Humpback Whale Scratches On Boat

- August 19th, travelling along the coast of BC in the Lewis Passage between Gil and Fin Islands we spotted a number of humpback whales in the distance; as we got closer, we could see one whale splashing and flipping in the water.
As the boat slowed, and then stopped, the whale approached. It came alongside the boat and started rubbing it's back on the underside of the boat. For close to an hour it continued to roll, spout, wave it's flippers and enjoy it's encounter with the boat.

this boat was the Perfect boat for the whale it is a 55 footer so strong Ferro Cement boat so the whale can pus against it and not do any damage and that is what it was doing. My Fathers boat and they were on a 2 week fishing trip with his cousin and Brother and friends.
This video is so calming to listen to and watch. It literally calmed my 4 year old. After she was watching it the third time I looked over and she was asleep. Thanks for this absolutely amazingly Therapeutic video 😌

To look into the eye of a whale is top of my bucket list but I get so overwhelmed and excited when I see beauty like this I turn into a three year old., they are so calm and yet majestic at the same time! Stunning once in a life prime experience!
Now this is what should've been recommended to me. Not that whining cringy squeal of a woman video with the one where the whale scrapped off the barnacles. This video is way more calming and its refreshing knowing that you lovely people have a well understanding of the whale and happily enjoyed the experience without all of the hooting and hollering.

Get over it. Everybody reacts differently but I'm pretty sure you and everyone else whining about it, would be screaming too if a whale came up out of the water and scraped the railing of your boat.
Fear when a whale breaches onto your boat and could possibly capsize/damage it, I'd say her fear is fairly placed.

Either his ears, brain, or mouth don't work properly, but he was twice as cringy as the girl.
Hes trying to get the barnacles off. They itch and damage the poor whales skin something awful. I'd give anything to be able to scrape all the barnacles off of these whales.
I saw a video where a whale breeched on a boat to get barnacles off.
It was terrifying to see them get so close but you knew they weren't going to harm the boat or people

Such a great experience, we have the same whales here in the Rockaways. Unfortunately I captured footage of one beached😔 but I also have whale watching clips.
Since a few years we have, by accident, humpbackwhales. Think they are young/ juvinile's who got mistaking by sonar and sounds of nearby vessels, turning right to de Noordzee/ Netherlands.
How are they so gentle?

Same in South Africa, you may not approach whales. But someone forgot to inform the whales, so they do come up to the boats. If we are fishing, we pull up lines and if we're on anchor we keep a sharp knife handy to cut the anchor rope. But it has also happened that a "baby" whale that was very friendly and curious while the boat was drifting, became very aggressive once the motors were started and the boat got underway. Not fun dodging an angry whale with a boat full of fish.

Humpbacks are part of the "Rorqual" family which also includes the Blue Whale and the Fin Whale. The most instantly identifiable about them are their throat grooves which make their mouths expand ten fold.
Humpbacks, being the friendly, approachable creatures they are had the misfortune to become prime prey for whalers after the harpoon cannon with exploding harpoon was invented in the late 1800's, to give you a very sobering statistic, not nearly 20 years after its invention 90% of all the humpbacks were wiped out.
There's a movie about Whaling shot in the fifties where Humpbacks are seen approaching the factory ship and the narrator says "It would appear they are mocking us since they are of a species which is outlawed, we cannot shoot them according to international law."
So the fact that they're still around is a miracle.

I had this strong urge to pick those barnacles off the whale and I don't know why. I had the same problem whenever my cats came back from their outdoor venture with ticks too.
