.1 inputs for sure.
9:45 this definitely makes shopping for a receiver much easier, thank you I like you for really simplifying this whole process /sarcasm. Without your chart I'm not going to be able to know what these things support so now I actually have to refer back to this specific timestamp
From 8 minute onward, you showed a window desktop screen running at 4k 120hz vrr hdr to demonstrate the rtx gpu ran without issues with the onkyo. However, at around 8:34, the screen suddenly flashed and if you look at the top right corner, the hz number started changing (it was at a constant 120hz before the flash). What was going on there? Is this sth to be worried about?
That's what VRR is
9:54 - is there any important, worth to pay difference between Integra DRX-5.4 and RZ50? I'm still using an old Integra 989v2 AVR but looking for another new flagship to replace it (with all possible new features, helping me to again not think about new AVR for few years...) Thanks for this great review and help in my concerns.
Would love to see a review of the Pioneer Elite VSX-LX505. Been waiting on HDM2.1 to get sorted out but would really like to know about input lag (if I connect a SX to the receiver, then the receiver to the TV).
Hey Vincent, can you make a video about the new firmware update for LG CX?
I see we still got the same onkyo UI in the menus. Im dying for onkyo to do a modern refresh
Well, let's be honest: it's the least used feature. Most people only use a it a handful of times, so why spend time and resources giving it a makeover?
@@MrSatyre1 I use my menus all the time but then again I’m always tweaking and adjusting stuff. It’s sorta my kryptonite. But I’m also a proponent of learning my equipment 100% inside and out.
I'm still waiting for your test/review on the new Samsung ust projector.
Possibly with that new onkyo receiver
Can you do a video with the new Yamaha, they do have 2.1 including Auro3d
Great video.
HDTVTest is there any advantage to plugging devices directly into your receiver then connecting your receiver to your TV compared to plugging all devices to your TV then connecting your TV to your receiver?
Would be nice if you can test the input lag as well. See if the receiver having any effect on that, if it adds milliseconds to it. Cause if it's a few ms, no issue, but if it's a lot it's not sadly a solution yet.
That's very interesting, but what about input lag?
Does using this receiver eliminate your ability to put the C1 or CX into PC mode? How do you manage all the the different optimizations for each device?
Jesus onkyo back! can’t wait for their nr series hdmi 2.1 amps.
I just read in Stereophile yesterday Onkyo is no more.... This is odd.
@@thegrimyeaper Voxx /Sharp came in to buy/save Onkyo. It's being finalized at the end of this month. once that is completed, you should see these new models on their website.
@@neogeo6464 Nice.
Could you test if ‘zone 2’ works with 18+Gbps as well?
Got an RZ840 at the moment, which has a zone 2 that doesn’t support the full 2.0 bandwith it seems, just found that out a few weeks ago.
Onkyo is back! Love to see it
Off topic but maybe some of you will know: Been doing some testing and when I launch a game the LG C1 prompt the Dolby Vision Atmos logo... and picture mode swtich to cinema home, then I have to switch back to game mode, When I go to the Xbox Home and back to the game the tv switch back to cinema home.... anyone having this problem too? all games are doing the same... does not look bad just a bit warmer, but for games i want to stay in game mode. Any ideas ?
He's done a video discussion this so your not the only one
Really surprised it wasn’t a Denon AVR. Hoping they launch new ones soon so I can get it for the 7.2.4 I am trying.
Hi Vincent, do you think they'll update the PS5 to 40gb hdmi via a future update or if it'll stay forever capped at 30gbps
Is it better to plug everything directly to the receiver or simply to the TV like an Lg G1 . So that no need to worry about AV compatibility. Then just use if for sound by using eArc to the tv ?
What would be the maximum HDMI cable length you could have and still have these features working properly?
It would be interesting to know what the best way to connect is with regards to picture/sound quality and lag. For example if I connect everything to the TV and use ARC will I get any sound lag, and if I connect my source to the receiver will I get picture lag or worse PQ?
I plan on using earc bc I don't like the idea of running video thru the receiver first.
Just got an AV receiver and have the PS5 direct to the TV and earc back to the AV using pass through on the TV. Seems to work perfectly and I've certainly not noticed any audio lag.
@@BobtheWidget123456 you could even cut doen on the cords by using an optical cable .
I would love to see input lag through these. Ill be waiting for a Yamaha personally but Im not looking to replace my rxa780 just yet, still too new.
I think Yamaha is promising some firmware update.
I wouldn't buy anything yet until the update actually arrives and works.
Any update on the release dates for the US? Last I heard both Pioneer and Onkyo were supposed to be out this month for their first models but none of the stores I've talked to have any idea... I really want the Pioneer model set up before I upgrade my tv :(
Does 4K/120 Dolby vision gaming work with this receiver Vincent? As per your latest video.
Can you review the equivalent Denon product (assuming there is one with the same capabilities.)
i own the LG CX and used the green button trick to bring up the FreSync information of resolution and Hz. But mine reads 5.5Hz refresh rate even though i know i'm getting more. is there a way i can fix that. it seems i'm running the latest firmware upgrade. thank you sir, i appreciate your videos as they are very informative.
sound great !
Vincent is the C825 review coming this week? I urgently need to settle on a TV, the C825 is one of my options but as there still is no in depth review on this TV I might just give it a pass for the LG C1. Hope we can get a response from you.
still looking for a proper hdmi splitter of audio extractor that give a full 2nd hdmi for the audio from the xbox , because my Yamaha does not supports 4k@60 only 24. but the xbox just sees the tv and forces the audio out to AC3 instead of the 7.1uncompressed option.
C'mon Vincent, need that QN95A review 😆
Deffo 👍
Hi Vincent, could you test the latest firmware (03.23.06) for the LG CX? You can read very negative things ...
Does this setup support Dolby/Dolby Atmos without sound delay issues? My current Denon receiver has very obvious sound delay if I set the xbox sound output to "Dolby" rather than 5.1 uncompressed. Feels like maybe 100-200ms delay.
Finally gooes freesync information on LG CX. How did you get that. My tv always shows 5,5 hz.
How much input lag does the receiver add?
how does this compare to the RX-A8A? I need a 7.1.4 receiver and the TX-RZ50 can't do it
I’ve been waiting for a new receiver that can handle the new systems and TVs
hopefully saving up a lot while waiting.
@@krectus I know right lol 😂
I have been waiting to update my 12 yo Integra prepro.
Built like a tank and still working perfectly.
That’s what Onkyo/Integra are known for but getting falling behind as the center in the age of 11.2.2, 4k and eARC. It’s the weakest link now by far, but every decent prepro starts around 4k with way too much customization required.
Maybe this will serve as the brain of the system because I think the age of reasonable prepro has ended.
And I can use the Integra for listening and analog.
Advices?
Did u try to use Av to other tv like sony? Cause i've face issue like downmix to PCM...meaning the sound quality not that great
Are there any updates on the availability of this receiver in the UK? I’ve been following it for nearly a year and can find it listed for sale anywhere yet.
If you are going xbox seriex x 120mhz to tv then arc to a reciever does hdmi 2.1 matter or hdmi 2 standard is fine because it is not even utilized with hdmi sound processing? I am researching if its necessary for me to upgrade my denon reciever or not considering i have lowest lag hdmi xbox x to tv then hdmi out arc to reciever. my denon is arc and not earc. Thanks!
What if we connect gaming PC or Ps5 directly to TV and just use optical cable for surround sound ? Why do we have to connect PC to receiver?
Can u do this same test with a 2020 demon receiver using the break-out box? I hear mixed results on whether it fully fixes the problem with Xbox and nvidia gpu (vrr, audio, etc)
Please this
Does it have sufficient amps to support 7.2.4 atmos? Or am I going to have to stick with my txnr3030 and continue to split out the audio from the hdmi like I have been doing!
Is there a current Surround Sound processor/Preamp that can do what this onkyo is doing ?
Do we think that Panasonic will use the same chipset in their TVs this year (appreciate Nuvoton Technology bought their chip business - but lets hope so)
I hope so as I will be buying one next month. 🤞🏾
Boom 🤪👍😎
How is the audio lag?
I love rhythm games, and some get unplayable on most AV receivers
Usually the tvs fault it's proccessing the image and sound diffrently and it ends up like that
@Tech & Gaming TV uses time to process the image
Yep, the best determination of lag for me is Rock Band. My current Onkyo, HDMI to HDMI does fine.
@Tech & Gaming Input lag and response time are different things. Input lag is how long it takes between the signal being sent to the TV and the TV displaying the signal (a button being pressed on the controller and the character reacting on screen).
Response time is how long it takes for the pixels to refresh each frame, which results in better motion clarity and less blur.
Modern OLEDs are generally great in both regards, though.
@Tech & Gaming Input lag and response time are two completely different things.
can you talk about the thing that ps4pro (maybeps5 too) switches from rgb to yuv422. there is no option for yuv422 just 420. and is 420 8bit and 422 10bit or what? i don't know why its switching if i set it to rgb. i play on E9
I recently returned the TX-RZ840 due to performance issues. Hopefully, this new receiver will restore my confidence in Onkyo AV receivers.
Yamaha's brand new monster flagship receiver RX-A8 does it as well. And also do their next 2 models following the later (RX-A6, RX-A4).
But does the Yamaha it do it on three inputs? So far all the AV receivers that did HDMI 2.1 only did it on one input, which is almost pointless.
@@el_p1nko The new Aventage AVRs RX-A4A / A6A & A8A will support bug-free HDMI 2.1 on all 7 input ports.
Plus they will be released earlier ... in July
Yamaha - Yes !!
@@el_p1nko 3 of the inputs and 1 output will support 4k/120 and 8k/60
When are these coming out, I've been waiting for 2 months for denon to send me a x4700h, I might just switch to one of these
They have played the waiting game, but now they will offer receivers with HDMI2.1, but also Dirac Live, which is also a game changer. I have already saved up for one ;)
Excellent. Now if only we could get A/V preamp/processors with working HDMI 2.1 rolled out, for those of us who use separates.
What speakers did you use to connect to the onkyo av receiver?
Hallelujah indeed! Been using my CX for a month now with only 2 channel audio since my elderly Pioneer receiver (10 years and going strong) definitely can't pass through Gsync/VRR from my PC. Looking forward to hearing more about the Pioneer Elite, because after having zero problems with Pioneer with a decade, I definitely feel some brand loyalty to them (although with the mergers and whatnot, perhaps I shouldn't get my hopes up that new Pioneer AVRs are going to be as good...sigh).
Question - are you able to rename all those inputs to whatever you want on Onkyo? So instead of showing BD/DVD on both the AVR screen, and on the TV screen when you switch inputs, it can show say, PCNAME instead? I figure that's probably the case but it's the little things!
Waiting with baited breath until August...!
While I can't answer your question, I do agree with you, as I've got a 10 year old Pioneer that's still going strong as well, and hope that these new models are as reliable. Too bad that my old one doesn't support eARC, or I'd have no reason to upgrade.
Thanks Vincent. This is great news for xbox gamers.
Hey Vincent, great video! Just one thing... with the Nvidia Pendulum demo, for some reason the FPS starts high and then pulls right down. In the bottom left corner you can pull up two FPS sliders (min and max). Drag them both up to the max screen framerate to make it super extra buttery smooth 👌
Do you have to run the video through the receiver to take advantage of the 2.1? Atm i have my ps4 straight to my tv via hdmi then from my tv to my receiver via hdmi what am I missing or losing
PS4 doesn’t take advantage on hdmi 2.1. HDMI 2.1 is mainly useful when the source you’re using is capable to run games at 4K 120 fps. I think ps4 can run 4K at 30fps or 1080p at 60 fps ( not sure at all).
So yor’re not really losing anything as your current source (ps4) cannot take advantage on hdmi 2.1
Isn't it crazy we can't use that lg remote cursor to control the mouse in Windows? We can do it with Samsung phones, I wonder what's missing on the pc side. HDMI limitations?
As I know its GPUs vendors limitations, no one of this m@therfakers wanna implement eArc. Since 2017 as I searched, after getting B6 tv.
How is the latency with a Xbox or PS5 attached? I’ve read that VRR is a bit buggy still
Thanks Onkyo
Isit compatible with the 4k TV with only hdmi 2.0 ports? Will you still get 4k@120hz?
Thanks for the video, I enjoy watching your channel.
Some audio / HT sites have speculated that Onkyo might be dead so I am pleased to see the brand show up at the party with the HDMI working correctly on this AVR.
It is also impressive that the TV seamlessly switches between the modes without any hiccups.
If you know, does the TV also automatically switch into the other modes to automatically support various devices like a ROKU, 4k Blu-Ray, or a cable/satellite box ?
I really appreciate your work and presentation.
Have you tested with 4k120hz Dolby Vision ? Does ticked in Xbox setting ?
When is release date for this reciver thanks
Can you not rename the inputs? In 2021, it’s stupid for them to manually assign names to each HDMI input.
of course you can rename them
Any audio delay using DTS/Atmos on XSX or PS5?
Can you do a review? For this av receiver?
I hope this product actually comes to market for the masses. With VOXX signing an APA for Onkyo Home Entertainment Corporation, hopefully, this will breathe new life into the Onkyo line of receivers.
