Daredevil Defends The Hulk - Caravan of Garbage

  • The Incredible Hulk was the first attempt into bringing the Green Goliath into live action. Running from 1978 to 1982 it was revived again in a series of telemovies beginning with The Trial Of The Incredible Hulk which aimed to introduce the duel characters of Matt Murdoch and Daredevil and then have him spin-off into his own series. None of that happened but it did a lot of things right including John Rhys Davies as the Kingpin. Thanks for watching!

For a first portrayal of Daredevil in a 1980 tv-movie, a lot of this seems surprisingly faithful.
The acrobatics looks legitimately good, as well as the fight scenes.
And while Fisk has hair, at least they got someone with the right size to play him.

It wasn't until a couple of years later that Frank Miller did the "Man Without Fear" miniseries that had him use the black outfit as his "Year One" costume, that was later adapted in the Netflix series. Okay, now look: as a Daredevil pilot, this is pretty good. But it is a Daredevil movie (TV special; whatever). It's really not that much of a Hulk production. I watched this immediately after the other Hulk TV special that featured Thor, which I liked much more for being fun and silly and actually having Hulk at the centre of its story.
The different frame rate every time it switches to Kingpin scenes really messes with me, but upon returning to this and bearing in mind that it barely has anything to do with Banner and is mostly a Daredevil story, I do like this and wish a DD show had gotten picked up, off the back of this.
Side note, John Rhys-Davies also played Thor in the 1994 Fantastic Four animated series. And also the '96 Hulk show, yeah yeah yeah.

I understand what Ang Lee was going for with the 2003 hulk movie but the execution is not all there for me. The comic book style of scene transitions and editing probably seemed like a good idea after the first raimi Spiderman, but in practice they just end up being unintentionally funny, alongside the fact that 2 of the 3 major action scenes (the forest one against the mutated dogs and the final one at the lake) are shot in absolute darkness so you can't see anything. I will agree that Eric Bana gave a pretty underrated performance as Banner

I really liked their explanation as to why and how Bruce Banner decides on Gamma Radiation. Even today, most comic stories and origins just kind of say SCIENCE and QUANTUM and that's fine but actually having it fleshed out the way they do even if it's total nonsense was refreshing to see especially from such an old show that was as you said just for kids.

I remember the local media being real excited about this production in Vancouver. The recently launched computer controlled LRT was used as a set piece, but they put an actor on the front car to be the 'driver'.
I didn't mind it, I thought it was rather fun when it came out. I haven't seen it since it originally aired but am glad to hear your review of it now from today's perspective.
TV & movies shot in Vancouver did allow productions to stretch their budget a bit due to the difference in the exchange rate, so that might account for the perceived extra production look.
