In this video, we’re going to talk about constipation and fiber.
Constipation is not just a symptom of a lack of fiber. Constipation is the result of incomplete digestion anywhere in the digestion tract.
This could be due to a lack of:
• Stomach acid - Which breaks down protein
• Bile - Which breaks down fats
• Enzymes - Which breaks down all nutrients
• Gut microbes - Which breaks down fiber and other nutrients
If you have constipation, it could be that you need more stomach acidity, bile, enzymes, or probiotics.
16% of Americans have constipation, and 30% of adults over 60 have constipation.
It’s important to look at the entire digestive process if you have constipation. The answer usually isn’t as simple as adding more fiber. You have to look at your digestion as a whole.
Constipation causes and solutions:
• Antibiotics - Probiotics
• Antacids - Re-acidify the stomach with ACV or betaine hydrochloride
• Medications - Talk with your doctor about alternatives
• Processed foods - Consume raw foods with more enzymes
• Low fiber - More vegetables
• Low electrolytes - More vegetables
• High carbs - Keto and benfotiamine
• Overeating - Intermittent fasting
• Stress - Lower your stress levels with nutrition and relaxation
In general, these things are great for supporting digestion:
• Fermented foods
• Vegetables
• Increasing fat intake
• Lower your carbs
• Intermittent fasting

@@Drberg If you don't have a gallbladder could that lead to too much bile and if so what can you do about it?
Real insight on understanding digestion and constipation, something no doctor of mines has ever explained properly to me. I had to learn it from a CZcams video, is shameful. Dr Berg is for the people, and his legacy is a gift to us.
The doctor I tried only said that don't impress me much. After that i gave up with medical.
Me too. I have had to be my own detective.
They don’t know that’s why
I have never been constipated and that is even when I've had to take pain medication in the past. My sister on the other hand, has always had the opposite problem. A couple months ago she was real sick for a couple of months throwing up throwing up. I kept telling her to go to the doctor finally, one night she felt so ill she thought she was dying. She called the ambulance got to the hospital and they started running tests on her. Well she had a blocked colon and her sugar was 538. Needless to say, she was in the hospital for about 2 weeks and as a part of doing all this work, up they found a mass on the head of her pancreas. So, I do believe what you're saying about constipation not being a disease in itself but being part of whatever is going on in your body. I believe that because of this mass on the head of the pancreas, caused her sugar to go up and caused her bowel blockage. Now on this coming Monday she has to have surgery to take out the cancer. Fortunately, because of this blockage they found it early and as far as they can see, it has not spread anywhere else. Which is is extremely unusual for this type of cancer. Everybody has to listen to what their body is telling them. And if you know what to look for then you can take care of the problem. So I'm glad I did listen to this video. Thank you.
@@violettfem5093 thank you violet, we appreciate all prayers. And I do like your name Violet fern. Very lovely.

Thank you all for your concern and your prayers. And to the doctor who introduced me to this diet and even though I've had problems with the diet. Initially I lost weight on the program. I have so many health problems myself that I do believe I gain weight from the medicine I take. I believe mine has to do with hormones too. But bless you all for thinking of my sister.. I'm crying right now as I send this message to you all who have given me a thumbs up or replied. . It's been more devastating to me than anything else that I've had to deal with with my own health. My sister's diagnosis has really devastated me.. She is so scared because she has had one surgery in her life and it's when she was seven. I've had six surgeries on each of my knees and my gallbladder removed two c-sections spinal fusion, So you see, if I could do it for her I would. God bless you all.
I was researching this topic and you've just uploaded this. You are a saint, sir.

Thank you for your persevering work. Information from some of your past videos helped me understand that a crisis about 8 days ago was self-induced low potassium. A quick, temporary correction of a couple of days of potassium gluconate supplementation, plus long-term revised nutrition to improve potassium and other electrolyte levels, more consistent hydration, and finally cutting sugar completely, saved me from a visit to critical care or a hospital, and as of yesterday has me completely back on track. Thank you! This is the most helpful advice and information I've ever received from the internet community. Ever. It's precise and concise. I have nothing but respect for this man when it comes to patient care...typically missing in modern medicine 'dispensers'. I know believe most GPs are 'receptionists' for a huge medical cartel, they know only how to direct human bodies to pharmaceuticals, specialists and surgeons. In the olden days, the average GP knew and understood even the patients home life and current stress levels and, thus, could better understand symptoms, and could critically assess their patients more effectively prior to calling in specialists or recommending surgery or pharma meds. Today? A GP barely recognizes a patient in the street...they either don't know them as humans or they aren't just aren't interested,

Another great video, doc. I'll be doing a 7 day fast soon as I know my body needs it. Despite being on a OMAD program I still feel a bit constipated, although eating less has made a massive positive difference. Also, I am glad you mentioned the nervous system. Many of probably don't realize that we are stuck in survival/sympathetic mode, and have simply adapted to living this way. It is however the state of dis-ease, should we remain in this state for too long. I am currently working more with my vagus nerve by way of emotional-thought work, as well as acupressure, qi-gong, yoga and generally getting my body feeling that it is safe and secure and can relax and be at-ease. Thanks, Dr. Berg!!

@@weshendrikx9754 I have not, but I will have a look for sure, thanks. It's going very well actually. Rob H. - I loved that he mentioned the parasympathetic information too. I'm learning the relax state of mind myself. I have faith in Jesus. So then I could take the love, deliverance and promises He has for us to calm myself. I then had peace and I focused that into my body to heal from abuse, I am now out of. I was trained to tense my body when I wasn't being treated right. I didn't realize how important the parasympathetic nervous system is and what chronic stress can do to us. So now I am retraining myself to consciously relax my stomach and bowels. Getting relief now. I know I had turned off, unknowingly, my digestive processes. Thank God I know now! Jesus is good and helps us with this information. The one who created Quantum Theory too. Love it! I agree with you, great video.

I used to eat horribly as a child by school food and Indian commodities. I was always constipated and never told anyone. I would go several days without a BM and even then it was not a comfortable thing or even match the amount of food I took in. This continued into my early adult years. I went to the doctor and er so many times in my early 20s with horrible pain in my stomach that radiated to my back and down my legs. The doctors would just send me home with pain meds because they didn't know why but they also didn't do any tests at all! Finally one doctor did an xray which shown constipation. She told me to eat activia, fiber bars, and stay away from bananas. Still to this day that makes zero sense. They referred me because I told them I had bloody stools all the time and did a colonoscopy which showed nothing. But at least my bowels were cleared out from the laxatives! So I began to just pray about it and one time I seen a picture of a banana on pinterest and it said 5 things you should eat. Now why would the doctor and pinterest both tell me to stay away from bananas lol. (I grew up in Hawaii the the first 2years of my life, mangoes and bananas all day everyday and for sure wasn't constipated according to my parents!) So I clicked on the pinterest photo and it wasn't telling me not to eat bananas, it was saying do not eat GMOs, processed food, pop, processed sugars, etc. So I switched immediately to eating grains, fruits, vegetables, organic, local, foraging, hunting wild game and local fishing. Just back to eating what I ate before I was fed government food. I no longer have any issues! It's videos like this one that have helped me the past 8 years, not fiber bars! Which btw cause horrible gas and you still won't have a BM! I even enjoy eating bananas!

I just went through this! I am a little angry because medical doctors are mistreating their patients by not getting to the root cause. I started to talk about the history of my constipation and he cut me off!
This is true, but it's also the patient's responsibility to not be sick unnecessarily due to their own negligence. There's enough blame to go around, but it's up to patients to take responsibility and then doctors will be forced to do better.

Going from OMAD to eating about 4 meals in a 8-10 hour window really helped my digestion, aswell as my muscle protein synthesis. I really love fasting though and when my bile production and metabolism have adapted I will continue IF.
Did you have constipation? And are you on keto?
@@hey956 Yes and yes. I tried lowering fat, taking ox bile etc. Now when I eat at more times per day I get way less bloated, way less undigested parts in the stool and all. I'm gonna keep doing this for a while.
I don’t know man since I switch my normal traditional healthy diet to IF, I’m definitely more bloated and constipated. Maybe lack of bile.
@@TheFBM2011 Extend your eating window, eat more frequent and more fatty (but not too fatty so it floats). That fixed my indigestion and lack of bile.
Aswell as Dandelion root (love that one) and some Ox bile.
Of course in the future I will start reintroducing fasting, because I love that. But I'm not sure if I can handle it now. I got pretty cold at times too, so I suspect I might have hypothyroid.
You are a really good teacher too.I wish you were my teacher when i was studying Nursing.❤️
You are very intelligent and humble. You and your dear wife are full of class. I appreciate your hard work and sharing with all of us.
I am grateful for this. Your work is so helpful. Reducing stress helps. So too, for me, is to not eat while I'm stressed. Perhaps some stress, like conflicting personalities, can't be avoided. You can't pick your family, you need your job, and neighbors aren't easy to change. But, you don't have to eat. Bile salts are essential, and, lots of leafy greens, as fresh as you can find them. The only canned vegetables I will eat is green beans, because they're the only vegetable you can get in a can that hasn't had it's skin removed, and half the texture of lightly steamed carrots is the contrast between the tougher skin and the softer flesh. It's really sad that people only eat the equivalent of a can of vegetables each day.

I never had constipation when I used to eat 3-4 times a day. But when I started fasting/keto and eating once a day I got constipation since there was not much waste created and nothing triggered bowel movements, especially if you fast for 24 hours or more.
So your saying intermittent fasting caused constipation?
Awesome info Doc!!
Thank you!
Thank you Dr. Berg you were sent again to answer my question, how wonderful you are, stay blessed.
Glad to help!
This might be the most helpful video I've ever seen about the digestive system. Thank you Dr Berg, as a person who allowed the mutilation of the gallbladder without it being necessary, I have found this video very interesting since after that surgery I've been dealing with episodes of constipation - diarrhea - anxiety - depression - fear for 8 yrs. The doctors ruined my life but I'm following your tips and other functional doctors' tips and it looks like I'm getting better. I will NEVER EVER trust my health to conventional, ignorant, arrogant, stupid doctors... Much less after seeing SO MANY pseudo medical doctors recommending experimental shots even to the kids.
That's awful but glad to hear you're gradually feeling better!
Have you tried doing a parasite cleanse? I don't have a gallbladder either and was constipated also until I started doing parasite cleanses for a few months
Agree!♥️
@@bruinrosehow do you do it?
If you had horrible pain already your doctor had no other choice.
My father's did not take his gallbladder on time knowing he had a big stone and my father almost died of pancreatitis.
My sister had to go ER during covid because of her gallbladder and was lucky that she didn't die, doctors where not doing gallbladder surgeries and thank God they didn't say she had COVID and kept her in.
I have seen other Dr. Berg videos on constipation...this is the first time I actually remember hearing the 36 hours...but still no time length of time that constitutes constipation...or what is considered too long...that's what I want to know. I made it to OMAD and I don't go as often as I used to...but how often should I go eating one meal a day? I eat what my body needs so there can't be that much left over for waste (so I think)...so not going that often seems to make sense...but is there a constipation factor?
Awesome video. Great information
Thanks
I'm glad you liked this post.
FANTASTIC! THANKS SO MUCH!!
Was not ready for 4:21 while eating breakfast
Constipation also occurs when you are too stressed or emotionally bombarded. The way we feel has a serious impact on how our stomach functions and overall our entire digestive system. For instance, if you are emotionally tense you end up either having constipation or bloated.
So true!
I never had the problem of constipation until 2020, when I got super depressed and emotionally exhausted. I have been struggling with constipation ever since, even after the initial trauma was over. I've tried so many things to get rid of it, but nothing has worked to get me regular.
@@nebulaone908 Hi! So do you mean to tell that your constipation didn't go away since 2020?
Please take care!
