Yes, the Kankers are the villains. They aren’t meant to be sympathetic. The problem, however, is that THEY ALWAYS WIN. They’re hate sinks, but The Eds only got one over on them ONCE, and that was completely reversed by the episodes end.
Hell, sometimes they’re just a Diablous Ex Machina to ruin the Eds’ victory in an episode they otherwise weren’t even a part of.

Honestly I think the Kankers kinda get some inspiration to treat the Eds the way they do from their mom. I know there’s a few episodes where they talk about their mom and they talk about the things she’s said to them (like how awful men are or that they always run away from you). Also note that the robes the Eds wore in the first Kanker episode were their dads’ robes and the joke of them having 3 different dads. I think their trope (obviously) was that they were raised by a “trailer trash” mom who couldn’t keep a man so they kinda lead by example by chasing and harassing the Eds because that’s what they think they’re supposed to do in a relationship. Like in that one episode where Double D suggests using reverse psychology against the Kankers and flirting back. They become disgusted and creeped out by the Eds, but when they notice that Eddy was still very scared of them they went right back to chasing and harassing the Eds.
Despite all this, I still think what they do is awful and that doesn’t give them an excuse because they obviously know right from wrong they just choose wrong lol. Anyways thanks for coming to my Ted Talk lmaoooo

Surprised you didn't address the Valentine Day Special where they gave May a love interest, but if you are just doing a quick glance over to their overall characters in the show I can understand. Personally think that is one of the few episodes where they gave anything outside of bully for one of the Kankers. It put on a spotlight for why I still think May is the good one and only redeemable one.
May showed some kindness here and there for Ed outside of vengeful. Sure, she chased him, but it almost made it look like she was following her sisters examples on how to behave.
Like you said, being the parallel to Ed, she is stupid and just follows what her sister thinks.
There was one episode where her hair is messed up, I remember distinctly she was more concern about impressing her 'crush' Ed. So Idk about Marie and Lee, but May might have actually caught some feelings for Ed. Just misguided.
And aforementioned Valentine Episode she gave Ed a valentine and show visual distress that he didn't take it. It didn't seem like she flick a switch on to be mean later, but she actually did care about Ed's opinion.
The other two Kankers are just bully characters with no redeeming qualities however. Funny karma inducing characters, no lie. May will forever be that unredeemed bully to me.

May and Ed are definitely the pair that would work to the absolute best if May got away from her sisters and I think if he gave Marie time away from Lee since the two of them buttheads the most maybe she'd calm down too because there were a couple of moments if I'm remembering right where Marie and double d had a little bit of chemistry almost more like The confident girl awkward shy guy thing instead of a assaulting stalker to their victim in certain episodes almost like he was able to go toe to toe with her but wasn't confident in doing it. I think the romance between May and Edd was pretty believable in the valentine's episode. She showed she's a lot smarter than she leads on, which is what caught Edd's attention. She also appears to be more physically capable than her other two sisters when properly motivated, but she's usually bullied into submission.
There's also an episode where her sisters give her a bad makeover on purpose and she was genuinely upset thinking that big Ed wouldn't like her.
Sure, May engaged in bullying the 3 Eds along with her sisters, but if the show had explored her personality a little more we probably would've found that deep down she wants to be a good kid but has bad influences.

Honestly I agree, the Kankers are the villains, and the point is that they are NOT a romance option for the Eds, the Eds and show make it clear "these are not what the Eds want and nobody is saying they want them" the show is honest about the Kankers being horrible. However my issue with them is when the episode just uses them as Deus Ex Machinas, something to solely exist just to punish the Eds. When it doesn't make sense to do so. They always win and the Eds are always helpless against them.
I think this should apply to Sarah as well, since she basically fits into "They bully you cause they love you" trope, where despite liking Double D has no problems abusing him or treating him like scum. Even revels in seeing him get pummeled. To which most of the time the show seems to forget it entirely, this coupled with her obnoxious yelling and aggressive tone and yeah she's basically just the Kankers minus the rape element. And no, Double D being part of the "scams" doesn't justify the fact that its still abuse.

@@razkable It worked in the Valentine special because they were under the influence of a love arrow caused by an alternate reality Sarah and Jimmy. They weren't in actual love. Plus May was at least more sympathetic there then everywhere else. But generally the show was good at using the Abhorrent Admirer trope to its advantage. Because the Kankers are bad people and the show communicates this. The Eds running away is a clear presentation of "These girls are molesters, you don't want these kind of people falling for you".. The Eds themselves always express how much they don't want it, and none of the other kids say they do either, because they scare anyone with their presence alone. Nobody laughs, but that's because nobody is suppose to laugh BUT them. Audience included.
Really the only issue with the Kankers is when the show uses them as an Ex Machina, something to ONLY show up to give the Eds a bad ending. And the Eds only defense against them is to run away. But if they are related to the plot and show up its basically dark comedy.

Double D decides to use Reverse Psychology on them, by pretending to now return their romantic feelings and thus harass them like they have done to the Eds. It actually almost works, since the Kankers run scared from Ed and Double D flirting with them, but when Eddy can't shake off his fear and flirt too they realize what the Eds are doing and use "Reverse-Reverse Psychology" to lure them into a trap.

Edd and Marie in the show proper wouldn’t ever work given the nature of the series. Even in the finale, while Marie expressed real concern for him, nothing ever indicated Double D ever liked her one bit.
He is a nice guy so if she was going through troubles, he would likely lend a helping hand if he could to comfort her. But Marie (and her sisters) being so sadistic and twisted, along with their very clear enjoyment over how powerless the Ed’s are to stop their advances or torment stops any potential progress dead in its tracks.

What I really like about this show is that everyone is pretty flawed and kind of a bunch of a-holes. The Kankers work so well here because they're like if the Eds turned bad. The show actually acknowledges that they are bad people. Apparently, their mom is also a misandrist who had three husbands in the past, so that explains their antics.
Also, apparently Marie is supposed to be like Double D regarding intelligence, so there's that.
Edit: I had a massive crush on Marie, but I knew that she was a bad person. I only liked her for her looks and voice, but the fact that she was essentially a bully was always clear to me as a kid. That's how you know something is done right. Not saying you can't ship, let's say Double D and Marie together, but let's be honest and say we all know that in the actual show, she isn't supposed to be a good person.
Also, i loved how messed up this show got with its humour. There's even a line in "Once Upon A Ed" where Eddy screams "I'M A MINOR, STOP!" I think this is where my dark humour originated from and it's why I love flawed and morally ambiguous characters. Always Sunny is a good example of this.

One aspect about Sarah that also makes her terrible is her crush on Double D. The Kanker Sisters get a lot of flak from people online, and I don't like them either. But tbh, the Kanker Sisters actually do work with what they are going for. For all intents and purposes, they are G rated Rapists, but the show NEVER portrays their attempts as being 'funny" or "in the right" in fact it was treated the opposite way. The moment they appear onscreen everyone treats them as they should, why would you want to be around a group of rapists who also love lording and abusing people? In a way the show itself is stating that these aren't people you want to be around, actively showcasing that what the Kankers do are wrong and is treated as so awful the Eds would rather face the Kids than them as shown in If it Smells like an Ed! Even with their crush on the Eds, again it not played as funny or in the right, the whole joke with the Kankers is that while they are the ones laughing, you aren't because nobody would find sexual assault or abuse funny other than the ones doing it. The main flaw with the Kankers was when the show used them as Diabolicus Ex Machina people who just exist to force a bad ending on the Eds. Which even gets downplayed.
Really the only time I found the Kankers as polarizing as the internet was their usage in the school seasons, which I DO agree was Seasonal rot, unlike what many fans/critics say. Because in these seasons, not only are they irrelevant, but when they do show up for their main shtick, that aspect about it is played completely straight. The prime example of this is the episode where school is first starting and the Eds are FORCED by the Kankers to say they love them in front of the kids while the kids begin to tease and mock them, almost suggesting that the show thinks it is funny, when the entire point of the Kankers purpose was that nobody found the Kankers funny other than the Kankers themselves, the kids would even run from them. There's also the episode A Town Called Ed where Kevin uses the Kankers to molest the Eds as a way to give them their bad ending, while the kids, again laugh at them.
When it comes to Sarah however her crush on Double D is written in a way to show she has a "good side" and is played as cute. When she regularly abuses Double D as much as she does Ed, and this isn't even a Kevin case where its outright implied if Double D was never associated with Eddy or scams, he would be cool with Double D. No, even in moments where it's just Double D, Sarah just treats him as she would Ed and her excuse about "not going soft" isn't an excuse, it feels like the show would often forget about her crush unless it was relevant for the plot. For example, the episode where Double D needs a shower, how does Sarah treat him? She tells him to wait 3 weeks in a way that comes off as she's lying, then when he becomes frantic beats him with concrete, or the episode where she is sick, while Double D helps her, she spits at him when he tries to help her. And sure, she can put him in his place during moments he deserves it, but her crush on him is just abuse. It is literally the "bully because they love you trope" and in Sarah's case it is portrayed as cute since she giggles and is used to show a "nice" side to her, but just makes her more of an abusive shrew. To me this is why I find Sarah's crush on Double D to be worse than the Kankers because with the Kankers it isn't used as a way to force sympathy or played straight, they are played as wrong and treated as wrong for doing it.

And I especially find it disturbing when people act like the Eds should eventually get together with the Kankers, as if that would in any way shape or form be a positive thing for them.

Have you seen a single person defend how the Kankers acted? Because I certainly haven't; almost anybody with a brain realizes how problematic they are. I don't understand why people have to say "if the genders were reversed!" or "if the races were reversed!" with respect to so much media; it is such a tiring view that doesn't add anything. Just point out how bad it is and don't compare it to something that doesn't exist (even then, shows like Johnny Bravo exist which are very similar to what "wouldn't air").

Something I've noticed that no one else ever seems to bring up is the horrifying implications of the Kankers' home life and how that would affect their development in this direction. Literally, the first episode we see them, we find them living in a trailer, and it's established that each of them has a different father. This shows not only that their mother is unable to maintain a stable marriage, but also carries the very strong implication that she is, in fact, a prostitute, stripper, or other form of sex worker. If anything, her possession of monogrammed bathrobes from her exes suggests she's done work in pornographic films. Worse, their proximity to their mother's unsavory lifestyle opens up the very real possibility that one or more of the sisters might have been molested at some point. But even if we ignore _that_ potential factor, the fact remains that a single sex worker raising three daughters without a stable home life and constant exposure to the seediest aspects of human sexuality cannot be conducive to a child's mental health or understanding of normal, healthy sex/gender relations.
When you take those disturbing factors into account, the Kankers' behavior begins to make a lot more sense. Whatever their interactions with the Eds, be it standard bullying, romantic fawning, or outright sexual harassment, it all stems from them having a dysfunctional frame of reference caused by their poor upbringing, parental neglect, observation/imitation of the many dysfunctional adults in their lives, and potentially their own sexual trauma. The fact that something this complex and dark was worked into a cartoon I watched as a kid blows my mind, and I love it.

    • @Elliandr
      @Elliandr Před 2 lety +67

There is another possible way of interpreting the mother's relationships. Intent as opposed to failure.
Since around the 80s there has been growing financial incentive for poor women to have children with as many different men as possible and to not get married. There are a few reasons for this.
For starters, regardless of economic background, women almost always get custody of children and the child support for each child is higher when it comes from a different father. And this money, being for the care of the child rather than the mother, does not prevent the mother from getting access to Social Services.
If a woman gets married to a single guy and had multiple children with him she wouldn't be able to get help from programs like social security or food stamps because his income would decrease her eligibility. This applies even when a man runs off since they are still married.
As long as they aren't married though she can maintain an active relationship and it won't affect her income.
So maybe their mother is one of these types. Serial monogamist, never gets married on purpose, lives on child support and Social Security, and maybe that's also why these girls are so focused on securing a mate. They know that it's more important to have babies then get married for their own Financial Security. At least according to how their mother lives.
This of course isn't to say that a person needs marriage to have a stable relationship. The fact that over half of all baby boomer marriages ended in divorce and that most Americans today grew up in literally broken homes explains why marriage is not a high priority for many people anymore.

From what I remember of the show, the Kankers *are* giving some humanizing characterizations. From broken homes looking for escapes find their perfect husbands that work as their idealizations, and using the examples from their own lives to base their actions towards the Eds on.
And while they are primarily treated as villains or the antagonists throughout the series, there were sometimes hints at it either being not entirely one sided or that, though reviled, that they were just *kids* as messed up as everyone else if not more so.
Also oddly pushing for the dumbest of the two trios to get together, and a odd love triangle between Marie and Edd and Nazz.

The Eds do seem to like the idea of being the object of the Kankers' affection in their debut episode and there was also the Valentine's special where Edd seems to like May, but I imagine part of the issue is that the Kankers come on too strong because of their terrible household. It's implied that their mother has had each of them with three different men, all of whom have run off, and I suppose the Kankers see that as the normal for a relationship. It's why they get freaked out in the episode where the Eds actually start showing them affection and interest.

I feel with kid centred shows, creators hold a responsibility. And even when abusive/toxic characters are portrayed as a joke there needs to be a clear or distinguishing line or message that those people are not okay. Because not all kids can make the connection. Especially with some tropes “they bully you because they like you” some cartoons like to do. So even when you make clear jokes you are not quite clear from your responsibility. I’d love to see your take or other comments, because especially in lgbt shows super toxic relationships are held in high esteem. I'm honestly glad my intuition helped me out and I had 2010s show to build my childhood.

But when at least one of her sisters is there she cranks it up to match their level of evil. The Christmas special especially shows how naive and less evil she is, and that her behavior is more so just something that cam from her environment, not trying to call her good at heart just that she's probably the only one that actually benefit from some counseling or therapy if a redemption arch ever happend for her. I feel Marie is alot like Double D in the sense that she just doesnt seem as bad as her sisters. Like if they are all supposed to be reflections of the Eds then i think (logically speaking) that makes Marie the most acceptable or maybe the one that could improve the most. Same as how in some episodes of the show Double D is the one out of the three to be accepted sometimes by the other kids in the cul-de-sac.

Marie isn't anything like Double D though. You see in the show that Double D cares but Marie was never painted in a light of outside of malicious and vengeful. I never got why people stood to stand by her to this day. She is an empty slate bully character that doesn't have any redeeming qualities. If you said MAY I could understand, but Marie. Marie would forever be a bully character that people only like for her outside punk image.
Which I can understand. Who doesn't like a punk girl aesthetics? But call a spade a spade. Don't pretend she something she ain't. You want a bully character that is sweet? Look at May. She actually has redeeming qualities that the show provides.

They always seemed like the type of kids that would live down the gravel path from me and because our mothers would have been gossip buddies (and with a lack of anyone over the age of 5 to hang out with) me and my two younger siblings would have been obligatory friends with the Kankers.
Which I get sounds shitty with how they act in the show but despite that I always remember having genuinely good memories with those kids honestly, not that the sisters are good in any sense lol

I mean it's okay villain to lose, but to make it interesting let them win from time to time so that the people know why they're the Villains in the first place or key word threat to the main cast on why they were chosen. Other than that though I can see both sides of the argument but honestly they did it well enough that again you could argue they just wanna mess the ed's up mentally or just genuinely "showing affection in their own way" which I guess good job on the writers?

This is not healthy to expose kids to, learning consent is such a important part on a kids development as they grow up, and the fact that many cartoons disregarded such a important thing with their pairings dynamics is so messed up, but at least like you said, this show know the sisters's behaviors are bad.

On the topic of this kind of writing, I still think Helga was the only character to pull it off decently, because we actually *see* her home life and we get a better understanding of where she's coming from.
Plus she does have relationships outside of her crush on Arnold. She has friends and over the course of the series she gets episodes focused on her and her troubled relationship with her family, particularly her near-perfect sister Olga.

  • @connorrivers995
    @connorrivers995 Před rokem +30

I think the reason Marie got so popular (besides the fact that most animation fans love punk/goth/emo/tomboy girls) is because she hit the sweet spot of being underdeveloped enough for fanfiction writers to do interesting things with her without seeming out of character and being developed enough to not be boring. With Lee being the face of the Kankers and May being the most innocent, they had a lot of screen time given to them compared to Marie (the plot of the valentine's special kicks off because May wants to show Ed romantic interest that doesn't involve physical harassment by giving him a valentine's day card, showing that she does have a crush on him), who's only real character moment outside of being part of the Kankers and being the one most willing to show backtalk to Lee was when she destroyed a speaker at the school dance in a fit of jealousy when she saw Double-D dancing with Nazz. As such we saw that Lee is a manipulative and sadistic monster who takes joy out of everyone's suffering, not just Eddy's, and that May is Ed but just a bit brighter and not as funny. Marie kind of became the most popular female in the show by default because outside of Nazz (who's personality is nice girl. She has her stern moments, but she doesn't drive any of the plots she's in, isn't particularly funny and is mainly used as eye candy. Not many fans like that kind of personality in most works of fiction so she was fighting an uphill battle from the get-go), she was the best option in a sea of trash. Lee's a sadistic monster, May is a diet Ed that isn't given enough screen time for us to see her complexities and Sarah is just the worst. Marie became the most popular girl in E, E & E because she had no competition, and I'm saying this as a fan of her. Also, she has the best character design out of all the female characters (no one likes polka dots, Nazz's lips look weird since the only other person that has them is Sarah, May wears a gray t-shirt which isn't that appealing to the eye and most people don't like people wearing dark pink)
