Kind of interesting to see the shale boom in 2008 and the decline in traditional exploration during the 90's and 00's. Also, I found it surprising that the US was the largest producer of oil all the way through the 70's given the shortages. I guess we used more than we produced, huh.
The shortages were just a result of gasoline price controls from Nixon. He detached the dollar from gold in 1971 (basically like the US declaring bankruptcy) and the world rapidly got rid of their dollars. Prices starting shooting up, so Nixon put in price controls (to try and keep the price low). As no one was making any money on supplying gasoline (they couldn't sell it for what it was actually worth), the supply appeared to be low.
