  • The NFL is one of the biggest and most profitable sports leagues in the United States. But players in the NBA have the highest average salary per player and earn more money from endorsement deals than NFL and MLB players.

    Also everyone: why does the NFL try to reach outside the U.S.?

    • @MrSupdup
      @MrSupdup Před 4 lety +93

      But that's makes sense though. Leagues aren't games - the NBA isn't a world sport, basketball is. The NFL play American Football, which is not an international game. There's a reason only one of the two are at the Olympics. Basketball is played in most countries in the world, so it makes sense that the NBA tries to reach out to other markets that also play Basketball. Why does the NFL reach out to a country like Australia when no one in the country even knows the rules of the game? Stick to the markets that make sense, you're wasting your time trying to break into countries that have no interest replacing their national football code with America's.

    • @roccoanthony8930
      @roccoanthony8930 Před 3 lety +6

      BRBallin1 no, it’s not what you think it is. For most people outside of USA, they don’t view NBA as an actual “sports game”...it’s more like a TV variety show in prime time.
      The game of basketball is global in the sense that rugby, cricket, golf is. Most people outside of USA views basketball as an “amateur” sports, not a “professional” sports where you would pursue your dreams.
      If we’re talking about international competition, Soccer, Ice Hockey, and Baseball DWARFS basketball and American football.
      Actually the reason why soccer, ice hockey, baseball aren’t as popular as basketball or American football in USA is probably because USA in general isn’t as “dominant” as it once used to be. Soccer and Ice Hockey is owned by European teams while Baseball is owned by Caribbean Players.

    • @MrSupdup
      @MrSupdup Před 3 lety +33

      @@roccoanthony8930 uh... what?
      Basketball is the third largest sport in the world. It is only eclipsed by Football (soccer) and Cricket.
      Neither Ice Hockey nor Baseball are even remotely the size of Basketball. Very few countries play either of those games on a large scale outside of the US & Canada. Ice Hockey is played big in Russia, Baseball in Japan, and other then that there are no large leagues anywhere in the world.
      Ice Hockey doesn't even make the top 25 world sports. American Football is technically a bigger "world sport" than Ice Hockey, because more people play American Football and watch the NFL in the US then people play and watch Ice Hockey in every country and league on the planet combined. Ice Hockey doesn't even rate on the biggest "Winter" sports - Skiing is a much more popular sport in terms of actual participants - by an order of magnitude - and in an Olympic or World Championship year it also eclipses Ice Hockey in viewership.
      Baseball has a pretty big international viewership, but in terms of countries it's played in, its smaller then Ice Hockey. Baseball's enormous popularity in the US and Japan puts it in the world rankings, even though its only 2 countries with sizeable player bases and viewership (the Dominican Republic and Cuba, by international standards, do not have significant viewership).
      And I'm not even going to touch on your weird comparison to Rugby, Cricket and Golf. Basketball is neither 'global' in the same way (its in about 50 more countries then Rugby and Cricket), nor amateur like golf is.

    NFL firstly you can't even see their face so marketing a player is harder. Also you can wear Jordans anywhere but you can't wear football cleats everywhere 😂😂😂😂. The average football career is under 4 years so that's hard to build up a fanbase. NBA on the other hand on average it's 10 years minimum so brands have a few years to build up the promotion.

      I think a lot of it comes down to football being a far more injurious sport.
      The protective equipment that keeps players from becoming celebrities is because the sport kills your body. It's also the reason why you can't play as many games. The football players would croak at 40 if they had to play twice a week.

Canada, Russia, and America is pretty much all the big countries that have NHL players and therefore a market. NBA has players from Canada, Russia, Europe, Australia, South America, Africa and China had Yao Ming, which helped the NBA make even more money. Pretty much all the big countries/continents + a lot of other small countries within those huge continents. Which is why I’m surprised the NFL makes more TV revenue. Regardless, all these players get paid bank. If NFL players are salty they can’t make the money NBA players make... they should have played basketball. NFL has large teams so the pie is harder to split. Hard to also fully guarantee a contract when on any play a player can be hurt and it be career ending.
    What the NFL should do is limit how much of the cap the QBs get. No player on a team should eat up 25% of the cap and the other 51 guys get the rest. That’s crazy

    The highest paid NBA Players who also happen to be some of the highest paid athletes in the world aren't necessarily just athletes or necessarily the best players in the NBA. Lebron James, Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant are celebrities and their personality as well as media and social media engagement is what builds their brand and pads their earnings. Kawhi Leonard is probably the best player in the nba right now and he is a textbook introvert who avoids media obligations via the nba unless he is mandated to do so. He also doesn't have a big shoe deal like the three players mentioned and doesn't seem concerned about acquiring massive fame and wealth like Lebron is addicted to. Kawhi Leonard lead the Toronto Raptors to the franchise and the country of Canada's first ever nba championship in arguably the best one and done season in nba history. Kawhi left the Raptors for his hometown Clippers in free agency despite having endless endorsement offers like a free $5M Toronto Skyline Condo and free food invites from some of Canada's Top Restaurants up the wazhoo. Kawhi chose less money and being close to family in LA over being the biggest sports legend in Canada since Wayne Gretzky.

      @@jaygon9272 lmfao you make it sound like the Warriors weren't stacked without KD they won a title in 2015 with basically the same roster that beat the Cavs that first year. Oh yeah Kyrie Irivng and Kevin Love were hurt and didn't even play those Finals either. There are no asterisks next to titles - Masai Ujiri knew these Warriors were vulnerable based on the 2018 post season when Houston took them to Game 7 in the WCF only to have CP3 get hurt in the deciding game and see the Rockets lose the series. Masai also saw Marc Gasol lead Memphis to a 2-1 lead over the Warriors pre-KD in the 2015 playoffs before Mike Conley got hurt and they lost the series. Masai knew if you built a team that both played suffocating defense and could match up with the Warriors offensively in stretching the floor and hitting 3s then you could push them to the limit. KD getting hurt was a bonus but people who think Warriors would run over Raptors like Portland if they had KD are high. The series likely still would have gone 6 or 7 games and that is before even factoring in Kawhi's next level play through out the 2019 post-season and the fact Raptors still had homecourt especially in a potential Game 7 against the Warriors.

    just with regard to salary... even leaving aside the fact that the NFL has a salary cap for each team (which is a good thing imo, it keeps the teams closer to each other in levels of talent), there are fewer players on each team in the NBA than the other two leagues. in addition, because of the way basketball works on the court the best players in the NBA contribute much, much more to the success/failure of their teams than the other players, so it's natural that teams value them more, so there's a much, much bigger gap between how much the best players make compared to the average. this isn't the case in any other major pro sport in the US. so sure, star NFL players, especially quarterbacks, make a lot more money than others, but it's not as big a difference as the NBA because each individual is simply less important to the team's success.
