Life of a Plumber - Replacing Broken 2-Way Cleanouts

- Come with me on a ride along where we go replace some broken 2-way cleanouts. The original cleanouts weren't installed correctly and had weird drain line that was probably for a pool. After my guys located the break, and our dig crew dug up the cleanouts, I went out to replace the whole thing.

Thank you for sharing videos, I have learned and continue to increase knowledge base. I am a Senior Chief Engineer with a property management company, I thought I knew a lot but after watching your videos...I am humbled. Thanks again and I appreciate your willingness to share industry knowledge. I am a better engineer because of it. 👌👍
More in the field videos! Gotta catch up with the Carpenters youtube guys. Haha
Yessir
Can you do a video showing tricks to finding manifolds in walls
Do you put root ban on your ferncos?
These are good videos Rodger, I’m an apprentice, little things like this help me understand the trade more!
Great video good work love this channel
If I can ever find a way to make money at it I will have it made!!!
I'll be learning as much as I can from your content. Good stuff.
Nice job there Roger good to see you on the tools!
I love the two-way clean out, but I have to admit in 28 years of construction in my area I've never seen one of those. I've dug many sewer lines for the plumbers and worked on new construction most of my life and they don't use a big sweep here they just use a regular t so you can finagle your snake either direction. I love seeing the way they do things in other parts of the country.
Job done mate, thumbs up.
Just had mine crack. Thanks for the information.
I love the videos where you go out to job sites.
I don’t. It’s too much like work... I actually love it too. Please don’t tell my boss/wife... She will have me out here every day.
Love your work Roger. I like people who have pride in their work
Sir, you are a beast with that Leatherman. Being one of my go to tools in everyday life, I appreciate your skills.
Good job, very professional.
Thanks, very informative!!!
Good job I'm following you 5 year ago I watched your videos about 6 or 7 years really like your instruction Thanks so much Sir
Must be someone else from that far back. We have a couple of videos from about 3-4 years back. We just started getting serious about video 1 year and 8 months ago. It does seem like forever though. Thank you for watching!!!
@@RogerWakefield Is it legal to use a two way clean out fitting in Texas here in Oregon we use them all the time?
I love this channel I learned a lot every day and it making me improve my plumbing job and communicate with my customer service. Thank you RW.
It's a pleasure to see you work Mr.Wakefield, you take great pride in your work because I've seen so-called "professional plumbers" neglect to debur and ream copper or PVC pipes and if you question them about why they fail to debur and ream the pipes they get all bent and catch a major attitude.Thank you for your video,God bless you and yours.I use deburring and reaming drill bits to debur and ream PVC pipes. The deburring and reaming drill bits are what I normally use when doing locksmith work and since the bits work so well for locks and doors I also use the deburring and reaming bits when ever I have to do PVC pipe installation.I have a dedicated deburring and reaming tool for copper pipe as well.
7:30 : Line up the marks all nice and neat... There's no marks. But it sounded good.
LOL
nice job..good point about the cleanouts facing the correct way....up here in northeast we usually transition to cast iron going under a slab or thru foundation walls or buried anywhere...were down 3 -4 feet..
I'm glad to see how much twist he puts in, I'm glad to see I did allot of work correctly
Whoever is doing your editing is having way too much fun, haha! I would like to see more videos like this in the field!
Great content as always! I love your videos and the way you dynamically switch up the format and editing is always nice, hard to figure which is best yet but either way I’ll keep tuning in for helpful tips and interesting topics!!😎👍❤️
i love watching people do the jobs they love doing. its awesome
Mr.Wakefeild I'm fairly new too the trade but have 3 to 4 years of construction experience and I love it! Your videos are entertaining but knowledgeable as well! Keep it up boss man coming from Lynchburg Virginia
👍 good job 👏
I love this style of video. Sorry it took my 4 months to see it. Your content is A+ Roger!
Perfect job done!!! 👍
It's somehow satisfying, watching Roger baste the hell out of those pipes in primer and flux. :)
I really enjoyed this video Roger. 👍
Awesome work. Thanks!
Glad to see my house is apparently lacking proper sewage. I’ve only got one cleanout going somewhat toward the house. Great video! I’ve learned a lot in the last few weeks.
My name is Rogger Wakefield and my tools are often covered in shit sometimes metaphorically but usually litterally and this is the day of the life of a plumber.
Yep. All the way to the bank.
How I know this video is realistic and accurate. Pulling up to the job site, looking at the previous work, saying, "wtf?!" Well done. Entertaining and informative and you took out the burrs. I'm seeing them more often it's such sloppy work to leave them on. Now about those hard to reach isolation tricks with them test balls?
It’s coming. I am working on sewer camera quality.
You'd like to work in Canada,or at least Alberta. I'm an electrician, but even for PVC conduit if the inspector can see burs, they're likely to call you back on it.
I'm digging that Leatherman Super Tool Roger👍
@BobsPlumbing ideas that’s one of my favorites!!! Thank you sir!!!
Great work.
Getting muddy is just a day in the life
Are you sure that's "mud" it is plumbing after all :P
Now this is a real plumber keep getting that money!
We either use 4 band shielded couplings( cp bands or no hubs) but thet have a spacer in the middle of the rubber.
We want to know about basic electricity that the plumber should know in order to be more successful and overcome any obstacle might occur during any plumbing job
Okay. Black to black. White to white. Copper to ground.
Hey Roger, we at FisherPluming.inc liked the video! Wished you had showed the importance of bedding the pipe with stone to insure it stayed at the proper elevation, to prevent future brakes.
Also, would love to see you get a vice so you no more wrestaling the pipe on the ground! lol
great job...I wish i had seen this before I tried helping my friend unclog his sewer pipe...learned more in 15 minutes than I did is 2 hours of head scratching yesterday
Your skills are top level.
I appreciate that!
This kept me hooked and I don’t watch plumbing videos but this was brilliant man . I learnt a lot off this . But that pipe did look like your moustache lol . Great job mate loved it
I think you were looking at the back side of my #Wrangler jeans!!! Thank you for watching. I love your videos and everything you do on #CZcams!!!!
Roger Wakefield thanks man . You where one of my hilights of vid summit . I didn’t go to hear people talk crap I whent to see the people I admire and call friends .
The urban explorer I’m right there with you brother. It was great seeing, hugging, and talking to so many amazing people. See you soon!!!
Good job bro
Good job
Great video
Great video thank you.
I love this guy...
I almost can't believe I'm seeing a plumber check his cuts for square, nice work
Also love how you pulled up in a Jeep 😂and the hole was already dug when you got there
When you got money to get people to dig for you what does it matter
The diggings the hard part. Funny he paid them a fraction of what he made to play with some pvc. Pays to have a license i guess. Just wish there were practical exams instead of mandatory slave labor working for some dick to get the time in.
Damn well said my friend
I just got a kick outta it
@@BlueCollarSlave youll never make it in plumbing with a victim mindset
It so satisfying when he puts the glue on.
NICE PLUMBING, VERY PROFESSIONAL! 'DO THE RIGHT THING TO OUR CUSTOMERS DO NOT RIPP THEM OFF'
The wtf part killed me 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Always a food day when you get dirty
The thing I really like about Roger Wakefield is the fact that he makes it very well known and obvious that he likes to help people out instead of ripping them off by giving them to pay for more than they should. Instead he does the job right and he charges a fair decent pricewhich makes him more money in the long run
You don't get very far ripping people off
Roger love your vids been in the bizz 15 years still learning new things when I watch your videos keep up the good work brotha but if you don’t tape your primer can to your glue can I’m lose my mind lol😂🤣
Here in Cali we use a 2 way clean out fitting. We install round g5 concrete box with metal sewer lid set in the sidewalks. Has to be permitted
1:01 😂🤪😂🤪
Love these videos. Thanks so much 🙏👍🙏
Hey Roger ive always wondered this but why do some areas use PVC and some use ABS for drains? Out here in Southern California we use ABS or cast Iron its really rare you see PVC used as drain lines out here its often used as water lines though and primarily used as irrigation.
I’m from west Texas and if there are cast iron sewers… we will definitely change it to pvc.
Pvc last longer than cast iron.
I had to change one that was 20 years old and it would literally crumble in my hands.
Roger do yourself a favor and purchase a proper pipe deburring tool ( Reed DEB4) and a proper cutter (Reed TC4QP). Great video though!!
I thought making the letters face out was code. I don’t recall it specifically from the test, classes, or seeing the code but it’s just how I was always taught. I was taught you needed to so the inspector can make sure you’re using the correct pipe.
Hey Roger sorry to bother you again it's called a deburring tool for pvc pipe. I use it on 2" 3" pipe when I do power vent water tanks. Definitely would probably help when doing those pipes
Hi Roger, i like your videos of real issues you face out in the field. I am not a plumber (although i have watched hundreds of plumbing videos), but would have thought you would use a pvc pipe cutter to get a clean straight cut and a deburring tool to give you a nice machined chamfered edge. i know a recip saw is quick and easy, but i would have thought a little more time to achieve a perfect chamfered fit would be the end goal. maybe i am just pedantic! keep up the good work. chur
You can use it. I am just starting but that saw is very nifty for many material and cast iron and wood. I got used to the saw but it's really what you prefer to use. Plumbing is just big puzzle with just a few rules on code that you have to follow. Just try to be efficient and use as little parts as possible to reduce cost and that it is all sealed and tight. Also check with how your employer how he or she wants it done. Somehow that matters. 😒
I've been plumbing for a couple of years now and I have never seen anyone use pvc cutters on 4 in pipe. I don't even know if they make such a tool. If you are skilled at cutting, a sawzall is sufficient for drain laying. I believe the pvc would only necessarily need to be beveled if it was going to be under pressure (water), you just need to get a straight cut and clean of burrs.
I have actually used those in industrial work. Pressurized CPVC. In sch 40 DWV we always use saws. Pipe cutters take a little too long. And I cut really straight...
I work in the swimming pool business a PVC cutter does not give you a clean straight cut on schedule 40 or thicker pipe. Cutters will also shatter older pipe that has been exposed to outdoor elements ie pool plumbing at the equipment. If you watch how cutters work they deform the the pipe as you squeeze the handles till the blade starts to cut. On 2 inch pipe and up you end up nice clean cut but it will be angle at least in one direction. If it's old pipe forget about it. I always let a new guy try it because they won't believe it, so I hand them the safety glass, step back and watch them crap there pants as the pieces fly ever where. Gets that out of there system real fast as they ask for the saw.
@@keithmeyers3718 Hi Keith, thanks for your detailed explanation, very informative. i have experienced these issues you describe. i was probably thinking more along the lines of using a rotational plastic pipe cutter eg: Rothenberger plasticut pro, Rothenberger Rocut 110, Ridgid PTEC 5000, Ridgid 31657 1-1/2-Inch to 4 Inch Quick Acting Plastic/ Copper Tubing Cutter, etc.
Nice video Master Roger question what if a drainage check valve was in between the cleanout and the house how would u snake that can u run the snake through the check valve up into the house or no?
No you can’t. There should be an access to get to the other side.
Here in Wichita Kansas they allow us to use one step blue the brand weld on in certain towns around Wichita we have to use two step I like to use primer though because it clean the pipe
show the backfill getting stone stemmed all around supporting the pipe is just as important as the repair
What kind of pump set-up did you use. It seemed as if it was in a bucket. Thank you
Nice job! Where you put the whole piece and glue jointed the one end in, did the other end where you put the stainless over rubber connector, did you end up with a little over an inch gap for the connector to cover? Thanks, Tom
Eww
Nice video....not sure if that was water pumped onto the street...maybe raw sewage...?😅
Lol I had the same reaction Rodger🤣🤣🤣WTF indeed
its cool yall are in texas im like 20 minutes away
Marco Russo where at? We are in Richardson.
Roger Wakefield I'm in Plano sir! I might stop by to fill out a job application
I prefer keeping the coupling in the dirt. Same as stubbing out into the sleeve when roughing inside to out.
They make t’s that go both ways with out needing two long Ty’s
If code allows it. At the end of the day, you gotta do what the inspector wants.
The way you made the two way clean out is the only UPC acceptable way.
We're currently trying to transition to pvc. Currently using abs
Do you like PVC better?
My only suggestion is to have them in Christie boxes instead of pipes coming out of the ground. But good job!
ya lost me in the pipe of water...
the roots..
and the measurements. .
I'll need to rewind tp catch "the leak"... nice work👍👍
Marks on a simple reduction sleeve... yeah, right. ^^
Hey Roger, are you trying to put a champfered end on the pipes. I believe there is a tool to do that size of pipe. Not sure if the have it where you are , I'm up in Canada.
Why did you use the rubber gasket on the one end versus a pvc slip coupling? Rubber allows for misalignment?
How do you make the letters face up, on a vertical pipe? Also, no safety glasses? Also, how are your cloths and shoes still so clean after working in that mudhole?
I recently had TLC replace our furnace . It was an older home so there was no easy access to run the water line outside. Normally, they poke a small hole in wall of house to access outside terminating end for water line. They instead, drilled a smaller hole, about 1/2 inch, at centerline, top side, & in front of a two-way section of waste line in our attic, then stuck a flexible PVC water waste line from our furnace condensate pump, in it. Is there any issues long term you can see with this ? Its a private home, not a complex. They didnt use any sealant of any kind. Should we use some silicone around the flex pvc pipe thats pushed into the PVC pipe, its a fairly tight fit, & again is drilled on the centerline , on top. Thanks in advance @RogerWakefield
Can I ask why you used the clamp on the side going towards the street? I don’t know anything about plumbing and I’m learning a lot from your channel.
Great fucken job
I sure hope that's not the first time you met face-to-face with that customer
Ok I would have been done already oh that’s right some folks get paid by the hour lol.
What did you bed that pipe in?
Did you have that green thing in the pipe for any reason while you were cutting?
Let me come work for you seem cool and easy going 😎
Okay I clean the shavings off my schedule 40 drain do I need to be rheeming it?
what is the purple paint for? We don´t use that in my country
You need a kreg work station to get everything ready while standing up 😅
Nha plumbers don’t need that. Only a pipe vice for threading shit together.
Hopefully someone sees this. I’ve been plumbing for a little while and I’ve never seen it installed a two way clean out here on the Idaho Washington border. Is there specific codes that require it in Texas and other places?
Depending on what state you are in they have different codes, you will have to look up the UPC for your state.
They make a two way cleanout fitting we use them all the time
I was wondering if you could give me some knowledge about water heaters, I just bought a home and it has natural gas water heater but the home uses propane, I have asked a couple of people and they told me that I can just buy a natural gas water heater and have a plumber replace a little valve so I can use it with propane, but then there’s other guys that say that water heaters aren’t made the same anymore so you can’t replace that little valve and that now i have to buy the whole controller and burner kit so i can use propane, Is this true? Is there anything else I can do or do I just have to buy a propane water heater?
Both water heaters are totally different even though they look exactly the same (Natural gas/LP). Just use this water heater until stops working (take a look at the sticker serial # it tells you when it was made). Propane water heater are more expensive than natural gas water heaters, Propane gas is different than natural gas. Are you in Texas?
What kind of coupling was that.
All shielded couplings we use aren't slip on. Only slip banded couplings we have are rubber 2 band fernco couplings.
That was what's known as a husky band.
Thanks. The husky bands i use have a spacer like the no hubs.
First time. Seeing a slip version.
It is actually a sheer coupling. It is a 4”CT/Fernco with a stainless steel band. They are fantastic!!!
They're called Cross Facing clean outs
Forst thing is you spoke of.inspectors. Is this rule for each area or just some areas? The reason I ask is inspectors in my area seem not to care what anyone does and some landlords get away with a lot.
The second thing or question is I noticed a line coming out of the ground. I not q tradesman but is not everything suppose to be under a frost line so it does freeze or get cold and break? Or can some things be above this frost line amd be fine?
Do we need a 2 way clean out in Texas
I thought the old guy from Orange County choppers finally got a job.
So that's what those caps sticking out of the ground are for? We have one of those caps on each side of our house.
I enjoyed all the great info and examples. You did awesome showing me a "how to" video and now I have confidence to do this myself. In response to the video production, please lower the music volume next time... Thank you!
Thanks for the kind words and feedback Mr. Didier...will do!
