Yeah that's a weird thing about it, literally every single pure blood at the very least would be descended from him including Harry Potter but why does only one family, the Gaunts, seem to have inherited his magical abilities and artefacts? After 1000 years the Gaunts would have literally millions of direct ancestors, Slytherin is just ONE! I know there is a lot of inbreeding in their history but not enough for an ancestor form 1000 years ago to still be at the forefront of their DNA it's just weird.

@@OpinionatedChicken59 My theory is that the Gaunt line were just especially obsessed with making sure that their line were Parselmouths, because it was definitive proof (even more than the Slytherin heirlooms) that they were Slytherin's heirs. They possibly disowned or maybe even killed any children who didn't inherit the ability and we know they weren't shy of engaging in incest.

It's surprising to see how Slytherin is the only one (that we know of) connected to the newer generations, and not any of the other 3 founders. You'd imagine at least Gryffindor to have some distant relation to the Potter or Weasly family or something. I suppose maybe he has and we just don't know (yet). But still, it would be dope to see how the other three connect to the newer generations.

It kind of makes sense since they're the ones that care about bloodlines the most. Maybe JK Rowling knew (either consciously or subconsciously) that they would be the ones that would keep track (kind of how many rich/well-connected people IRL would be more likely to know who their ancestors were) and so represented those bloodline connections more. Or maybe it's just a coincidence.

The Slytherin was passed down to the Gaunts (They're more well known to have it) but that doesn't mean that the potters can't have the Title for slytherin. If Voldemort had already claimed the title of Lord Slytherin and was defeated by Harry when he was a baby, it technically was an informal duel and Voldemort lost then that means the title of Slytherin was passed down to Harry as well as the Potters

According to the Internet, Alice Longbottom's maiden name was Prewett but she wasn't Molly's sister. Harry's grandmother Euphemia's maiden name was Braithewaite, also connecting another family in the process. There was also a few Potters between Hardwin and Henry: Ralston (17th century) and Abraham. Astoria Greengrass had a sister named Daphne.
Edit: I should also note that there's a Ravenclaw from Harry's time named Anthony Goldstein in school but that's probably from another line of the Goldstein family.

Yeah Malfoy and Ron are distant relatives (Ron’s dad’s mom was a Black as is his mom, the former was disinherited for marrying a muggle-loving Weasley), Harry and Voldemort are distantly related through the Three Brothers’ father (but given that the Gaunts were far too bigoted for the pro-muggle Potters and don’t seem to have married a non-relative in a while that’s probably the only way they were related). And apparently Harry had a great great aunt-by-marriage or something who was a Black (but she, her husband and their newborn son were all killed in a Grindelwald terrorist attack and she was probably disowned for what she married into)

Quiet a few pure-blood familys, like the Blacks and the Lestrange, tried everything to make sure that they don't get any muggle/halfblood in their bloodline. Also it was more likely to stay in an area: in this example Britain (even the Lestrange came from france if i remember right). Everyone in those familys who wanted to keep the name would not dare to marry somone they weren't sure had no muggle ancestors (as far as they could follow up the family trees). Better marry the cousin that getting potention muggle blood into the family.
similar to our royal familys in old times wich prefered to only marry other royals, but in lack of enough royal familys they could chose from (and yes politics but even without that there would not be much variety) they prefered to marry their relatives than any non royal person.

I think there’s more connections than everyone knows. It’s said that the muggle-born are not completely muggle, because they’ve ancestors who were wizards, just somewhere in the line there was probably a squib who left the wizarding world and they married someone who isn’t a wizard, and after some generations they forget

This is one reason why I've always loved the wizarding world because it reminds me so much of my mum's family.
Everyone from her village is related one way or another. And to make things more complicated, you have 2nd and 3rd marriages and even illegitimate children added to the mix.
What makes my mum's family tree even more difficult is that we follow a patronymic naming system. So your surname is your father's first name.
Being such a remote village and country means the culture is still quite strong with hardly any outside influence just like the wizarding world.
Love this video, keep up the good work.

That's a fantastic family tree! Well done for making it, it must have taken a lot on your part!
I have to say though, something I would have loved to be canon in the series would be the revelation that Harry Potter was actually the Heir of Slytherin all along, and Voldemort was really the Heir of Gryffindor all along (and thanks to his Muggle parentage no less, maybe a product of a scandalous marriage between Gryffindor's son named "Harold Godricson" and Slytherin's disowned squib daughter). That would have been a shocking twist and also prove Dumbledore's statement of "it's our choices rather than what we are that defines us" in Chamber of Secrets more valid.

Arthur Weasley was his cousin and Molly was his sister by law (that's his statement in book). Also his sisters all married into different family, 2 of which were pureblood and one muggle and 2 of them had kids thus the line continues.

the Dumbledore family I believe you could add in to this. My theory is that Dumbledore is a descendant of Antioch Peverall, I think it just makes so much sense for his character, rhymes with him possessing the Elder Wand throughout most of the story up until his death and ties into the side of him that lusts for power that he supresses because it scares him, whereas Antioch was killed because he lacked that self control. This leaves the 5 heads of house in the series, Snape, McGonnagal, Sprout, Flitwick and Slughorn not connected to the tree which I think is quite neat
