WLS had its New Year's Eve "Montage", but Drake-Chenault's History of Rock & Roll called it a Timesweep. And now Jesus music gets the same treatment, with this survey of audio clips of the songs, singers, and groups that contributed to the music of the Jesus movement.
It starts with a brief introduction, takes a timesweep back from 2015 to 1969, and then gives each year 2-5 minutes of clips from the music released that year, with album art for nearly every clip.
When the timesweep gets to 1977 through 1979, the survey through the year ends with the to 30 songs, based on popularity and airplay, as 1977 is the earliest that such information was compiled. And, since Christian radio playing this type of music was still in its infancy, there were some songs that had tremendous staying power; for example, Don Francisco's "He's Alive" charted as #1 in 1978, though it was released in 1977, and it continued to be near the top of the list in 1979.
As far as top songs lists for those years are concerned, there are two online resources that I utilized in making the song selections. "Streets of Gold" is a Jesus music radio show that has several lists of top songs, including ones for 1978 and 1979. See their web site here:
    Streets of Gold - www.streetsofgoldradio.com
The second resource used was from Top Christian Hits, a site that has compiled yearly lists of this music from 1977 to the present, based on CCM Magazine lists, and currently from Billboard Magazine lists. You can find them at:

My boyfriend and I excepted Jesus together in 1972 three months before we got married. Almost 51 years later, we’re still serving the Lord in a great capacity. We are so excited that revival is back in our country once again with the young people praise his holy name.!!

We would go to Jesus festivals in the 70s! Camp there for 4 days and praise God, worship God and sing songs to Him! What a time we had then! I am 62 years old now and have been a Christian since 16! God has kept His hand on me all my life and I praise Him for loving me!

I was saved in the Jesus Movement in 1970. When me and my ex lived in LA, we used to go to all the Christian Coffeehouses and all these bands would be there in a closer, more intimate setting than the festivals. We went to Daisy II, the Christian nightclub every weekend. Karen Lafferty, Michael and Terry Talbot, and so many others would be there. Keith Green taught a Bible Study there during the week. I had what I believe was rheumatoid arthritis in my middle finger of my right hand (it was excruciatingly painful, and my knuckle had been becoming more and more distorted). Terry Talbot was there one Saturday night and he called out a healing of arthritis in a finger, and thepain immediately stopped, and over thenext few weeks, my finger began to straighten out. I was 23 then, and I'm 73 now, (holy cow! That was 50 years ago! 😮) and never had a problem with it again. Never did get to thank him (Terry Talbot), lol. We didn't realize how blessed we were to live in LA, where so much of the Christian music was centered, until we left LA.

Oh yeah! By 81-82, there were Christian concerts every night of the week in SoCal. Only one I ever paid for was Stryper @Universal 87. Faves: Darrell Mansfield-he was at my house once, needed a shower after just gettin off a plane from Korea. D &K, Rez, Keith Green 🤯, Undercover, and...Steve Taylor! Saw a lot of them @ Magic Mountain. Anyhoo, the music has been, and is, such a blessing in my life. Honestly, sometimes only a song can reach me. Praise the Lord, he's comin back! Y'all ready??

I’ll never forget a phone call from a DJ up in PA. He asked if Laurie was in! He wanted to interview her as one of the pioneers of Christian Contemporary music! She was in The New Folk (Armageddon Experience) and they did an interview which was SO fun! The Jesus revolution was a sweet time. We were in SO Cal and Laurie’s uncle said we needed to go to a guy preaching in a HOUSE! Turns out it was Chuck Smith and the little church was Calvary Chapel!

The Lord has been faithful these 50 years, not that they have all been easy, especially since 2020 began, the worst 3 years in the 50. But revival is about to explode once again; no wonder the devil is nervous!

I am a 62 y/o grandmother who first got introduced to Jesus Music through a radio show called the Come Alive Show with Harry Thomas back in 1974, '75. I think the station was WPEN and the show played from 2pm - 4pm on Saturday afternoons. As a new Christian, age 15, when I first heard Larry Norman, Andre Crouch, Evie, The Omartians, Talbot Bros, 2nd Chapter of Acts and Keith Green I said "This is music that expresses the happiness I feel in Christ." This was before Christian Music was labeled CCM and before it became "big business". I thank God for all who contributed to helping a teen put into words the desires of her heart in song. This music was primitively sincere and honest. It helped me to hang onto Christ before I knew He was really the one hanging onto me. I praise God for all the people He has chosen to use to make Jesus known. There is a special place in heaven for all of those highlighted here.

In 1970 at the age of ten I accepted Jesus as my Lord & Savior. On Sundays, I would listen to The Harbor of Rest & then they'd play these Christian singers & the songs that I loved: Love Song, 2nd Chapter of Acts, Andrae Crouch, Evie, Larry Norman, Phil Keaggy, Children of the Day, John Fischer, Chuck Girard, The Archers, Keith Green, BJ, The Imperials, Don Fransisco, Petra & Amy Grant...I owe you all a debt of gratitude for the music that I listen to on the radio during my early years as a Christian. I know there were many others but these are the ones that I remember & still sing their songs.

Excellent overview…Love Song was my first experience with Jesus Music! On the East Coast God was using the ministry of Teen Challenge and David Wilkerson to reach urban youth. I was Saved at Philadelphia Teen Challenge in 1971. Barry McGuire introduced us to the 2nd chapter of Acts - what great anointed voices! (Easter Song is still a classic) and McGuire gave us “Bull frogs and Butterflies “ and “The Music Machine”! We built a model and used the concept to teach children in Lancaster , Ohio when I was pastoring my first church ! Great innovator. I had the privilege to minister with Tim Shepherd and Dallas Holm at 1st Assembly of God in Dallas Texas!

Keith Green was actually an old testament prophet in modern times. I know several guys who are featured in this video, and most of them weren’t as fond of him back then. When Keith finally gave his life to the Lord! It was 100%…… He did not accept any compromise in his life, or anyone else he encountered! I am now 58 years old, I spent my entire life knowing Christ. Honestly, Keith was actually right in the end. Either we live with conviction, or we live lukewarm like most of the American churches today.all of us will have to choose, life with Christ or life with this world!? Choose Christ!

I was born again 79. A cassette of Keith Green's first 2 records was given to me. Then I heard KBRT 740AM (southern California, Mormon-owned then) playing tapes of Jesus music, no DJs. Then, I found the Christian bookstore @ the local mall (upstairs from the Mormon bookstore-a connection?🤔). There, I found this music. I gravitated to the harder rock, so I think This Time Thru (DeGarmo and Key) was the first I bought. Finally, in that oh-so-amazing year, I was taken to my first concert: the Resurrection Band. My mind was blown, and convinced me rock for Jesus can be used to reach people with the gospel. Keep on rockin for the Rock, y'all!

Jonathan from The Chosen plays the role of the anointed hippie who started the Jesus Movement in 1969. Matthew 6:1-2 ❤️ God used outcast, long hair hippies in 1969 to spark a revival that still goes on today. Amazing transformed people continue to reach the lost and expand God's kingdom. The Jesus Movement is still growing today. Chuck Smith taught the whole counsel of God, and said "blessed are the flexible." Calvery Chapel Costa Mesa grew because Pastor Chuck cared about souls. He preached "you need power from on High, you need to be baptized in the Holy Spirit." What began in 1969 in Southern California, spread through Oregon, Mt Shasta, Idaho, Germany, England, Thailand and 21 orphanages.

Erik Nelson & Michelle Pillar's album touched me deeply - I can still remember the tears and the emotions I went through while listening to that album over 40 years ago. The Misfit was one of those albums that revealed the love of God to me in a way that I have never forgotten. I'm thankful for the music that came out of my generation during those years, but more thankful that God revealed himself to many of us in a time when there were so many other distractions pulling people away from considering the claims of Christ. Sort of reminds me of today with the culture so set against the idea and reality of God's love and His assurance that evil will be vanquished forever. Thanks for putting snippets of these meaningful and creative songs together!

Just saw "The Jesus Revolution" and was searching about the Jesus movement. I was born in 1971 so I was a child back then. I loved this video you made. I didn't know that a lot of the songs I knew were from the Jesus movement. I knew a few of them from camp when I was a kid. Also, some of the Christian artists I knew from the 1980's started then, which I didn't know. Thanks for putting this together!

I didn't get saved until November 7th, 1981, but the Catholic Church I attended had a guitar mass, and quite a few of the songs listed on here we sang without my knowing. I started listening to contemporary Christian radio in I would say 1983 or 1984. And a few of the songs listened here actually managed to bleed over to that era. And then some of the songs I knew because more "modern" artists remade the song, so I got to experience it that way. There are a few that I knew that was like on some sort of throwback Thursday time slot, and I heard like Phil Keggy's "What a Day." I practically "grew up" on all things Amy Grant, so that was awesome. I am so thankful both for this video and for the movie "Jesus Revolution." This video was awesome, but if it wasn't for the movie, this video probably would not have made it into my feed. So thank you for both.

Steven Weyhrich, thanks so much for posting this. After reading all the comments I think I'm the oldest in this group, but I came to Jesus, born again on April 12, 1972 in a small church in Minnesota. I was in my early 30's then, but have remembered these times with much joy, and sadness at times. I have had to bury 3 wives in all that time, but remember with my 2nd wife going to the Jesus festivals and camping out and listening to music for 3, 4 days. I think the one in PA. was 4 days. Fantastic memories. We had our two young daughters with us, and though one would accept Christ, the other one hasn't (yet).
I have been collecting some of these songs that were mentioned, have some on vinyl which I am and have put on digital. I remember taking my Dad to see the Bill Gaither Trio was back in the 70's, when our Cousin Henry Slaughter and his wife Hazel Slaughter would play the first 1 hour and a half, then the Bill Gaither Trio would play the next hour and a half. Though I missed the Jesus Movement of the late 60's into early 70's (I got in on the tail end of it), better late than never. The 60's were a tough time. First wife, joined the Army, 3 sons, the Vietnam War, etc., She later died of MS. These songs you included have brought some joyful moments of remembrance to this old (in my 8th decade) man, and I want to thank you so very much. Know you could not include all of the songs due to time constraints and all, but you did a wonderful job.

I started high school in 1969 - graduated in June 1973. I was definitely a lover of the Jesus People music of that time. In fact, I still have most of my albums from that time. I have every album of Keith Green's also, and did not live in CA. I picked songs based on what "charted" back in the day; so no one was favored or disfavored based on anything else but that. What memories came to me as you went back in time. It was early to mid-70s when I started listening to Keith Green, Barry McGuire and 2nd Chapter of Acts, Don Francisco, Amy Grant... I came to Christ through the planting of Roy Hicks Jr. at Eugene's Faith Center. His teaching and preaching firmly planted God's Word in my heart and Keith Green watered it and still does daily for me. We were blessed that Faith Center hosted many of these performers. I use that word loosely. Many were performers, but Keith Green was so authentic. Our Jesus festivals, that I went to often were called Jesus Northwest. What fellowship! What great memories this brings back. I recommitted my life to Jesus in 1975, but struggled to all through the early 1970s, but surrendered finally in 1975. Things were better in 1976, but in 1977 a break up with my girl nearly killed me because it wasn’t for a good reason, no reason at all, and that’s what made it so hard. Another love saved me, but she always felt second best, and after 44 years we are separated, for good I’m afraid. Now I am drawn again to the comfort of inspired music. I was lucky to meet a number of these artists, and I thank them all for the kindness they showed, and the music they shared. Thank you!

This is a most impressive time sweep of these tunes which were truly alternative back in the '70s and I really appreciate your opening overview of the Christian music radio shows which were aired on Top-40 stations early on Sunday mornings and that was actually my introduction to it all, dubbing Jesus Solid Rock onto reel from vinyl at WOOS-FM in Canton, Ohio in '78, good times. And I recall making an announcement about that program in adult Sunday school at church and getting crickets in response and O well, maybe someone reached for the dial and heard some Jesus music on the radio. And a year later I was back in California, KNBA the Mighty 1190 in Vallejo, and I enjoyed playing a handful of Christian tunes with all the hits and requests, two popular ones were Freddy Fender's Wasted Days and Wasted Nights and Signs by the Five Man Electrical Band and I just loved that audience and that little station had a monster signal, and incredibly Bob Dylan's Gotta Serve Somebody was a Top-40 hit that year and I played the album version, a little longer, plus a few of his album tracks here and there, such as When He Returns. Thanks again for your work with this compilation. 😀

Steven, thank you for compiling this "timesweep." I was born again in 1979, so much of the groups, singers, and songs I am unfamiliar with but a few were around at that time because it was some of these songs that lighted the path to Christ for me. After becoming a Christian, I had a voracious appetite for Christian music. In fact, I went to Belmont College in Nashville for the purpose of making Christian music my vocation. That didn't pan out (Waaayyy too competitive and, candidly, not very Christian in camaraderie), but I continued to sing in churches and events and remained committed to CCM. Anyway, while many of the songs from your 1969-1979 timesweep were unfamiliar, most were VERY familiar in the timesweep of 1980-1989. Again, thanks for taking the time to put this together. Being somewhat associated with production, I appreciate the time you took to research, compile, and piece it all together. Not easy and it must have taken a long time. If there's a way to contribute financially, post the link. God bless you because he blessed me through your work here.

And, I always enjoyed those timesweep type of music compilations for popular music, and felt that Christian music really needed it also! 🙂

I mail-ordered two poorly done Wilson McKinley albums and figured they made maybe 200 or so copies ... seemed that low budgeted ... so shocked to see both albums as well-known enough to get on this timesweep. Favorite got started albums: earliest Maranatha Albums (Hi Debbie!), Explo72, What A Day, 2ndChapter of Acts (Easter Song), Love Song, To The Bride. I am going crazy! God is one who answers prayers. I’ve been looking for Christian rock music that has that same dynamic and creative sound that I hear in various rock sub-genres. I’ve been browsing through a lot of CZcams channels that have a collection of “secular” sounding gospel but most, if not all of it is pop, hip hop and RnB. A lot of which I appreciate and I think is quite good, but what I’ve really been craving is some good, creative, experimental rock music that feeds my soul! This makes me so happy. I’ve always loved the “golden oldies” (sorry 😬), but I’ve come to listen to and appreciate more of these songs recently. And I know that, in time, there will be more rock music from today’s music scene that we can listen to that is just as creatively rich, diverse, and satisfying that glorifies the Lord. The glorifying the Lord part is what makes it that much more awesome. Thank you for this.

The movement was real, though at the time many Christians believed if it was real God would have made the converts just like them.

Lots of free concerts in the early days. The more money got involved the more it became influenced by commercial value. The worship music we sang in early days were written to help teach scripture or some key idea from scripture. Simple yet transformative!

The reason a lot of bands stopped being bands was because they weren't making money. There is nothing wrong with making money to stay in business.

I was a young teenager when Christian Contemporary Music became popular. I grew up on The 2nd Chapter Of Acts, The Imperials, Barry McGuire, Honeytree, Liberation Suite, Andre Crouch, Love Song, Evie....What an amazing time the 70's were for Christian music! I wouldn't trade it for anything! I'm so lucky to have lived it!

This was such a blessing. I can't way all the same music would be picked by Christians so heavily influenced by Christian music during that time, but it was totally awesome. I believe God directed you to do this. Thank you so much!

I never heard most of these praise songs of Jesus. Love the album cover art. I did grow up in this Era and in Hawaii then, AM (amplitude modulation) Raido was king. Of course we have The KING, Ha Melech, Jesus
