I don’t think ballistic gel is a 1 for 1 comparison for penetration. It is probably closer to 1 to 1.75 in gel. I think if you get a hotter HP in 45 you will be fine, maybe even the Hornady ballistic FTX. I have the Ruger 45 LC but it will also shoot 45 ACP with moon clips. I have found the 185 gr golden saber in 45 ACP is very nice in my 45 LC revolver. Probably because it is moving fast. I think the reason you are having expansion issues with your 45 LC is both clogged HP’s but even more relevant is I think the 4 layers of denim are slowing the bullet below expansion threshold. If you get a HP moving 950+, I think you would be good to go.
The bullet fully expanded, by the way. I wonder if the second block had been a few feet farther away would that have made any difference? Might have to try that in future tests.
