  • How does a cheap bismuth turkey load compare to the extremely expensive and popular Federal TSS and Hevi-Shot Magnum? Are these loads really worth the money? Thanks for watching @firstnaturebackland

    I'm a Stevens 301 in 410 turkey hunter. Sumtoy scope mount, Burris Fastfire red dot, Comp N Choke 390 constricton turkey choke. Viper and or Verdict 3" TSS 9.5s. 1 ounce loads. tagged out last spring here in Missouri with it and plan to again next month as well. Deadly out to 40+ yards easily. TSS is an absolute game changer in the sub guage turkey load game.

      I’ve seen more and more folks using 410. I personally don’t know anyone who uses one. But I know some folks swear by it for turkey. 9.5 seems small but that makes sense if you are using a 410 with a choke like that. I need to get a red dot to complete my setup. I’m going to check out the Burris. Good luck this season!

      @@FirstNatureBackland you too man. I switched my mount from a Sumtoy to the EGW and it's better made in my opinion. You can't go wrong with a Burris Fastfire.

      7/9 blend from apex is a winner out of my 301 Stevens 20 gauge using the stock choke. 9’s are good also.

    I got a new Remington 870 12 gauge turkey gun for this year. I have to test the shells and chokes I got in it still. But the past 3 years I ran my Remington v3 waterfowl pro with Carson turkey. 670 and hevyshot magnum blend.

      That’s great! Excellent way to dual purpose your waterfowl gun. Good luck with your new 870 Turkey gun this season.

    The federal TSS were made for the Carlson's Heavyweight TSS turkey choke that has a .640 constriction. I want to try a Primo's Jelly Head and Tight Wad. Thanks for the test on the tight wad. I currently use the the Carlson on my Tristar Viper max and I use the Cabela's Black Maxx .665 constriction on my JTS EG200. I do use the Federal TSS #9 with the Carlson and I use Winchester Long Beards on my Black Maxx.

      Nice. Every time I see Win Ling Beard I want to pick some up, but I can’t use it in CA. If there is a tungsten version I haven’t seen one. I plan on picking up the Carlson Heavyweight for next season. I can’t wait to try it out. Thanks!

    Wow. That’s Cali I wouldn’t have guessed with all the tree huggers
    Your right!! That makes us all look bad. You should post a clean up day. And see who shows.
    You can also use a realtor sign frame or a political one. I just collapse a box and tape it on. My range uses tire backstops. Try to tape dirty rubber!!!
    I might try the Kent also. I have an 1187 with a turkey rem choke.

      A clean up day is good idea. I’ll reach out to the forest service to see about closing that road for a clean up day. There are dozens of spots just off that one road that look like that.
      I use boxes too. I’m just a sucker for simple and effective innovations. Thanks for supporting!

    All those patterns are tight….i got into the TSS and tight choke setups a few years ago and missed several birds because at 10-15 yards the pattern was size of baseball. I’m back to shooting lead and looser chokes and like a good spread out pattern. I like that Steven’s 301 20 ga…my wife just got the Steven’s 301 Turkey in the .410 ga and it’s a nasty little turkey gun with TSS. I’m shooting a Winchester SX4 20 ga. I retired my Mossberg 835 a few seasons ago. Best of luck with your new NWTF Chapter and good luck this spring chasing those Merriams out west.. 👍🏻🍺

      The TSS definitely seems most valuable for making the 410 a reasonable hunting shotgun in terms of quality patterns. It is nice, but sure seems like overkill for the other gauges at reasonable ranges. I do really love that developments continue to be made in the shotgun world, and hope to see someone develop a TSS type load that is reasonably priced. Would make the 410 viable for more high volume shooting.

    • @FirstNatureBackland
      @FirstNatureBackland  Před 4 měsíci

      Agreed! TSS is outrageously priced. It’s understandable that it probably costs more to manufacture but 200% - 300% more than comparable lead loads is just crazy. But hunters pay it. And in states like California we really have limited options here.

    Hevi-x strut
    Hevi-metal.
    Those are about the only other types of shells you can use that are better than steel alternatives a little different than what you have here. And i believe both are cheaper than the magnum blend by a decent amount. Obviously there are other brands that load bismuth, and other heavier-than-steel waterfowl loads that you could try. But basically covers the majority.

    • @FirstNatureBackland
      @FirstNatureBackland  Před 12 dny

      I’ve been curious about trying waterfowl loads for turkey, but I’d hate to waste a shot and injure a bird. I’m certain it’s been done before though. Hunters of generations past didn’t have heavy tungsten loads. Lead loads are out of the question in CA but interestingly they are still sold in stores. 🤔 thanks!

    You didn't shoot at 40 yards. My guess is you shot at 20 yards which is based upon patterning a vast number of 20 gauge guns and both factory and reloaded shells. In all my testing the Hevi-shot blend fell apart at 30 yards. The old Hevi-shot straight #7's was a killer load. The Federal #7's at 14 g/cc was right behind. We now roll our own TSS #9's at about $4.50 a shell.

    • @FirstNatureBackland
      @FirstNatureBackland  Před 4 měsíci

      I wanted to pattern at 40 yards but it was difficult to get beyond 30 yards with the terrain of that spot. It’s also painful to keep shooting when it’s $10 per round. So I settled on 25 yards. But $4.50/round is outstanding. I just got into reloading. Hopefully in the future I’ll start doing shotshells. Thanks for watching.

    magnum blend uses #5 and #6 lead so it is a mostly lead load

    • @BrianBlake-oz4ru
      @BrianBlake-oz4ru Před 4 měsíci

      Sorry but the 5 6 7 in the magnum blend is a tungsten based a federal 3rd degree 5 6 7 is a lead based in the 5 6 but the 7 is a heavy weight shot

      Not true. All nontoxic.

      So long as the label says “lead free” or “non-toxic”, that’s what CDFW cares about.
