  • The Smothers Brothers perform the song, They Call The Wind Maria, on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.
The Smothers Brothers, Tom and Dick, are one of the most iconic comedy duos in the history of television. Tom and Dick began performing as a duo in the late 1950s, playing in coffeehouses and clubs in San Francisco. Their act consisted of music, comedy, and witty banter, which quickly gained them a following.
The Smothers Brothers became a household name in the late 1960s with their variety show, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. The show was groundbreaking in its approach to comedy, pushing the boundaries with political satire and social commentary. The show also featured up-and-coming musical acts, including The Doors and The Who, and introduced the world to comedians like Steve Martin and George Carlin.
The Smothers Brothers' irreverent style has made them a beloved and enduring force in American comedy.

In the early 60's when they were starting out folk singing was very popular. They were guests on the "Ed Sullivan Show" as well as a folk singing variety show called "Hootenany" which I only watched for "The Smothers Brothers," "Peter, Paul, and Mary" and "The Kingston Trio". I was only 5 or 6 at the time, or would have realized just how many musical icons were guests on that show at the beginning of their careers.😮😮❤

      Nothing beats sibling harmony
There are other individual songs... Some examples: "Long Time Blues", "That's My Song", "Down In the Valley".
There are also full or half albums. On "Two Sides of the Smothers Brothers", the second side is all singing. Dick has a solo album. There is an album that I think is called "The Smothers Brothers Play It Straight".

@@DanielBarberMusic I wish the albums would use them playing instead of using an orchestra (or whatever it is).
There are some songs that have limited jokes , or they will sing a verse straight and do jokes, and then sing another verse straight. I count those because at least they finish the song eventually. As time went on, they seem to have given up finishing songs.
Some more I can think of... Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair, I Never Will Marry, Mediocre Fred (Tom solo), Tom's Song (Tom solo), Jenny Brown

“Paint your Wagon”. Harve Presnell sang this song in the movie. Folk songs are some of the best forms of music and song. Loved to watch The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. Tommy Smothers was one the funniest and cutest men alive. Just adorable. Dick was always the serious one. Handsome, too! But, boy, could he sing! According to Tommy, their mother loved Dick the best. That was always part of their comedy routine. Was heartbroken when their show was canceled as they wouldn’t bow down to the powers that be nor compromise their principles. RIP, Tommy Smothers!

Words: Alan Jay Lerner, Music: Frederick Loewe. From the 1951 musical "Paint Your Wagon". Great version of this song, which is not a folksong of any kind, or even remotely related to a folksong, in case anyone is wondering. It would seem that they were were gently poking fun at the popularity of this song during the so-called "folk revival", it having been recorded by the Kingston Trio and Burl Ives, among others.
There's an earlier, black and white clip of the (very young) Smothers Brothers singing "I Talk to the Trees", which is also from "Paint Your Wagon". However, they didn't sing that one straight.

That's what they did! They did parodies and satires of songs. It's how their act originated. I am currently reading, "Dangerously Funny: The Uncensored Story of the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour" by David Bianculli. It's excellent! It's brought be back to all these old clips!

I never had a chance to see the play, but "Paint Your Wagon" as a movie is a jaw dropping adventure! Just to see Clint Eastwood break out in song!!! Amazing!
Tommy Smothers, rest in power. A brave uniquely talented performer. Be Tommy Smothers today; do something creative and brave to make others think, and smile, and laugh out loud and maybe even make someone angry, but in a good way. 🗽🎭🗽

Thanks for pointing out that it was actually a Broadway song, not a folk song. But their rendition of it is just gorgeous and the lead-in pretty hilarious. Tommy, you'll be missed 😥

Love you Tommy. R.I.P. Thank you for everything. G

Such a musical duet with a zany innocent craziness of Tom. We loved them and their fightw with the network to present things to the public. The execs could not control Tom and it made them crazy. We loved the for it.
