    The situation at 05:35 was even worse. Following the German invasion of The Netherlands and Belgium, the Allied forces moved north, into both attacked countries, which was just what the Germans were hoping for.
    With most of their forces north of the French border, following the German breakthrough (or better 'sail through' because there were almost no forces stationed in the Ardennes Region) most of the Allied forces' supply lines were cut off and they were being surrounded from the north and south.
    Therefore the only direction they could fall back to, was the Belgian coast, ending up in Dunkirk.

    I always thought the US was extremely well-placed. Possibly the most strategically placed country on Earth. The US doesn't share borders with neighboring threats (Canada hardly invests in its military because the US is so powerful, and Mexico, no offense, is too poor to be powerful). With those 2 countries not being threats, and more so allies, it takes the crossing of the entire Pacific or Atlantic oceans to get to the US. This puts most militaries at a distinct disadvantage, if they ever wanted to go on the offensive. The US also has the most powerful Navy in the whole world, and can defend its coasts very easily.

      @@MerkhVision That area is the beginning of the most densely populated area of Europe, and consequently one its most productive and powerful. No chance the people of that area would let such military presence continue, just look at Okinawa today. Compared to the Great Wall of China, which was built north of Beijing, itself around surrounded by useless unproductive mountains on the west, north and east, and extending the wall further west towards the steppes where only the tiny number of horse nomads go.
      Belgium was additionally supposed to let the Maginot expand into their border with Germany, not along their border with France. They chose to be like the Dutch who in WWI remained neutral. Thinking that Germany would similarly respect that sort of neutrality again, and also choosing the UK as their preferred ally over France, they felt protected enough. Unfortunately, the British lacked army, and despite the splendid navy and air force, they couldn't even begin retaking continental Europe until the Americans arrived.

    About the ww2 references: France's geography is ALMOST perfect (hi, Germany). Now let's talk about demography.
    1914 : France: 41,630,000 , Germany: 65,860,000
    1940 : France: 40,690,000 , Germany: 69,838,000
    France used to be *by far* the most populated country of Europe, and that's one of the reasons why France could resist (and invade) most of Europe during the French revolution wars and the Napoleonic wars. But this situation ended ~after the Napoleonic era and France underwent a lasting demographic winter, while other European countries' population increased a lot. Despite massive immigration starting in the 1870s, it didn't change much (there were even years at the end of 19th c. when France actually lost population (more deaths than births) IIRC).

    Just to make this clear: France did not think Germany unable to pass through the Ardenne, they thought German Motorized and Panzers were unable to pass through the Ardennes, and they were right. What they were wrong was to assume that this would be enough deterrence a against full scale German thrust.
    The Panzers stuck close to the Ardenne while German infantry did indeed go through the Ardennes. Might be nitpicking but it's always good to know.

    One correction. Prussia and her allies didn't invade France through Belgium in the Franco-Prussian War. They went through the Saarland and into Lorraine. This territory isn't flat at all.
    Also (more for the commenters), for much of modern history, France was much more of a military threat to the disunited German lands than vice-versa. Even though there were few desisive wars, France had far more ability to project her power into the German states than the other way around. Hence, the reason the Franco-Prussian war was such a shocking reversal.

    • @gardener68
      @gardener68 Před 4 lety +110

      There were a lot of reasons why France had such rotten luck between 1850 and 1950. The French have actually won most of their wars previously, but the changing geopolitical landscape after the 1848 revolutions put the French on the back foot on the continent. First, they were mostly concerned with their overseas Empire, which naturally made them butt against their traditional enemy, the British. Also, during the nineteenth century, the Germans were impelled to industrialize more quickly, and were more populous than the French, giving the Germans the upper hand initially. Poor military doctrines developed in the early twentieth century caused the utter waste of millions of young Frenchmen in the first half of the First World War, leading to a demographic crisis which put them in a very bad position at the start of World War II. In a way, losing the Empire and integrating with the rest of Europe has put the otherwise geographically blessed French in a far better position than they'd been since the Napoleonic Era.
