      Yes the there a backlog at the Home Affairs, they will probably resolve it soon

    So if one applied for the Spousal visa, does it mean you'll have to stay in South Africa waiting for an anwser?

      You can stay or leave. They allow you to stay.

      And since you may have to wait 7 years plus for the permanent application, it may be better to work overseas and visit periodically, making sure to renew your temporary permit every two years (which at present may take over a year to be issued due to horrific backlogs).
      You also can't work on the temporary permit, without a special endorsement.
