Badger 5 / 5XP should be banned. It's well known for damaging kitchen cabinets by leaking after 5-10 years. I've lost count of how many cabinets I've seen damaged by these.

The math might seem onerous for a 2” chunk of PVC, but it it’s an 8” cast iron rain drain and it’s 20 feet in the air, doing the math makes a lot more sense.

I enjoyed the video. There are those that say drain, those that say never drain. If youre going to drain it, you need to move fast. Anyone thats ever drained a bucket after flushing supply lines knows that sediment is heavier by far than water. My solution is simple. Take your (assuming you have one) trusty 3/4 gas line leak pressure gauge, hook it up to the cold. With your handy dandy air compressor, blast SOME air, in bursts, using your pressure gauge as a guide. Usually it wont hold pressure. If it does, youre doing it wrong or there is a major problem. Air pressure is stronger than water as it reacts differently via the rates of insertion and the forces at play. Specific gravity, etc and wont go into all that. The air, in my experience, will continually stir the sediment, whilst evacuate the water.

Hey roger, I was a maintenance technician for a number of years but recently really wanted to push for licensure. I am working a commercial buildings repair and maintenance job and trying to fullfill multi trades work hours for a plumbing and electrical license. I have achieved the basics low pressure boiler operator, epa 608 and working on mechanics license for hvac heating and cooling. I understand becoming a journeymen in both plumbing and electrical at the same time will take twice as long but i really love repairing commercial buildings. Is this a good method or is it just overcomplicating things? I love maintenance and repair and enjoy the variation of work. Also as far as learning goes i have some really knowledgeable coworkers training me

I think you missed a step. Every time I've set a toilet, put the ring down on the bolts, then apply my XXX pounds to seat the toilet, then bolt it down. Perhaps you could duplicate that by using a 1/4" steel disc so there is no disfigurement of the clear plastic, and uniformly torque the bolts to the same measurement

You and a few comments suggest that no seal would face 25 lbs pressure, but it makes me wonder. How much pressure do we exert when we have to plunge a tough stoppage? We know water doesn't compress so somethings got to give, right? I do maintenance in LTC facilities, and often use a vigorous back and forth action just to loosen it up. I know the plunger's not a perfect seal so that's some relief but it never occurred to me until now that I might be stressing the seal?

Fernco Pow-r wrap for the galvanized if homeowner is dead set against replacing it. Used to think it was hack, and kinda is. But seen it used to repair a 60" water main and still holding to this day.
