I came across this by accident (God bless You Tube), and I’m so glad you posted it. I hadn’t seen it 44 years (I was 24 then. I’m 68 now)! It still carries the same power as it did all that time ago. I read the story years before ’79. Taken as a whole it is a tale of midlife crisis that drifts into madness. The cast was brilliant and the story heartbreaking. I’m convinced Cash’s wife intentionally shot him. I saw it as a mercy killing. When she realized how her husband had lost touch with reality she basically put him out of his misery.
I also enjoyed your posting of The Sorrows of Gin, though compared to the above that story seemed to have some redemption at the end. It was mind blowing to see Sigourney Weaver early in her trajectory, and she would have her breakout role in Alien that same year. Edward Herrmann was in fine form as well. And think about it, if Mara Hobel was 8 in that TV drama she’s 52 now.
After watching the two I was convinced that these stories were the antecedent to American Beauty 20 years later.
