- Sonic Colours is a game that the Sonic fanbase can't seem to decide whether it likes or hates; and the waters have been muddied even further by SEGA releasing a port so botched that it's actually kind of hilarious.
But is there a way to salvage that port? Or are there alternatives that provide the definitive Sonic Colours experience? Well today, that's what we're gonna take a look at.

I'd never heard of Colors DX. I played Colors on Dolphin close to when Ultimate came out but I just downloaded a 100% save file so I could skip the missions, the game's a lot more fun when you're not doing busywork half the time
I'd love to see a mod that re-orders the levels to put the two main acts first, then unlocks all of the mission levels after it so they're fully optional
wow, i completely missed this. last year i made a dynamic texture pack that automatically changes your inputs depending on the dolphin mapping, but it has a bug that i should update where you need to open the controller settings for the bindings to load. maybe i should also make it compatible with DX
Definitely do a video on Sonic 3. Those sprites in the intro really caught my interest.
While not a big deal, there’s also a 3D boost wisp mod
For Game Suggesstions, I'd love to see some Heroes recommendations for mods that help the game run/look better (whether it be the abandonware PC Port or Dolphin) & maybe some gameplay tweaks to try (I like OG Heroes, what can I say?)
Also, maybe a quick tutorial on how you add Dolphin Games (or emulator games in general) to Steam as shortcuts? I feel like I can't find how to do that ANYWHERE or they all tell me to buy another Hard Drive? Its confuses me.
Edit: I forgot to compliment the video. It was great! The Ultimate Mod Recommendations AND the DX talk was cool, & I definitely agree on Colors being better when you go Red Ring Hunting, they really help you both explore the level & get those S-Ranks for people who like that aswell.
I popped a tutorial on the steam shortcut thing on Twitter earlier today (should be in my media tab), but I’ll definitely touch on it in a future video!
Heroes is the one that’s come up most often so far, so it’s looking likely that I’ll tackle it, if not next then certainly at some point!
I feel like I never really played the game until I played it with the Wiimote + nunchuck controller combo last year. I’d always used a classic or GameCube controller and thought the game was a mediocre slog. It’s not meant to be as big as Unleashed or Generations, it’s on the Wii for a reason. and once I was able to actually experience it like that, I found a decently fun game that made me want to go for 100%, and that I can easily see myself coming back to again.
Still nowhere near as good as most of the other boost games (including the DS version of Colors itself), it’s level design still holds it back most of the time, but it’s a fun time nonetheless.
Although I wish I could play one game that has the intended 2 main act structure, as well as the acts and missions from the DS version (maybe with Unleashed/Gens gameplay too?). Now THAT would be Sonic Colors ULTIMATE

How I play it:
Sonic Colours Ultimate, on steam deck, using lighting fix mod, improved animations mod and UI fixes mod.
And when the re rainbow mod comes out, add that to the list
Oh, I wasn't aware of Colors DX, neat. I only knew of the True Colors mod that somewhat did the level order thing as well.
12:13 It's not just the frenzy wisp jump that gets affected by the 60 FPS thing, btw. Falling egg pawns also fall super slowly at 60 FPS for Colors on emulators which may or may not be a good thing. Meanwhile, in Colors Ultimate, it seems like they overcorrected it by making them drop like rocks instead.
Ultimate did fix the egg pawns falling too fast problem... I just wish that they've also fixed the rest of the issues... But maybe they will when Sonic colors ultimate eventually gets ported to steam
@@connorplays6263 here we are, and now we wait for the mods to roll in... if this really was enough to revive this game's modding scene, didn't even live long enough for people to finish fixing the game

Its easy, play the Christian Whitehead versions of Sonic 1 and 2 on mobile since its widescreen and has more content. As for Sonic 3 play either Sonic 3 Complete or Sonic 3 AIR. Complete is a rom hack which is basically the full game on a single cartridge with a ton of fixes/changes and customisation options while AIR is basically widescreen Sonic 3 with quite a bit of options as well. Essentially just do that and avoid Sonic Origins and you're all good.
Should be easy, Sonic 1:Forever, Sonic CD: Restored, Sonic 2: Absolute, Sonic 3: A.I.R. We also have Sonic 3:Complete and Sonic Delta: Reloaded. Sonic Origins actually has a many fixes and changes to make it better, and that alone is good enough to be called “official definitive version”
To be fair there not much to talk about when it comes to the classic gamrd

How I play it: I boot up the DS version. Colors DS is quite possibly a top 3 sonic game for me.

I haven't played Colors in a while, maybe a year ago. But I just remember that I didn't jive with the game's level design; the greater emphasis on platforming combined with the speed and reaction-time focused style of the boost formula made for a poor combination and I just found Colors to be fine, decent; but never really reached the heights of Unleashed's or even Generations level design. I think Colors has some decent ideas, but the general idea of combining slower styled platforming with the fast paced boost seems like a poor idea from the get-go and I wish they either changed the level design to be more like Unleashed or remove the boost entirely. (I initially thought the greater emphasis on platforming was because of the Wii's hardware, but after seeing Forces. I'm more confident that it's an intentional design decision by the director/game designer Morio Kishimoto)

The only problem with Colours DX is that it doesnt run well on lower end machines such as my own

The constant stutter is because of Denuvo, an anti-piracy program that works TOO WELL, and was the same responsible for poor performance in Resident Evil 8

Can't install it, I get an error message, unhandled exception about cpkmaker.dll (which is indeed there) I don't get it. Does this work on Windows 11?

Wait, so, how does this work exactly? Did this guy just essentially make a PC Port by himself that rebuilds an ISO of Sonic Colors? Like Ship of Harkinian or the Mario 64 PC Port?
Sort of! It’s not quite on the level of a decompilation like 64PC/SoH, but it does work by rebuilding the ISO with a custom files added in place of some vanilla ones.
My understanding is that this runs in a custom version of the dolphin emulator. Made specifically to enhance and run the Wii version of the game. Kinda like how sonic 3 air runs on a custom Sega Genesis emulator.

Are they fr not even patching Colors Ultimate anymore? I haven't seen anything since December and Jesus Christ they can't just leave it the way it is.
I'd say at this point barely expect something, but once its at the 1 year mark fully lose hope.

I would, but I’m not even sure if Unleashed can be played through start to finish via emulator right now - last I looked there were still crashes to iron out. As it stands I could sum up a ‘how I play it’ as ‘I have a Series X’. One day I’d love to do a proper mod deep dive though!

personally I do think Colors Ultimate will be fixed later by "mods. all i personally think its more we just wait to wait till way later till someone has the drive to fix what issues still lie with the game. after all. We didn't get exact fixes with something like Adventure 1 and adventure 2 till way later. Im sure if the game gets put on steam that drive will come back for it to have more modders on it.
If that does end up being the case, I’ll certainly do a video to revisit the situation later down the road; it’s just that I sadly don’t see it happening. Would love to be wrong though!

Me looking at all of this 3D gameplay: did we play the same game?
Sure, the "extra" stages that were added later in development are like mostly 2D and can be blocky, but all of the original main stages have a healthy blend of 2D and 3D. The shallow claim that its not 3D has always bugged me because it just seems like people dont understand this game's level design and what it accomplishes. Colors is definitely not my favorite, but I've really gained appreciation for it over time, since I used to think it was just ok as a kid.
