Jacob's Ladder, Silent Hill, and the Psychology of Death

  • I'm BACK! This video took me forever. I originally shelved the script for this video about two months ago. I did not know how to present this information in a coherent - as well as entertaining - way. Thankfully, with the help of a viewer named Daniel-san, I managed to crack the code... or at least get a result I was satisfied with.
My mind was kind of blown when I realized how much the Tibetan Book of the Dead not only influenced Jacob's Ladder, but also Silent Hill. I wonder if Hiroyuki Owaku and Masahiro Ito were conscious of how much Eastern religious dogma influenced their creations. I wonder what they would say if they say this video! :P

Looking back it's pretty miraculous Silent Hill even got made at all.
It was made by a small Japanese team with little experience, toilet paper budget and an order from brass to just clone Resident Evil.

They made masterpieces on limited tech revolutionized some things back in a day when you had to code the simplest things, each game made in less then a year 3 and 4 in half a year while others still to this day spend five to ten years fingering themselves while they have user friendly auto generating tools where you can create open world games in a month and their final results are not even worth calling a tech demo let alone a game. "herpaderps but making games is hard" bla bla bla then don't do it... If Team Silent managed to make masterpieces back in a day when actually was hard to make games then these new age clowns have no excuses. I seriously don't know who runs gaming companies and who gives them the diplomas but one thing is for sure they are occupied with a wrong job. From managements to development same thing.

( and no im not super religious or anti religious for context just pointing out the irony) personally if god does exist i believe the institution of organized church is probably the biggest wolf in sheeps clothing. Big reason im not really religious anymore by the time i was 14 my family had been through around 12 churches each one fhe pastor was either embezzeling money or settjng up pyramid schemes, cheating kn his wife with other peoples wives from fhe church or there was abuse going on. Many christians argue the infallibility of church since jesus was supposed to be the architect and its supposed to be gods house. What they forget is its been a long time since any disciples had any say and constantine already butchered the bible itself. Humans most impressive skill is their corrupting properties. And if anyone disagrees about my take on church really think hard about the catholic church and hell if youre protestant joel olsteen. Piece of shit has a mega church that can fit thousands of peoplw yet when the hurricane hit texas and he had masses of people begging for shelter he turned them away. Great christian attitude. To expand upon the idea of the Universal Mind I would recommend checking out the Vedic Parable about the two birds on a fruit bearing tree. It refers to Paramatman and Jiva, which are the two souls we all have as detailed in Hindi and Vedic tradition. It basically details how one bird was not tempted by Maya's illusions and remains a link to the Universal Consciousness while the other fell prey to Maya and became enthralled by the Physical World.

The answer to the question about why the souls of the dead don’t realize they’re dead is relatively easy to answer.
How long does it take us to realize we’re dreaming?
I do experience lucid dreaming frequently but that mental state doesn’t consistently get any traction. Sometimes even if I am aware that I am dreaming I still won’t have control over the dreaming environment or (most disappointingly) I’ll simply wake-up.
It takes a perfect sweet-spot of awareness of but harmony with my subconscious in the dream state to be able to remain asleep and gain some control of the dream.
If such a thing as an afterlife exists and it’s deeply connected to the full well of our psyche and not just our cognitive interface I can imagine that it would work much the same.

Whenever I heard of the phrase "as above, so below" my interpretation of the phrase (because I didn't know what it meant at the time) was that whatever happens above (heaven or equivalent) also happens below (hell or equivalent) and vice versa. Basically my 2 conclusions to this phrase is, neither exist, but if they do, they are one in the same. Two sides of the same coin. As below, so above.
And honestly, I prefer my initial conclusion of what I thought that phrase meant vs what it actually means (at least to Christians and similar) and I'll stick to my interpretation.
Neither heaven or hell exists, but if they do, they are the same place. What happens in one, happens in the other. As above, so below. As below, so above.

You should do something about the movie "Angel Heart". I'm not saying is Silent Hill related but it focuses on deep psychological themes. While Jacob's Ladder is a stairway to heaven, Angel Heart represents a descent to hell, wonderfully done.

I really want to know what you think about it because it's has a lot of food for thought and i believe you whould find it enriching.

Great video. As a life long horror nerd, it made me very happy.
Might I suggest someday you cover Clive Barker's UNDYING. I feel like it's criminally under discussed, and is a great example of how to make a unique horror gaming experience. Likewise, you could go into Clive Barker's JERICHO, and how the story itself is cool as hell, but the gameplay was largely awful, and why you think the jump forward in game mechanics messed with Barker's attempt at a later adaptation.
Thanks for all the ADHD vids, too. I've been diagnosed since 12, and your ADD content is very engaging.
