Driving the incredible Ferrari 250 SWB Revival by GTO Engineering

  • I was recently invited to visit GTO Engineering, a British Ferrari specialist that refurbishes classic Ferraris, but also builds new examples. The car driven here, known as the 250 SWB Revival, is a so-called tool-room copy of the original 250 Short Wheelbase - meaning it's exactly like the original in all the ways that matter (beautiful, isn't it?) but offers modern reliability, and options like a larger Colombo V12 engine, upgraded gearbox and brakes, USB charging for your phone, and even air conditioning.
Or, GTO Engineering can build your 250 SWB Revival as a stripped-out racer, complete with roll cage, fire extinguisher and racing gearbox. The Revival is built almost entirely from scratch, using original Ferrari drawings, then adopts the identity of a donor vehicle, usually of a similar vintage but which is no longer roadworthy.
I had a few hours with this magnificent car, on what may have been the hottest day of the year (I apologise for my appearance). Also, I promise I'm not harassing the Golf R ahead - that's the camera car and my navigation/guidance system.
Filming this was all a bit rushed and with just a couple of GoPros, so the quality isn't all that. Nevertheless, I wanted to share a portion of this life-affirming drive, and record THAT V12 soundtrack.
The still photography was provided by the excellent Mark Riccioni. You can find his Instagram here: / mark_scenemedia and his website and online shop here: markriccioni.co...

250 SWB is the most beautiful automobile ever made. It's styling is austere and restrained, yet impossibly aggressive and powerful. It reminds me of a large jungle cat in mid pounce. I want one of these recreations so I can drive the wheels off of it every day.

Back in 1970 when I was 16 I had the pleasure to have in my possession a 1959 250 gt for the weekend. The owner wanted me to install a battery and fan belt. I drove it out to Hollywood Ferrari then to the gas station I worked at. It’s one of my sweetest memories. The owner was a top notch guy. It’s a bit of a long story how a 16 year old kid was trusted with a car like this. Like I said the owner was a hell of a guy.

You’re wondering if cars like this should be made? ARE YOU MAD? Are you insane? OF COURSE they should make these cars...and many others! It’s an experience, driving something like that, which cannot be replicated any other way. Modern cars have lost the plot almost entirely. And then you started babbling on about being embarrassed that you like cars because ..blah, blah blah....lost me entirely.

Dont feel guilty about your love of cars, they allow you to turn a trip into an adventure.
After work one night when we were exhausted from closing after a busy shift, two coworkers asked me for a ride home. We started joking about work and the stuff we would rather do. Kathy said as soon as she falls asleep she was going to dream about being on a beach relaxing to the sound of the waves coming in. That turned into a road trip to the Connecticut shore. Three teenagers in fast food uniforms sleeping on the beach and waking up at sunrise by a slobbering dog too willing to lick people.
When we meet up now all of these years later, the memory of that trip always comes up. I still have the Volvo 1800 S that got us there and back, and they always ask about it.
In the beginning of the last century, Mr Rockefeller lobbied to have the worlds second most plentiful resource called a fossil fuel. The reason? To make it sound rare and limited to be able to sell it at a reasonable profit. Should we be enviromentally conscious? Of course, but we should also be aware of scams like climate change that are designed by people like Mr Rockefeller to make money off of us.
In the 1970's it was global cooling, the 1990's global warming. Temps didnt keep going up and it morphed into climate change. Why?
    Follow the money.
