How to Capture Dance Movement | Take and Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey

- Long exposure photography allows a picture to build up over time. That’s exactly what you want when your subject is moving and you need to show all that movement in a single still photo. This is a surprisingly simple technique that’s perfect for sports portraits or in this case dance photography.
In his small home studio (just 15 feet wide) photographer, Gavin Hoey starts by hanging up a makeshift black background. For lighting, he uses a continuous LED to capture the dancers’ moves during a long exposure. A Flashpoint Xplor400 is then added to freeze the dancer with a burst of flash. The key to making all this work is using a camera setting called slow sync flash, which is also known as 2nd curtain sync flash. Different name, same results.
Luckily Gavin takes you through all of the information you need to recreate this shot at home. By the end of the video, you'll understand how and why combining two very different light types creates such amazing and beautiful dance photos.

THANKS SO MUCH FOR WATCHING! - Jak na to + styl
I'm not sure if I missed Gavin's explanation, but for those who want to try this, setting your camera/lens to manual focus and focusing on a spot in the room where the dancer will end up, is an effective way to get the flash exposure sharp.
Thank you. I was wondering about that.
Contents like these can make you very grateful for having CZcams in our time!
Love Gavin! His enthusiasm and his teaching/skills makes his tutorials fun to watch. Thanks Gavin for being YOU. You are appreciated
Rear curtain best explanation ever. Clear, precise, in less than 10 mins. I watched like 8 videos before watching this. Now I know exactly how to use it. Fantastic job!
That “oops” first curtain sync looked really cool too! I like that you showed this, because it teaches about rear curtain sync, and about how you can even be creative with the first curtain sync as well!
Teaching and creating fine art pieces at the same time. You’re like a tenth degree black belt who has achieved mastery at levels of knowledge that the rest of us don’t even know exist. You really have outdone yourself with this one, Gavin.
Sophie did a great job working within the limits of the room! I can only imagine what she could do with a large space!
Indeed Rhonda. It was a challenge, even for an experienced dancer, to repeat dance moves over and over again in very little room.
Whenever I think your videos cannot get any better, they do.
Gavin is my favorite photographer! so creative and unique but at the same time very humble and fun.
that was brilliant, such great shots and simply explained. Gavin is such a good teacher
Gavin Hoey, a brilliant photography instructor and the perfect antidote to photographic ruts. Always fun to watch, lucidly explained, and you walk away itching to try out yourself what he's been up to. Great job by Sophie and the studio assistant too. 👍
Everything seems easier when explained by Gavin. Great video as always! Thank you!
When you think you seen every technique, Gavin comes out and shows a new and easier way.

Gavin just has a way of simplifying it all. NOW I understand how to do this. He's right though, Seth Miranda is the King of the Shutter Drags for portraits. No photoshopping by Seth, just straight from the camera it's stunning!
Just perfect. Thanks for the tutorial.
Brilliant! Thank you Gavin.

Great video! I used to achieve the same results with the old stroboscopic method. It is tedious and very technical. Gavin was able to simplify this and made it fun for both the model and photographer. Great job and results! This will definitely be my new method!
