I run a Giant Bluefin Tuna boat in Massachusetts. We do the EXACT same thing with our lines (with much larger balloons that do not come off).
A little late to the table, but what a gem of an idea. I have just rekindled my fishing journey and do not have as much kit as I need, and I am buying it all again, and as such I am so eager to get out on the river as soon as possible (within the next few days) and until some new kit arrives I was wondering how or what to use, and now I have a quick bite indicator to use tomorrow on my fishing trip.
That is genius :) I was just looking for good a idea for home made indicators and this idea is so clever. What makes it even more special is the fact I bought my son 500 small water balloons the other day ! Great tip...subscribing :)

You using this on a floating line can i use it on a french leader and how long is your tippet
Leader 10ft, tippet under the balloon was about 30inch due to shallow water, did it this way as I can then remove the balloon and change the fly to a streamer or dry. Yes easy to put on a french leader as I have done that before. Regards MD

Does this also work if you want to fish 3 or 4 meters deep? Thank you!!
If the water is slack and not running fast it should work fine that's if you have weighted flies, but if I wanted my fly down that deep on a river I would fish from an up flow position.
