The robes were actually inspired by the "traje", the official uniform of Portuguese university students. The "traje" is black and consists of a coat, waistcoat and trousers, roughly the same for boys and girls. The famous "capa" - a long, black cloak - finishes off the uniform strikingly. The cloak can be worn in different ways, depending on whether the student is in class, at mass, at an academic event, the Serenata or even in mourning. In the 1990s Rowling moved to Porto to teach English.
One thing about them looking 'normal' and in their everyday clothing would be that Harry would have been having baggy oversized worn out clothes. We only ever saw that in the first film then it completely disappeared. All of us fans would have thought Harry would have been smart enough to spend his money on new clothes for at least Hogwarts but we learn he doesn't do that either when he gets humiliated. I did love the quidditch gear though and the linings on the robes. Loved the lion hat. I had no idea that Luna's actress wrote fanfiction before being cast. That was awesome.
I always forget that there's actually a costume team on movies and what their job is, but when she mentioned the Yule Ball, I can only imagine the chaos on set when so many extra costumes had to be made for those wide shots.
I actually saw that in the forth book of Harry Potter when Harry is passes trough a bunch of people he passes Goyle who hair is all neat and tidy and is wearing completely black robes he doesn’t look that happy and looks like he’s thinking of a thought
Fun fact when Luscious smacked his snake cane down on Malfoys shoulder, the teeth actually dug into his skin and made him tear up. Tom Felton talked about it at a panel a few years ago at the Calgary Comic Con expo

I can't be the only person that thinks Harry and Luna should have been a couple. They compliment each other so well and almost read the others mind.
Me too they both have experienced death of their loved ones so I think they understand each other more than anyone else
