    of course, there will be a difference between the photo and your painting, that's art, that's your work. it's your interpretation of the picture, if you want a total replica of the photo in painting format, there are plenty of apps out there to change a photo into black and white, or whatever shades of colour or even change the photo totally into painting format. love you paintings and videos. thanks.

      I agree that..Hi it is necessarily to copy all the human feature when painting portrait ?

      @@drewgarcia9823 I mean if the legs are off it doesn't matter but the left eye was a bit high and fixing facial features will have a huge impact.

    Wonderful video Chelsea! I've been doing something like this for a few years now, but slightly different. Every night after I am finish painting, I take a photo of the piece. Once I'm readied for bed, I go in, adjust the photo similar to your instruction, then add it to that painting's own album. Then I can flip through from start to finish on the entire painting process. My own homemade GIF, I just run the slider back and forth to see it move and make my plans for the next evenings painting. It helps focus the eyes on areas that might need attention. Also, if you are doing this on a phone, it really changes the appearance of the painting. It's more like looking at it in a well lit room from a distance, which sharpens the detail, or at least it does for me. Cheers! Keep up the great work!

      I totally agree! A phone or thumbnail on a computer are just so helpful -- I really like having the Navigator widget in photoshop open, as that's often my most helpful tool. But that gif, or album of photos, or watching the time lapse playback for my paintings, are all so helpful. And that time at the end of the day makes a huge difference -- often when I see pics right before bed I get a very clear sense of what I want to start the next day's painting with, though I rarely have that clarity in the middle of a painting session. Thank you so much for the kind words and for sharing your thoughts!

    sometimes i do this by taping only the top edge of the photocopy right to the canvas and lifting it up and down like flipping pages as animators do to copy it. gets hard to do big painting though. but it gives great comparisons so it gets a good likeness.

    This is a great hack! I've used photoshop extensively for photos, but never thought to use it for my painting practice. I feel like with this hack I can finally tackle portraits! Thank you so much for sharing, and I'm so glad I found your channel! Happy new follower!

    I use a grid (something I was taught as an art major by a master painter) but I really want to get better doing it with my eye! I feel like the grid makes me too tight. Thanks for this video. You could also adjust the transparency of the layer with a varied color when comparison.

    i use the % transparency down to overlay them exactly instead of futzing with edges and sizes, then make back to 100% on that other layer

      So I’m not totally sure, but I think she’s showing herself doing this after the underpainting step some painters do. It’s similar to a sketch, and is typically done with raw umber and a lot of whatever medium because it dries quicker and is easier to adjust. That way when she paints on top it’s easier to know how the whole thing will look and easy to make adjustments if needed. Hope this helps!

    I've watched your video twice and I have no idea why you're doing this? You already have the image so why paste a photo of it over it? I don't see the point. What are you going to do with it once you're ready with this action. Are you going to use it as a reference again? You call it a trick, but a trick for what? Maybe I was expecting something else (because of the title), but I just don't get it...

    • @csabo1725
      @csabo1725 Před 3 lety +6

      I'm with you I'm totally confused. The title is totally misleading. I think she is using this to make small adjustments to the nearly finished painting.

      I also am missing something. If this is to do an oil painting, how is the image transferred to the canvas? I have no problem with tracing. I can see if this will be a digital painting. Anyway, I’m curious. I enjoy the videos a lot.

    • @dadamssg87
      @dadamssg87 Před 2 lety +4

      this is to check the accuracy of your painting's proportions. If you know your painting looks off but can't quite pinpoint *why*, this is a way to see where you're off. After you figure out where your painting is off, you go make the corrections, take a new photo, compare again, rinse and repeat.

  • @stevenhopkins2925
    @stevenhopkins2925 Před 2 lety +3

    I don't see the point in going to all that effort, you might as well trace or project the image. I prefer to see slight differences in my pictures so everyone knows I did it myself. I can't move away from the feeling that tracing, projecting and now photoshop is just cheating.
