I have never seen John Belushi as the godfather. He is fantastic. He looks like him and he has the mannerisms down pat.

@@carolynzaremba5469 Yeah, that one cracked me up as well. I just watched again, and noticed for the first time that John wasn't the only excellent performer in this sketch. Laraine Newman nailed it, too.
The fact that Vito picked up an ORANGE to show how his feelings towards the Tattaglias is amazing, Oranges symbolised death in the movie.
That was actually a re-enactment of how Vito actually dies in the movie. In the garden, playing with his grandson, he puts an orange peel in his mouth and runs around.

I kinda felt a little ashamed by laughing uncontrollably at such a simple schtick, but Belushi is just flat out hilarious.. lol..

It's amazing how he covered almost all the aspects of the godfather in such a small sketch.
As great as Belushi is in this sketch -- and he is great -- I have to say that Laraine Newman OWNS it. She is a really underrated comic performer.
She came back for the 40th Anniversary SNL episode to be apart of the California's sketch.
I had a teen crush on her - she was always the highlight for me.

@Jamshaid Ali Yeah. It's pretty grim to take your own car out into the middle of a lake and just shoot it like that.
He probably flubbed that line, and it should've been, 'they blew up Michael's lovely wife and car'. But, minor point, Belushi is terrific!
As PJ O'Rourke says about _Thelma and Louise_ "with all this CGI, can't we re-shoot that movie, keep the happy ending, BUT SAVE THE CAR????"
I miss John Belushi and we all suffered a great loss when he died, but thank God we have these old SNL skits to watch again

One of the great injustices of life was being denied watching John Belushi grow old.
~ Laraine Newman nailed the Valley Girl thing, long before Moon Zappa ever touched it (but she did a great job too).
The sad thing is that 45 years ago they mocked it; now most Americans talk like this, if not quite as exaggerated.
The late, great John Belushi. He was a natural and I miss him every day.

SNL did a "Dueling Brandos" sketch once with Belushi and Peter Boyle, who did a great Brando impression himself!
How all of them were able to keep a straight face without laughing looking at John Belushi doing this skit is incredible.

John was amazing. Wow. He was truly great. He maintains perfect character with all the laughs. I don't think the world truly saw his amazing talent. Check his self audition before he was famous.
I remember the first time I saw this, growing up in santa cruz during the 70’s. I thought that Laraine Newman’s ditzy california blonde was spot on. It reminded me of some girls I went to high school with.

Nothing beat the original SNL cast. Genius! Lorraine Newman was under appreciated while on this show. Belushi was always great. Dead on with the Godfather. Is there a better "valley girl" than Lorraine?

I dated a girl in the 70s that was a dead ringer for her. It was so weird, even after a couple months I'd look at her and say to myself "Loraine Newmann". Every time we went somewhere people would do double takes, point, or you could see they wanted say something, a few would ask her if she was her of course and there were some autograph requests. She dumped me after a while saying all I wanted was sex. Now that I think back on it, yup, she pretty much hit the nail on the head.

I remember this when it first aired.i taught it was the best godfather impression i ever heard and i still think it is.
I actually saw this on TV live back in the 70's when I was a pot smoking, dumb, and clueless teenager, and I somehow knew that I was seeing history in the making. I never forgot the Godfather's girlfriend saying, "Guido, you're covering up." That killed me. RIP, John Belushi. You were the best comic and character actor ever. I loved you, man. Thanks for all the laughs.

Animal House is pretty much one of my favorite movies of all time with his role as Bluto I have never laughed my ass any harder since then. When he died a part of me died that day. RIP dude
