Honestly, Sam from a writing perspective is TERRIBLE. I am all about the activist non-conformist who does mistakes from time to time but my main issue with Sam is that she almost always never gets repercussions for her mistakes the same way Danny did. If she had SOME level of development as a character, I would root for her more. Otherwise, like you mentioned, incredibly passive and unchanging. The only episode she did get a lesson is that one with Freakshow appeared for the first time, and that's it. Review all the past episodes and you can see Sam is Butch's "can never be wrong" girl. If you know what happened in the writing room when Butch fired Steve Marmel for writing Valerie and Danny to begin with, you would simmer in anger or disgust.

I am so sick of writers thinking that if couples get together, then that's the end of the series. The trick to make this work is to have the couples go on and mature, working together as a team on adventures or later have a future series that shows us how their lives turned out.

It gets lampshaded between Kim and Ron in an earlier episode when they’re watching a teen soap. It’s remarked the leads of the soap won’t get together because the show will end. Season 4 of Kim Possible wasn’t on the cards when they were written to get together in the So the Drama movie, it was meant to be the conclusion to the show, as demonstrated through the school sign as the film’s final shot saying “End”. It was renewed against expectations, but at least explored following a relationship as a relationship and not a shiptease.

Sure Valerie would have been angry initially when she found out about Danny's secret, but they could have talked it out. They could have started over and worked together to keep the town and each other safe. This show missed out on a golden opportunity.

So many shows do this, where the short-term couple they write ends up having more chemistry than the main couple they wanted you to root for instead.
I sometimes wonder if they’re more conscious of story structure/obligatory scenes for the romance genre when writing those episodes and when it comes to series spanning couples, they have no structure in mind and just arbitrarily add ship teasers here and there as if that’s enough.
I find they often make the setup for the temporary couple very compelling but they don’t find an equally compelling reason for them to break up, it usually is so last minute and wasn’t hinted at from the start so the suspension of belief gets broken because of how jarring and often unbelievable the breakup is.
For Danny and Val it honestly was a cop out, and by not having a permanent reason to not date each other, such as incompatible personalities, it actually made you want to root for then more because the potential for their relationship that the episode set up didn’t go away, the episode still ended with you thinking they’d be great together.
They needed to make the audience satisfied they weren’t truly compatible after all, as well as add in something to hint why Danny and Sam WERE more compatible. Sam was a jealous downer the whole episode who did nothing to make us root for her, where as the obstacle between Danny and Val seemed very possible to overcome.

Like, them both having a crush on eachother but either not being aware or fearing it would ruin their friendship. That, isn't nessesarily a bad relationship.
It can be cute, fun and slightly annoying for the viewers but also somewhat believeable because sometimes people don't realise their own emotions or fear change that might make an otherwise amazing friendship awkward.
They need to stay acting as friends though! Otherwise it does not work! They need to continuesly support eachother, want to be around eachother and be happy for eachothers happiness. If you want to throw in some "Yeah, I support you being with this other girl/guy!....oh shit...no I dont...why am I so frustrated by this?!" then that is fine but they need to make it very obvious....also, they need to stop being coward...give them relationships...have them be heartbroken...make them act out on their emotions for fuck sakes! There's a very specific reason why Sam and Danny couldn't get together before the series finale. There are no interesting stories to be had with them as a couple. What would an episode with them together even look like? What would they do together that'd be so different from what they did through the whole show except now they kiss and we're done with the smug shipping? They could ONLY ever get together at the very end. With DannyXValerie I can think of a lot of story potential with their dynamic. Off the top of my head:
    - An episode with that old cliche "Oh no, being a superhero is going to make me late for my date" Except with a twist on that That they're BOTH worrying they're going to be late for their date because Valerie won't stop chasing Phantom.
    - An episode where they have an argument because Danny let's slip something sympathetic about ghosts. They both go through a really tough week ghost fighting and by the end of it, they give up on being mad and just want to be comforted by their girlfriend/boyfriend.
    - An episode where Danny's invited to dinner at the Grey household and both Valerie and Danny keep excusing themselves from the dinner all night to fight ghosts.
    - An episode where Sam, Tucker and Valerie have to team up and Sam comes to terms with Valerie as Danny's boyfriend.
    - An episode where Danny gets bruised from a ghost fight and Valerie goes on the rampage trying to figure out who hurt her guy.
    - And of course, an episode where Valerie finally discovers Danny's secret.

In my opinion, the main problem with Danny and Sam as a couple is that the writers of Danny Phantom broke the first rule of storytelling: show, don’t tell. They spent WAY more time talking about how they were inevitably going to end up together than they did actually establishing any romantic chemistry between them.
Compare this to Kim Possible, where Kim and Ron were always meant to be the endgame, but we actually SEE that slow burn as they go from “it would be weird because we’ve been best friends since childhood” to “you are the love of my life and I don’t even want to think about what I’d do without you”. It’s the little moments: Ron bailing on his job as assistant manager of Bueno Nacho to save Kim after she gets captured, the Christmas episode where Kim gives Ron a digital scrapbook of the two of them together and Ron goes off to fight Dr. Drakken on his own so Kim could spend the holiday with her family, the entirety of Emotion Sickness, etc. Three seasons worth of build-up, culminating in the made-for-TV movie So The Drama, where Ron finally lays his cards on the table and Kim finally realizes that “Mr. Right” was right in front of her all along.
Danny and Sam didn’t even have a FRACTION of that. It was just individual episodes focusing on their relationship but never making any real advances in it after Season 1 and the rest of the show was spent acting all smug about how obvious it was that they were the endgame without giving any reasons as to why they SHOULD be. And it’s made even worse by the fact that they even bothered to set Valerie as a romantic false lead at all. Because it shows that they COULD have written the pair of them as having genuine romantic chemistry. They just seemingly chose NOT to. Simply put, the longer the “will they or won’t they” went on for, the less I wanted to see them do.
When Kim and Ron kissed at the end of So The Drama, I felt rewarded for my time. Everything had been building up to the moment when they got together, we were given plenty of moments in between that gave us ample reason to WANT to see them get together, and then they do get together and it makes you look back at everything that led up to this and and you can’t help but smile as you watch the payoff. When Danny and Sam kissed at the end of Phantom Planet, I felt completely apathetic. They didn’t earn this like Kim and Ron did. They didn’t make nearly as many steps forward towards that endgame. It just… happens. And because of that, the only thing I could think was “Well now I KNOW the show is ending if they’re actually resolving this.”
Also, I find it hilarious that the writers of Danny Phantom set up the slow burn expecting the show to go on for much longer, only to have to rush through it when they got the notice from Nickelodeon that Season 3 would be the last, while the writers of Kim Possible plotted out THEIR romance arc in advance with the idea that Disney would cancel the show once they hit 65 episodes as per usual with them, only to get unexpectedly renewed due to mass fan campaigning.

Since you asked if I hated Sam for a reason that wasn't bad writing, to me the sticking point of her character is the 'I'm not like the other girls' mindset that so thoroughly defines her. As you said, it's not unrealistic for a girl growing in the 2000s to develop this mindset, and it would have been cool to see her out grow that attitude, but she doesn't because the show agrees with her. All of the other girls' save for Danny's mom and sister are presented as shallow bullies that aren't worth the time, and Sam talks a lot about how they aren't worth the time. She has no female friends, which is definitely a by product of being written by men, and actively antagonizes all the other girls she interacts with, including Jazz who by all logic she should be good friends with. It makes sense for the bullies, but your best friend's smart and mature sister? Let's not even get into her joining a beauty pageant to protest when all the girls just want to enjoy themselves and being a nag the whole time, and then she wins because the judge is crushing on her when all the girls actually worked for it and wanted it. That was literally just an animated version of a 'Not like other girls' meme. She's also just a huge try hard when it comes to Goth stuff. I'm not a Goth myself, but it really feels like she picked it up, not necessarily because she likes it, but because she wanted to be unique and no one else at school was doing it. Just listen to her talk about uniqueness and being her own person, just look at how her fashion is more punk than true Goth, and tell me that doesn't sound right. Again, this isn't unusual for a teenager, but the show never calls her out on this attitude and just validates it. And that really gets annoying and obvious. I grew up with this show, and when it really hit me what Sam's character actually represented, I just couldn't like her anymore.
I like to imagine a reboot of this show where Sam isn't treated like she's right all the time, is allowed to be immature and kind of dumb and to grow from that. A story where she actually does outgrow those ingrained misogynistic views of other women and actually forms real friendships with the other girls in her life. That would be so cool.

Sam always felt like a ‘just a phase’ goth where she’ll definitely grow out of it in a few years, I think even Butch admitted she wasn’t a true goth.
Another good reason is Sam gets special treatment from the writers a lot like Mabel Pines did where the show calls out their poor decisions but lets them get away with it even though it gives the character a chance to grow and change but they’re too attached to them as they currently are (at least I assume that’s why it happens)

In that conversation, he's actively worried because he can't control his powers, medical uniqueness is a bad thing and his concerns about his parents may be extreme, but reasonable. Instead of going "Oh, I have a clone of my enemy who can be my beloved child, just happened to be a girl" Vlad doubles down on the Danny clone idea and tries to use Danni to make it happen. He even calls her Danielle. Chick just...does not get an identity of her own out of the mess.) In Valarie's last real appearance, she bonds with Danni, reluctantly teams up with Danny to save her, and learns the truth about Vlad...which never goes anywhere cause the show ends a few episodes later. Now, imagine if Valarie and Danny got the blowup over their identities and saving Danni had become a first step in their reconciliation; they have to talk, and have a meaningful conversation. Suddenly, Danny has someone who he not only can talk to about his medical concerns, but someone he HAS to talk to about everything. How he can't really talk to his parents, or even his sister, how the only adult he's ever even heard of might have the medical expertise to help him but is absolutely untrustworthy, how his limited control and lack of a ghostly support/information network led to him often making mistakes
Danny Phantom as a show often leads me to pining about how many potential greatnesses they just dropped, (Tucker and Sam's shallow relationships with their identities, the Fenton parents dabbling in totally experimental tech that somehow always worked, Mr. Lancer's beautiful exclamations that just solidified his identity as an English teacher at every oportunity.) But maybe those missed potential moments are places other stories could pick up.

@@masked_undead539, @julian martinez now think about this; Valerie wasn't just the perfect romantic character for Danny, she was also the perfect character to check Sam's privilege.
Sam's rich, and while the aggressive "Everyone should go vegan" calmed down after the first season and a half, she never really gets corrected for that behavior. It's easy to forget, but dietary difficulties like that weren't really supportable in the 2000's. But Sam, who didn't have a part-time job, who had a family with a staff and, at least once, was shown to have her own greenhouse to be able to grow some of her food (probably not a sizeable percentage, but hey) was acting like everyone should go vegan.
Now, look at Valerie. Valerie has two jobs (Vlad could have been even more insidious by paying her, but he had a lot of dropped potential as a villain just like everyone else), so she doesn't have time, she has to save for college/help the family out, so she doesn't have money and she lives in an apartment.
Sam rails against her parents at a few weird things, but that's always over the goth thing, they're never shown trying to convince her to stop being vegan. Sam can be whoever she wants because of their money, and spouts a lot of eco fascist stuff without ever taking a broader picture of the thing. Her relationships with her identities are shallow (which, story-wise, isn't a bad thing as a character's starting point) but Valerie would have been the perfect character to make her think and commit.

Sam aged like milk while Valerie aged like wine. While in the 00s her character would have at least been considered progressive because she was nonconformist and sharp witted (and like in the early 00s every network needed at least 1 sharp-witted sassy goth girl) it definitely comes off like she was a NLOG stereotype, because she gets along with NO other woman in this show and 99% of the other women are shallow teenagers. There's no depth to her nonconformist interests besides being a talking piece that was ignored. She remained stagnant at best but there were scenes where she absolutely comes off as terrible of a person as a 15-year old teenage girl can be, and it just hurts nowadays to watch.
Meanwhile Valerie won our hearts by, well, growing one. She takes up a part-time job she obviously doesn't like to help her dad out (and it really feels like she didn't HAVE to do so to make rent but did so because he works long hours in the night) , she makes up for overbearing Danny with her schoolwork, she is very protective of Danny, etc. She starts as just another shallow popular girl and ends the show having a big heart. She has a more depth and a more unique role than female characters coming out TODAY and that's both impressive and depressing.
But honestly the most overlooked part of these 2 ships, is that Danny. Fucking. Tries. He shows her more attention in 1 episode than he does with Sam in practically every episode, and I get that's just to sell the ship to make the heartbreak harder to swallow, but it really hurts Sam in the long run when Danny doesn't get to, say, stay up all night DMing each other.
    Valerie deserved better.

I think a big part of why Danny/Valerie works where Danny/Sam doesn't is that Valerie was given a fully fleshed out personality, goals, and desires outside of Danny. Sam was simply never given that kind of love and care by the writing team. They went with 'not like other girls' and 'Goth poser' and didn't dig deeper into her. Which is a shame, because Sam has a lot of potential - why does she hide her wealth? Was she used by someone for it in the past? How did she get into being goth? What's her relationship with her parents like beyond their clashing; do they support her career aspirations or her hobbies? What *are* her career aspirations or hobbies? She could have been fleshed out a lot more and made into a character we would have wanted to see with Danny. But they just didn't try. And to me, that's worse than trying and failing.

There is nothing wrong with predetermined romances. Especially with animated shows. It literally comes down to the writing.
Yes, when it comes to live action, actors have chemistry. However the casting director is supposed to do their job and cast actors with chemistry. But ultimately the writing needs to support it. This was case of shit writing. They had a stale ship that was doing absolutely nothing at all, except reminding us every five seconds that they are endgame. Instead of making us want them to be endgame. They just told us that they were which takes out most of the fun of shipping. Then wrote an amazing character who had great chemistry and story potential. The writers just had massive egos about their endgame couple and vastly overestimated how much folks even cared about them together. But even without Valerie, Sam and Danny were still stale. It was an incredibly poorly done will they/won't they. I've had ships that took longer to get together. But it was written way better than this crap. Doesn't help that the show didn't realize how unlikable they made Sam. This was not about pre determined romances. It was just shit writing.

there’s a known formula for love stories, with specific obligatory scenes, and one of them is showing the audience how two people are perfect together but reveal an obstacle that’s keeping them apart that has to be overcome. They took these characters partway through a love story arc but stopped at the midpoint.
They didn’t actually prove these characters shouldn’t be together, they showed they WERE perfect for each other instead, so much so we rooted for Val to get with Danny eventually.
That episode in particular, tho it was very much a series wide problem, failed to show how Sam was the more compatible one for Danny, for that episode to work we should have had a B plot with Sam that made us root for her to eventually get with Danny, so we’d be happy by the end that Danny was still single and that Sam would still have a chance.
Likewise the reasons Danny and Val don’t get together needed to be from true character incompatibility, to satisfy the audience with that outcome, not a small complication that would be solved by an honest conversation to clear up a few misunderstandings. It just wasn’t relationship ending at all.
Val wanting to focus on ghost hunting actually made her MORE perfect for him, so Danny revealing his secret identity and Val getting the context to overcome her issues with his ghost self would have resulted in a perfect healthy power couple even better than the dynamic they already had in the episode.
Also, having Sam imply on several occasions she wouldn’t like Danny if he wasn’t a unique hero definitely doesn’t give you unconditional love perfect couple vibes that are required to make you root for a ship, so it’s no wonders why some people feel so strongly against the ship, as apposed to just passive disinterest.

I'm glad you pointed out the whole "everyone in the series drawing attention to the ship" thing being very irritating because its one of my biggest pet peeves in these kinda romances.
Characters teasing a ship, is fine , but it has to sound natural. When everyone in the show draws attention to the ship, or goes on about how perfect they would be together, and so on and so forth it stops feeling natural and starts feeling like the writers are trying to convince the audience of something they couldn't do visually and through story.
Star vs did this too with starco and it was so frustrating hearing the side love interests, especially, tell marco to get with star because of how perfect they are together.
    It doesn't work.
If you wanna tell the audience these two are a good match, show that, stop having other characters push it down our throats by telling us to like it.

is worse sense you bring up star vs. when writers are just pushing, forcing two characters together. on top of those two characters out of no where like each other romantically. like this dude said. star and marco liked each other as friends no hints of anything more. even seem like a sibling build going on. than out of no where they're characters been changed for romance rather about fighting evil. the show's not even about the title anymore. there other shows that done this to two characters that acted as really best friends. than randomly want them to have romance with no history hints that they did had a thing before one of them makes a move. like come on writers. make up your minds.

And now whenever Vlad is brought up to Butch he throws a massive tantrum and basically says he doesn't know him. I never really had a problem with Sam, but I never felt the intense chemistry that Butch Hartman desperately wanted me to feel between her and Danny. Episodes like Fanning the Flames just never landed for me because it just never felt like an endgame love. And I do agree with Steve Marmel that Danny and Valerie had more chemistry, development, history and buildup than Sam and Danny ever did. Valerie was easily one of the most interesting characters on the show and the dynamic she had with Danny was cool to watch because of how they do end up falling for one another. And the fact that we NEVER get to see Valerie's reaction to him being a ghost is just criminal. That could have made for really compelling drama.
Steve Marmel had the right idea with where to take Danny Phantom after season 2 and was really the reason why it had such a spark in the first two seasons. Combined with Butch's direction, they made for a great team. But Butch made it very clear in season 3 that he did not understand what made Danny Phantom such a great show and it ruined it by taking away the dark tone, not actually showing us stuff we wanted to see (IE Dan Phantom coming back for revenge) putting Danny and Sam together, and completely erasing Valerie Gray from the narrative.
It's ironic that by the creator of the show getting more involved, he ruined it.

Remember as you do that putting Jesus Christ’s lessons into practice in your own life is what makes it all click. Forgiveness is the key. Genuinely meaning it from within your heart. Start with your parents, they’ve loved you, they’re easiest. Also, there’s spiritual significance there that is really important. You must look inside, process your emotions, and forgive. That combined with the reading is what makes it all click.

It wouldn't surprise at all if Maddie came from a rich family(Jack likely didn't because he was born and raised in a log cabin) and she inherited their money after they died so it would explain why she and Jack didn't need real jobs.

I wish Val and Danny could work but I'm still happy that they had at least a small time for happiness. Also she had some of the best reactions like when she got unmasked and was so damn flustered mwah~ chefs kiss that is definitely a rational reaction from someone in her age group to have with this double life stuff.

*me a warrior cats fan:* heh heh heh heh ah ha ha ha ha AH HA HA HA HA HAAHAHAHAHA AHHHHHHHH.
    ohhhhhh.
H O N E Y Danny/Sam is TAME compared to THAT realm. But in all seriousness, yeah Danny/Sam I never really liked, cause I saw it was SUPER obvious. Just straight from the get go. I was like "oh they're best friends? Have been through a lot together? Yeah they're gonna get together by the end." And I do think Valerie might be better for Danny, but in all honesty, Danny has some THINGS to work on with himself before he could ever be in a relationship let's be honest. His self esteem for one, his hero complex for two, and stubbornness and lack of communication skills. I just never really BOUGHT Danny himself being able to be in a relationship, and NOT just because of the whole "he's a hero they can never have a happy ending" thing, but because him being a hero, THAT'S what makes him happy. Kind of a "they're married to the job" thing. Not "they're suffering because of the job" thing.

I never shipped them literally at all, it felt like they were two friends who everyone else thought were dating because apparently why else would you have a guuuuurrll in the show I guess until finally the rhetoric got to them too. Like, none of their “chemistry” felt remotely organic, which considering just how crunchy Sam is feels like an issue.

I know I’m a broken record at this point but THANK DANA FOR LUMITY. Actual character and relationship progression, you understand what, why and how the characters mean to each other and most important they don’t cock-a-doodle tease us for 3 seasons for an off screen kiss. Praise Dana, Praise the Titan, Praise Lumity

@@casualfanatic4217 as good as Lumity is, I honestly have a few issues with it. One is Luz's tendency to lie and hide things from Amity. And the show doesn't address that at all. I know that they don't have much time, but I feel like tge show DOES'T want to address it. Another one is that they never fight, even when Luz almost abandoned Amity. I am just waiting for a problem that they can't solve with talking. Also this might be just me, but they are too sweet.
