- Jan-Ove Waldner wins the 1996 European Singles Table Tennis Championships. He beat Persson in the final. It was the only European singles title Waldner ever won.
[Sorry for the quality - this footagage was very difficult to find!] - Sport
The ball control and precision shown by Waldner is what makes him so great. Hardly ever do you see players today hit shots that precise and unpredictable. Persson hustled and deserves credit for staying the game, but it seemed like he just wasn't aggressive enough.
These guys are so courteous and humble on the table... even after being so competitive... Awesome... classic... thanks for sharing...
21 allowed the best player to recover more often than with the new format of 11
great match between two great legends.....i love waldner and persson.....
Thanks! Great match. A piece of art by Waldner. Persson played very well too.
With this title he took an European grand slam. World cup, worldchamp, olympic and european single champion.
The best Table Tennis Players that Sweden Produced - Jan Ove Waldner, Jorg Pearson, Mikael Applegreen. Waldner is truely a Table Tennis Legend!
Peter karlsson
Waldner the art of table tennis, Jörgen Persson the fighter.
you are they have different styles but they are best player
No mercy! Eventually he won even the European champs, but it took another 14 years after his first close attempt in 1982. 1996 was a strong year in general for Waldner. He won the national champs and Top 12 as well. Lost to Jörgen in the SF in SOC.
Yes this euro final was more important for waldner than worls final of 91
I like the swedish sportsmanship look on the Chinses.
The only thing that calls my attention is the possibility of the ball touching Waldners t-shirt under his left arm when he served but you can not see it clearly in the video. Anyway I think that Persson's complaint came too late, he lost the point and then he lodged a complaint for Waldner´s service, what would happened if he had won the point; would he had done it? Waldner's next service on purpose to give Persson the point he claims for to finish their discussion is rather fair play to me.
These guys are like the closest of brothers to each other.
Thx for upload.Two legends of table tenis.
Waldner in bestform fast eine Wiederholung von 89
Persson has a slight lifetime edge over Waldner - they played so many games against each other are so familiar with each other and the one in form on the day tends to win
Понравился 741-й номер Вальднера

thanks for this video :)
@lilmoesk899 Compared to the other great Swedes Waldner was the attacker, Persson the solid offensive player and Applegreen the allarounder.
GOAT
@fullfunk truer words never spoken!
My favourite Waldner's block ever ;DXDDD 3:58
Could anyone tell me what the problem was at 1:09 through 2:08?
Waldner, Wang Liqin and Kong Linghui. These guys all had the best shakehand style of play.
Wang Liqin’s forehand flick is flawless.
can anyone tell me what were they discussing at around 1:10?
My pleasure, mrfreerunner1000.
@PrinceArt77 depronto fue que a waldner la bola se le corrio a la hora de hacer el servicio creo yo... o si no..depronto habia sido ned
Waldner typically plays more in the team competition which favors his team mates (3-0 Person 1991 Worlds?) when they play him in singles but in this tournament I think, singles and Teams were seperate.
No there was not separate tournament...
I was there, in Bratislava and i witnessed it all...
Sweden won team, double ( waldi and Jorgen) and single competition of course.
Clean sweap as u call it
Unbelievable memories and experience to see those players.
Dicon creates success.
3:16 is unbelievable:-)
@Andreas1986xyz In Scandinavia and Turkey it didnt change name before 2000.
@olaniyi570 He got finger injury before the olympics
@fullfunk Was that a good thing, in fact?

Waldi was World and Olympic Champignon, but no European Champignon til 1996.
Ooh, almost forgot that Walnder lost pretty badly to Johnny Huang in the Olympics that year:-( Also it took Waldner for ever to win this title. But better late than never.
Why are u digging on Waldner? Have u won anything in your life mate?
Also, he lost to huang in 96 olimpics, but name me the player who has not lost a match in its lifetime?
Just to remind you, Jan Ove was in the final of ECH 1982 against Appelgren at the age of 16...and then he was there in the final again in 1994, before he won in 1996.
But, u are probably one of those who try to find weaknesses of Waldis carrier...
It will not change one thing, he is regarded as The Greatest of table tennis...
The Mozart of Table Tennis
And u cant take anything of his achivements regardless of what u say.
@PrinceArt77 ¿?..no entiendo que ¿?..
Yup.
@sak0815
i think in 96 raider was already renamed into "Twix". That renaming was in the early 90s..Nevertheless 96 counts as good old times were i was really young.
@lutove94 me amido....si.. no entiendo aque......ana maa fahemt inta kalam hena..sho hada....ana maafi latino....inta mojnon sah.....yalah..kalewale...maasalaema sadik
@lutove94 por pavor mi amigo....no intiendez lenguahe
if i was playing in those i would be the champ. XD
Im assuming u are joking?
should be 13
Here is my conspiracy theory:
1- Waldner and Persson are friends and teammates.
2- Waldner won the 1989 World Championship so in the next Championship in 1991 when he was in the final against Persson, then he let Persson win so both could have the experience of being world champions.
3- Persson having won the European Championship in 1986 and Waldner having not won it yet, then in the 1996 final Persson returned the favor by letting Waldner win the European Championship.
4- Now Waldner and Persson are Champions of both big tournaments.
5- These two people are generous and fair.
It could have happened but im doubtful...
When u see the 91's final, u would realize that waldi wasnt at his best and Jorgen was on the top of Waldi all the time, was more aggresive, and jan made fare too many mistakes
In Bratislava, when i wittness the final on my own, Waldi was more aggresive and smarter, more precise , thats why he won.
And, of course,one cant dissmiss your theory , i find it highly unlikely to be the case.
And lastly, both players have spoken about 89, and 91 champs and looks like there was real rivalry between them two all the time
Thats only my opinion
Stay safe my friend
@@krzysztoflaskowski6110 Thanks for sharing your experience. Your comments are valid, but remember it's just my personal benign conspiracy theory that I shared just for fun, there are a lot of chances that it's not true.
@@janovewaldner1 Persson wasn't really dominant in the mid 90's and Waldner had a good record against him even before his accident.He was 5-0 against at the Europe top12 and 4-2 at the Swedish Championship.Persson's peak was 1989-1991 and his prime 1987-1993.He got married in 1992,had a serious car accident in early 1994 and his career took a huge slump.
@@dickn.ormous1064 Accident? tell me about that please.
IMO not giving your very best in such a final would be disrespectful towards the opponent and the crowd and I don't want to think that Waldner and Persson were capable of such fraud.
Persson cant play dominant.
