Of course it's somehow joy and salvation but at least the tail slapping at the end is definitly a form of communication. Whales usually communicate with each other acoustically, but also by fin-slapping the surface, particularly in the event of danger or bad weather and rough and noisy seas. _Breaching_ is suggested to be "honest signalling", signing that you are physically fit - or all free. Looks like scientists need more emotional intelligence, because the small child understands a message in a few minutes for which scientists needed decades and large amount of studies.
Sometimes this breaching/jumping out of the water was also observed right after exceptionally long dives. It could be the whale: *_"I'm back."_*
But to shame the scientists completely, this clever child is probably even right that the whale communicated with _them._
The noise of a lobtail or breach travels much less well than that of a vocal call. Since the sea isn't rough and noisy and there are no other whales around, but the whale chose this form of communication, only the humans are left, her saviors, with whom the whale wanted to "talk".
PS: In addition, it must have been very important for the whale to do so, because this breaching costs a lot of energy.

@@elduderino7767 As usual.. Someone always comes along and makes absolute statements on a topic that is still very under-researched.
Of course we can observe behavioural routines and come to the most probable scenario based on those results, but we should also always take into consideration how limited our knowledge is, and that the only way we can expand our understandings, is by collecting data to cross-correlate, and to use that data as an educated estimate, not a concrete fact.
I'm not saying that this whale was showing appreciation, but to assume that it doesn't have the capacity to adapt it's usual behaviour to a very unusual scenario, would be to place a brick wall around our understanding of these very mysterious creatures. Intelligent creatures that are providing more and more new and revealing information within studies that lead to scientific breakthroughs and broader understandings in general, the more time moves forward, as field experts and technology become more precise at analyzing.
The whale was most likely communicating with its pod, like you said, but my issue is with your outright denial of it having the potential to be another, far less observed, type of interaction. Especially when we've seen that whales and dolphins in particular, are capable of advanced interaction with humans and other animals, and have done so countless times, as captured on recorded footage.

We were talking about over hunting and killing animals for sport. I can't speak for all tribes but on the reservation I grew up on, we hold anything alive sacred. You are absolutely correct, not all tribes hold the same lifestyles but in general, we Natives don't go around paying to "hunt" wild game. Peace to you.

A woman was saved from a shark by a humpback, one also saved a seal that was being attacked by orcas and let it ride on its belly.

But when you see an animal in wild suffering, people are willing to risk their lives to save it, no matter what. People are good in their heart, but they are ignorant and that is what makes us the worst. We have the intelligence to make the world better, yet we only make it worse because of our ignorancy.

Nice thought, but most likely she is really signaling to her kind, This behavior is a known communication system over great distances - the impacts create sounds that travel immense distances and the energy used to create them is minor compared to that required to achieve the same effect vocally. But, hey! It certainly could be a way of expressing joy and thanks.

The whale is clearly having an experience of utter relief and joy. An animal with an immense depth of inner experience.
Yet people still often view animals as somehow... "not conscious". In religious terms people say they have no soul. Soul meaning personhood essentially. As in, they see, hear, feel, love, etc. More than just words. The only way I can truly describe the notion in accuracy is to say they are people or they have a soul. Even that is lacking, you just have to look them in the face and try to sense what they are feeling and thinking, then you can see the depth of their humanity. Deeper than most humans I come across--literally.
Most of us go about our normal lives unconscious of the unspoken world of communication that exists between all life. We're so used to relying on speech that we ignore what's being communicated in the eyes, face, etc. It's been a while since I've been to a zoo or anything of the sort but I do remember going up to the dolphin tanks with the glass looking in and coming face to face with them. It's a damn near shocking reminder of what that animal truly is.
It looks at us and it thinks things of depth and communicates things of depth to us through physical gestures. There was a person in that tank--perhaps of even greater intelligence if you regard it's ability to read situations, emotions, body posture, etc. Through this means these animals collect a lot of information about what is going on.
That whale felt so lucky to have those people come across him and free him. It's like he couldn't believe that he was saved.
They go through life without civilization, education, complex verbal language. They learn through watching, imitating. They read faces, read eyes. They survive in the wild and learn many many things about the world around them. Learning what's dangerous and what's not. If you take a seal for example they will run at the site of an orca but approach humans without fear--they learn this through past experience.
If you consider their lack of opposable thumbs, civilization, and formal education--they demonstrate "common sense" intelligence that surpasses any human. Literally. Their natural intelligence (ability to read situations and people through posture and expression; the sorts of things learned through experience) surpasses humans by far. As far as our "book smarts" surpasses theirs.

They're more aware of us than we think. I was out on a little tiny kayak in Redondo Beach and I accidentally paddled right out into a group of humpback whales. I think it was a mother and her calf. I didn't see them breach until I got too close. It was like they started breaching when I get near. I didn't want to panic or hit one with a paddle on accident so I just sat there. They were doing incredible jumps and tail slaps but when they started getting close to me they stopped. One of their belly flops would easily kill me but they didn't do it too close to me. The mother breached right up alongside me and I got to touch her rubbery back. I started to paddle back but they actually followed me. Or it seems like they did cause they were still doing their show from the same distance. I got another breach right up alongside me and I saw the tail go up but thankfully it didn't slap or else that might have hurt. I paddled back towards the shore and they swam off. BUT I would not recommend doing what I did. They might be peaceful creatures but they're so massive it's easy for them to accidentally hurt you. I felt like a tiny ant in comparison to their size that close up.
