I’m a field technician and the machines that I work on are listed as “assets”. A piece of equipment that serves a purpose, honestly it makes a lot of sense to be used how they do but it sure does feel impersonal lol. Sounds like a video game thing. Your unit dies in Command and Conquer, Computer voice: “Asset lost”
It's supposed to feel impersonal. The military deliberately uses dehumanizing language in order to reduce the psychological impact of what they do. If they start thinking of the "other guy" as a living, breathing person with hopes and dreams, there's a really good chance they might start seriously freaking out. It's a hell of a lot easier to sleep at night when you say "target eliminated" than it is when you say "I just took a human life".
