- Blackstar now offers a range of THREE amps in pedal form and the Amped 3 is the heaviest of them all, but that isn't all that it can do.

Just want to thank you man, your content is actually so helpful... and always amazing production as well!
Blackstar is a company of great ideas and 50/50 execution. They have some great stuff hindered by their bad stuff. People hear the bad stuff and think ''ow, its because its a black star''. If they just removed the bad features and delivered a more consistent good sounding platform, it sounds killer. Played the St James, the HTs, and they sound killer. My fly 3 is still my favorite practice amp, just because of the simplicity, turn it in, play, have fun. No apps, no extras, no time wasting before you can find a nice sound.
And then they release a lot of convoluted products and half baked features that sound bad. People dont know how to set them - or they are just not good features - and they sound bad. And then blackstar get the bad rep for bad gear, when, honestly, remove the unnecessary things and their products are great at what they are designed to do, but too feature packed for their own good...
Take that cab sim away, use the memory for patches. There you go, you remove the biggest complain about the unit and add the feature thats useful and missing from the unit, using the same memory space.
Where would you rate the Amped 3? Good or not so good?
@@mikejelinek1413 I only played it in a store and it does sound damn good for me, but the price point might be a deciding factor (600$ here). The sounds coming from the unit are pretty good and it does offer a lot of tonal flexibility, also being very convenient to carry around.
Lets just say that 600 euro in ireland is a lot of cash and puts it basically at the same price as a tiny terror head or a EVH 5150 III LB head, the Amped 3 is a full amp, but the Amped 3 is louder than the TT or the EVH LB and offer more features like direct out options, IRs and other things valve amps dont. On the other hand, its not a valve amp (it replicates valve behaviour in a very similar way though), so not using valves might be a pro or a con depending on your tastes.
All in all, I'd say it is a pretty good deal if you like the way it sounds. It is a full amp, with speaker out, loop section, IR loader and presets that is sturdy enough for you to throw it in your backpack and go for gigs without worrying about your amp valves. If thats what you're looking for, then it is absolutely good.
I have one. First modeller I can use live without creating special live patches. Cuts through with my band. Light. With my single 12 inch birch cab with Celestion Neo V30 loaded, and my Helix Effects pedal, I have the gig worthy light rig I have been looking for for 18 months. Very happy indeed. It was recommended to me by my tube loving luthier, who switched to this for his gigs. He was right. Thanks Simon😊
Thank you for doing this video i had been trying to decide between the 2 and 3 for a while this video made me realise the 3 was the only decision
Love Blackstar, been using their gear since 2010. At the time, their included IR / Emulated Out was super convenient for starting out with home recording or practicing at night. But it has always been super wooly and muddled - and 13 years later, that's still the case.
I bought one on Saturday.
Primarily it’ll be used for recording and headphone practice.
30 mins in Cab Rig and I had 3 great options (the factory presets aren’t brilliant it has to be said).
Out of the box the whole package needs work and I know we all demand instant gratification these days but with a bit of time and patience I have it sounding mighty.
Great, thorough demo/review. HP does it again! The little details that could have been better on it all make sense, regardless of how important they might be to different players.
Thanks for honest review I was about to buy it just for the DI recording.
I watched you vids on Hughes & Kettner stomp box & the amped 2 , going with stomp box that I can use with my effects with presets ,then next get the amped 2 cause it fits my style, Sweetwater & Thomann have to love you for the business you have brought them ,you also hooked me on h&k stuff
I’ve bought one. I love it. I think these Amped products are aimed at lower tech older players. I’m 54, this reminds me of the Sansamp Tri AC which I gigged and made an album with, but with a power amp built in. My only criticism is the reverb should be on the preset and it needs a footswitchable FX loop with delay trails.
That muscle shirt is hilarious! Glad the model shaved before the photoshoot!
Hey Henning nice piece of gear but there are things that u can forget! would be huge learning curve for my old brain.Heritage H150 what a beautiful guitar 🎸 thanks for the indepth video.
Marshall has been calling it od1 and od 2 for ages (jmp 1 had it) and Blackstar came from Marshall, so it makes sense to me also ADA MP-1 had those labels so its been common for almost 40 years nearly as long as the tubescreamer. Maybe a lead with od1 and od2 makes more sense.
Thanks… that makes sense now!
Soldano calls the high gain channel "Overdrive" as well.
IMHO it's better than "lead" .. we don't just use that channel for leads, that naming never made sense to me.
What do you suggest amping up another modeler? I’m thinking of getting a Boss ME 90 but need to find a power amp pedal for it that fit in normal luggage and is load gigging and use would use another modeler for effects.Great show like always 😅
With you honest opinion (like always) I’m about to buy a pedal amp pedal wouldn’t amped II be a better option? And can any of these Blackstars push a passive guitar amp or isn’t better with a stronger wattage Seymour pedal ?
Hey, I am loving your Songs so much. Are you planing a Spotify playlist only with your songs?
They are mostly unreleased
I purchased one of these and I actually love the thing. I am not using it's built in IR stuff though, going directly to a real cab. I may be a little old, to be blunt the ir stuff on there wasn't even on my radar when I bought it so the fact that it s*cks isn't a deal breaker. the fact that it sounds good through a cab and isn't 70lbs like my tube amp head is, it's all a win. I do hope they make fixes to the things you mentioned because it would be nice, but honestly the only reason I would use it is if I'm just jamming on my computer at which point I'd just use my other amp sims and ir's, wouldn't use this at all.
What would you compare it with sound-wise through a cabinet? That's what I'm looking to do. You get 15 minutes between bands these days at the clubs. I'm looking for the best sound and quickest setup.
22:56 nice playing dude! Lovely
Agree with all your points made in first 10-11 minutes. I Think about operation with this unit the same way you do. 🤨
Pre (before) boost > more gain
Post (after) boost > more volume
When you're in Manual mode the little white LED in the top left stays illuminated, so there's a visual indicator
Only until you hit the knob’s saved setting
As far as an electric clean is concerned, I would be using the crunch channel with the guitar volume backed off. That's what sounds like a clean to me.
Great review Henning, so just a question how does this stacks up to the Bluguitar Iridium? Both are almost at the same price range
the idea behind them is very different.... one is digital, one is analog.
Pricing is not quite the same either... maybe check out videos for both of them.
I like your playing too.
: )
Hi there. I would use this live in a predominantly blues band. I have an 80 watt cab and a 50 watt cab, both 16 ohms. Can I safely use either (or both by linking them up) using the 100 watt setting on the Amped? Also, can I set the three channels to get progressively louder from clean to crunch to overdrive or will I have to use the volume control manually to do this? I'd be keeping the gain relatively low as we don't play metal, and we don't play that loud, so I wuold probably find the 20 watt sufficient. By the way, nice honest review, and I like your top!
Thanks for your question, that's one of my worries: the lack of independent volume knobs for each channel
It has 2 power outputs, 8 and 16 ohms, you can use one or the other but not both. So in your scenario, you could run both cabs in parallel on the 8 ohm output assuming one of cabs has a second jack to jumper them together. If not, you can get a Palmer passive cabinet merger and connect them in parallel that way.
On the volume knobs, you can set the channel volume of the channel presets independent of each other and the master volume. Hope that helps.
What do you like better the Blackstar Ampped 3 or The Amp 1 Iridium?
Does the master volume affect the line out?
I wish you could select the modes of the channel by pressing a second time the same switch like in the HT series amps, then would have 6 channels plus the boost on each would be like 9 channels.
I wonder if the cab rig has improved a year later
The 3 is $599 at Sweetwater ,I like the 2 much better for my stile music , but no presets at all is a real downer , but the want to need may get the best of me then watch ‘em come out with a red one with presets
Not saving the reverb-settings may prevent me from wanting this unit. Thanks for your insight. I just wrote an email to Blackstar and asked if they think about fixing this issue with an firmware-update. For indepth-reviews you became one of my favourite sources. and I finally subscribed to your channel. Liebe Grüße aus dem Saarland.
Daaaaaanke!
Is the 100 watts (transistor) enough to drive a 212 cabinet on stage for live events ?
More than enough
I can’t see how you’d need to switch between patch and manual while gigging. I’d be in one mode and stick to it.
So that's a Soldano behind you? An SLO Super Lead Overdrive. Basically SLO / 5150.
When you see clean crunch and over drive in that order it's a reference to the SLO / 5150 concept.
Blackstar gets a bad rap but I love the tones!
You’re killing it on this clip! Your chops are stupid awesome! Your tones are seriously rad!
*EDIT*
The negative is that their app, cab sims stuff is way back to Line 6 stuff. I agree with your thoughts on this…strip it down & just give us the amp! Run a direct out to an external ir loader.
Based on your assessment Henning, it looks like Blackstar released a beta product rather than the production version. Sad because I ordered one. Hopefully they can fix it with an update.
They do seem to rush stuff out. Amped 1, Amped 2, Amped 3.... ?!?! I bought one of the Dept 10 pedals and it was a nighmare of inconsistencies. Email exchanges with Blackstar got me nowhere - it was a bit like "....well, that's the way it works.." Really? So I got rid of it.
when you say "go direct" do you mean record through the USB port directly into a USB port on your computer?
I usually mean the XLR out
For that price it should come with a propper cab sim or IR loader.
For about the same price I can run a NUX Amp Academy to a Pedal Baby and also go to front of house with the IR’s I choose to load for my channels, besides also being able to control the DI volume on it’s own (avoid the mixer channel from clipping with zero gain) and setting DI high+low cut directly from the box.
Actually got two of those 200 Euro NUX pedals now, because the amp models and DI just do their work.
Short comming are the reverbs, not the best but if any I use only a tiny amount of reverb anyway.
Surely they can add 3rd party IR loading in an update?
you would hope so!
Doesn't the smaller one have more power amp choices?
It does
Does the power switch 1-20-100 watt work from the XLR out?
It doesn’t affect the xlr out
Heritage for the win!
Im Manual-Mode leuchtet eine weiße LED neben dem Gain-Pot.
Nice
This'll teach 'em! Next time, they should send you the prototype before going to production!
That’s what I said!
No mute...just use a cable with a built-in kill switch. How hard is that?
REALLY hard!
@@EytschPi42 HAHA! Great video...VERY serious question as I build a metal rig over here. Does the AMPED 3 suffer in the high-end like essentially every other solid state amp? Is it harsh and fizzy in the highs? I'l be running it through a Mesa 2X12 with Vintage 30s. Would you say it's better than the BluAm Amp 1 Iridium? THX!
Exactly👍What a fkn stupid statement!
What brand of guitar is that red one
Mayones
I know y’all are good people by the way y’all love animals
Is it digital modelling or analog solid state?
Modeling
I apologise for keep focusing on your handsome look under those soft and beautiful lighting and 2160p resolution ~😂
Kann der denn auch ambientartige Cleans?
Ich sag mal ja
Got my feet wet with Blackstar but just couldn't gel. It's like they never found their own voicing. Amp wise. Just always kind of sounded middle of the road quality of tone. Eh. Love the videos and the completely unbiased reviews. Awesome playing as always.
The more new products that come out, the more I realize that the Hughes & Kettner Grandmiester series is still the best live option out there for gigging.
Another product that really just needs an IR loader..
Heritage are a great guitar builder ie Gibson.
The ISP knob is and always has been useless. It's a great way make a meh sound into a really bad sound.
Pee pee poo poo
Hi Henning, any chance you're planning to review the new Laney Iron Heart pedal amp?
Depends on Laney!
Oh man, I would love that loudpedal review. I was thinking of just chucking a board together with my FM9 and the Laney ironheart loudpedal to a cab and be right good to go.i wonder?? Btw, I think I may have said it before but, Henning, you're the best!!
Seltsam, dass gerade in einem stark umkämpften Bereich immer noch so halbgare Produkte erscheinen.
Peace ✌️ bro 😎
High Gain players… We don’t need no tuner to play out of tune 😎 🦇 🖤
They really need to add IR Loading feature into the Cab Rig Software in future updates. That will change a lot of things i believe.
They should have called it the death star
That’s someone else’s ®️©️. Muhahaha
I saw both già review and the One for the amped2 , given that i'll use It mostly home , connected to a cab , which One sounds "Better" in your opinion?
Cool product but those "little things" add up to me and would drive me nuts.
I am a Blackstar fan but the IR settings are disappointing, like you said. I just wish Blackstar would do a little consulting, with people like you, on a prototype pedal to ensure they are creating a useable product that most, if not all, can use. As you said, connecting it to an actual cab it's sounds great. But, maybe they can create one without the IR and reduce the cost.
This has all I need/want to to play at home and jam at the studio with the same tone......However, the CabRig is as you said not good.....(I had a Blackstar amp with CabRig for quite a while, so I know how bad it is...)
Are there any alternatives to this unit out there?
Cheers
Amp1 bluguitar
My new mantra: Wersemiutbuttn? 🙃
Haaaaa that took me a while to get
I really appreciate that they worked on a new speaker sim .. that said: no IRs = no go.
IRs are one of the few digital components of guitar tone that are transferable between nearly all digital units. I have a few I like that are part of "my recorded tone", let me just use those.
Sounds like an amp to me....through the cab
Super demo. I've just ordered a BluGuitar amp1...
Just. NOISE
Hi, i own a hughes and kettner black soirit 200, and im thinking about change it for the amoed 3, do you think its an error???
It really depends on what you need it for and what you play… I can’t answer that for you
I got one.
It sounds pretty good, but I don’t think it has enough volume.
I’ve other 100watt SS gadgets that push way more air.
I dont know why they kept the isf bottom if you can select the type of valve you want.
Man the quality of the direct/speaker simulated output makes me sad. I think Blackstar would have done themselves a big favor by just cooperating with Two Notes instead of trying to reinvent the wheel.
haha, not Synergy?
Tomorrow
Could have been great but it misses the tuner and a gate to be a real portable solution.
It offers too many things that add to the price and are not Pro sounding.
.The Laney Lionheart Foundry Series IRF Loud pedal is a basic 60 watts RMS 2 channel amp that sounds easily as good as any of the Blackstar amps and is $300.00 USD and it's half the size. You put it on your pedal board and verbs, drives etc are all great because you buy what you like and perhaps from several different brands. Everything in one is for the Boss Kanata guys. Laney has taken a pro approach. The amp is Pro and not filled with ameteur sounding extras that double the price.
We cannot load our own IRs? Oh boy.....If this is the case, it s already a total no go....
Sadly you can’t load IRs
@@EytschPi42 Thanks for the clarification . That s really bad, then. The cheaper H&K Ampmans do what I would expect from such a thingie ;)....And that s why I like them. I either use real tube amps with captor X or the ampmans for lazy days. Take care and keep up the excellent work mate ;) Love your channel ;)❤
you lost me at modeller
Flamp 3 sounds great as an amp but get your own speaker sim to DI to FOH or recording.
Ps you have some Pooh on your shirt
Beach dogs FTW
P.P.S… where did you get that pic of my torso for the thumbnail?
DOH! your tuner pedal is the mute button. this thing is geared towards being an amp. you want fx, get Amped 2. my 2 euro cents. and stop fiddling, fiddling, fiddling, Henning XD
Why wouldn’t they just have an option to put in an ir? I understand that a cab sim might be able to do more than an ir technically… but this problem is already solved.
This sounds thin and not so natural
Never met a single Blackstar I actually liked.
Series one are great amps. The rest are so-so
No products at all ?
@@alexdenton6586 nope
@@shreder75 even modeling ?
Those aren't different tubes. Those are just different EQ profiles trying to perpetuate the tube tone myth! Tubes don't change anything but how loud it gets.
And where do you get this knowledge from?
This channel sucks😂😂
Amped 2 effects and tuner and amped 3 preamp is winning combination!!
Individually they are neither cat nor mouse🤷
You're gonna need a tuner. Most tuners have a Mute function.😊
These simple devices should be analog/ solid state anyway (aside from the power section) IMHO. Why digital?
Modeling a tube amp. That's OK you can have it. I will stay with my Fender Blues Junior a real Tube amp. With real spring Reverb.Enough said.
