I've just read so many negative comments. Why?
Watch the the video, just bought it some months ago, they didn't leave it for 10 years the previous owner did.
His boat then so upto him what he does with it.
Now after enjoying a few months with it, the new owners are starting the journey to look after it so they can enjoy it for a lot longer.
Please stop with the negative comments and enjoy and encourage others doing something.
Personally I'd like to say thankyou for filming the work your doing and letting me watch and enjoy your progress.
I wish you all the very best to enjoy the boat and the work your putting into making it the best it can be.
I've subscribed and will happily wait for future episodes and enjoy watching as you make progress, and if I comment it will be positive, hopefully many more will do the same.

Gross 🤢
You might want to add Aluminum or zinc annodes to help protect the shafts from corrosion.
Haha, it was there, but gone after years without replacement 😁
Make sure they are zinc. There is a company that makes the best quality anodes called Zimar International in Davie, Florida.

Just wait till you have the hull sanded out and the painted with the anti fouling paint that will add about two to three knots to your top end, get the exhaust tubes cleanejd and there is a bit more fuel efficiency, do the insides first and replace the electronics that takes a few hundred pounds off while putting in energy efficient unitsalong with new radios and radar. Yeah, this boat will be looking good both inside and aling the hull lines.

OMG ! If you had 1,000kg of pasta you could have opened a seafood restaurant.
Haha 😂
Thinking the same thing.
What does 1700 pounds of pasta have to do with anything?? You don't eat barnacles.
Same as me, I think the boat has lost about a ton in it's gross weight 😅
Do they eat that shit thought it was like Corral reef hard shell like Them things that grow on lobsters and crabs
Thank you for the great video. Any time I get the itch for owning a yacht I just search CZcams for “barnacle scrapping “. No more itch.
Haha, you do it once (and even not you) and after you don't have this problem 😉
The primary issue in any undertaking is taking that first step. Most enjoyable time is to see the massive amount of barnacles that had found a home on the hull and to see their eviction. I could watch that over and over. From a massive environment of slimey crude to a respectable hull once again. Looking forward to seeing the transformation

I don't think ive ever seen that much growth on a hull before. Way,way overdue and hopefully no damage to the hull. alot more work left to do, scraping and sanding and bottom paint, clean and refinish rudder, props and prop shafts, check seals, etc.
Luckily the hull was not damaged 😉
Ive seen growth just like that…. In a pier 😆😆😆
Fuel consumption just improved dramatically. That was just crazy!

I never thought how satisfying it is to watch barnacles being power washed off of a hull, and nice music too! 😂
Thanks, me too actually 😁
This boat had its own portable micro-eco system on its hull. Glad to see you taking care of the boat, considering the fact you live on this boat you may want to invest in some Sharrow Propellers.
Heh yeah, we were surprised how many creatures we were able to find there 😅
I think we will wait till we install Tesla drive units in there and after we will play around with the props. But yeah I’ve been thinking about them. Don’t really think they will work for us tho because we are planning to cruise at 4-6 knots so the efficiency of Sharrow props at that speed is questionable
@@YachtCityLife I have been watching quite a few test videos on it including independent ones that bought the props with their own money, the results are interesting.
Everyone has said they get on plane MUCH faster which really helps with fuel burn, but its about 26% more efficient in cruise which if you are living on a boat and moving often from port to port this could end up saving you some money. The props are much more efficient per revolution than traditional 3-4 blade props, coupling that with those tesla drive units and you could definitely extend your range and efficiency.
I do not work with or have any affiliation with Sharrow, I just like their product and I plan on using one of their props when I get my boat. The design is sound, at least from an aviation perspective (I am a pilot), we deal with wake turbulence and vortices all the time, that Sharrow prop eliminates about 99% of that issue regarding tip vortices.
@@Spartan536If that was true, the Navy would be using them on submarines. They aren't.
Swapping the diesel to electric drives is a terrible idea.
@@TehButterflyEffect I was taking about the Sharrow Props increasing efficiency
My father and I owned Boats back in the 1980's. We had them slipped in College Point Queens. We would sail the Long Island Sound from College Point up through Oyster Bay and Eventually our longest trip was to Montauk. We own a 32' Revel Craft Fly Bridge Cruiser ( BIG SHOT) and a 28' SeaRay Weekender.(BUBBLE-UP) . The water in and around Lower Manhattan and the areas we moored were some of the dirtiest waters, we would sometime keep the boats in the water over winter. We did that 1 year, and you wouldn't believe the growth even during winter when the waters were colder. Never again, Boats came up on the hard ever winter after that. I remember scraping and Power washing all the barnacles and slime off the bottom. We went with Copper Anti Fouling paint, but even using it, we still had issues. It's just part of Boating and maintenance. Happy sailing! love YOUR boat !, Give us a Tour of the entire boat especially your motor room !

Shelter Island in Richmond has the pressure washing of the hull as part of any haul out, even if it's just to change anodes or a survey.
And they do not allow anyone not staff to run the pressure washers.
They are also one of the larger hard stands in the area that allows owners to work on their own boat and one of the lower cost yards.
Thanks)
You actually can wash the hull at your own there and not to pay $160 (they offered us this option)

@@jaquigreenlees yeah, on the website they don't have this option but they ask it by phone and in person, we also were surprised!)

@@PaulPopham-po5vw they invented an Anti Fouling paint that prevents it, but after so many years it just washed out 😄 ideally you need to renew coverage every several years
This was my job. I used to wet blast hulls, then epoxy and anti foul them. A very rewarding job. are you going with standard anti foul? or copper cote?
We are not sure yet, for now the cheapest one, and next season we'll see 😁
The fuel efficiency must have a noticeable improvement.
You would think there would be some kind of coating for the bottom that would keep those barnacles from sticking. Or something to repel them, no?
There was special paint, but you need to renew it every once in a while and it just washed out over the years 🙈😅

Here in Los Angeles, I have a diver clean my hull every month! When is the last time you dived and cleaned it?
We didn't, this boat didn't have a haul out for the last 10 years for sure, almost likely nobody dived and cleaned it as it was sitting in a marina
Imagine how much pasta you could've made with all those mussels!!!
I hope you had a complete vessel survey done prior to purchase. If the previous owner allowed the hull to get this bad, what other maintenance was ignored?
We didn't have it done prior to purchase, I am sure you'll enjoy other videos on our channel 😉
After words the owner was overheard saying “this thing seems so much faster and the nautical miles per gallon has gone up!” Lol!

This should be properly treated and checked on a yearly basis as some build up might be expected but the amount will depend on how you treat the boat and the solution you choose. It will probably save you a bit of money on fuel too,
Yeah, this boat has a history we can't change, but a bright future ahead 😉

I'm curious what they did with all those live barnacles they washed off? Were there any concerns about where bthey were dumped?
@@davidstopher7020 we didn't ask but they needed to dispose them as they can't go back to the water
It would be interesting to know when was the last time the boat was actually used?
Last 8 months (check other videos)😅 before this she was staying in marina for years
Good luck shafts and rudders are shot and the bottom is not good hope you allow at least 6 months just for the bottom and have a good budget for shafts , cutlass bearings, heat exchangers , at least rudder posts ect ect
😂😂😂
Did you say that mussel (or barnacle) soup was on your menu for the day?
That should make it much more economical to operate the vessel with all of that drag removed. Now you have a big job of cleaning the remains and repainting with anti-fowling paint after you fix any and all imperfections in the hull from the neglect.
The engines should run much cooler with the cooling inlets uncovered and the trim plates might work now that the rams are not covered in barnacles and mussels. The real work begins when you are on the stands in the hard. You will have many hours of scraping, sanding, fairing, and gel coating so that you can get back into the water. There is also repacking the shafts, servicing the through hull valves, replacing the shaft support bearings, new zincs to reduce any corrosion on metal parts, primiering the hull, antifouling paint and regular hull painting.
Thank you for the short preview of our future videos 😁
Thank goodness smellovision never became a thing :o
Haha, it was not that bad yet (if we left it for a couple of days it would be) 😂
It’s not over now it’s time to scrape repaint.
Right, in the future videos 😉
Hi folks,
It's not advisable to leave lifting the vessel out of the water for this long. You will find some repairs that will need to be done and this will increase your maintenance costs. I suggest that you and your partner lift the vessel out of the water at least once a year and repaint the antifouling at this time and as others have suggested you can notice an increase in speed and a reduction in fuel consumption.
Not being nasty but this is how you get into difficulty at sea and you risk losing your vessel as a result don't want to see that happen to any boat owner especially if you are using the vessel as a live aboard house boat
Hi,
We know that, we simply just got an opportunity to lift it only now as we bought it recently 😉 We've been also waiting for this moment and already have so many plans for future repairs!
@@YachtCityLife great to hear that all the best with your future plans. We'll check this once we get back to the water, we are still on the land and doing repairs ☺️
Just curious what does it cost to haul a boat that size out and have the marina clean it? And just in general what sort of monthly costs are there in this lifestyle? Are you retired or still working remotely?
I am a software developer and will have an empty nest soon, so just thinking about the future. I'm not poor, but also not rich. Not sure where you need to be on the economic ladder to consider this sort of lifestyle.
You can check at the website of Shelter Island Marina and Boatyard the prices for different sizes. The clean up was $160, the rest I don't remember in detail, but this is the most affordable marina in our area. We'll record the video about monthly costs soon, they can also vary depending on if you are mooring or anchoring (as we do).
We are working remotely, so yeah, it's a great option and we personally think it's way cheaper and funnier, than renting/having a house. We are now investing in our boat how much we would spend on rent and the boat getting way more comfortable than our studio we rented, plus soon we'll be able to travel where we want, which is incredible!
