    What constitutes a small house depends upon one's point of view.....
    Average house sizes vary around the world: Australia = 214m2, US = 201m2, Germany = 109m2, Spain = 97m2, UK = 76m2, China = 60m2.
    So how small is small?

    • @JMFSpike
      @JMFSpike Před 2 lety +31

      That was the first thing that came to my mind when watching this. Pie shaped is not so bad because it widens out. A skinny house between two bigger buildings would be just fine, but what if it's not between buildings? It better be made of brick! But even then, if it's really tall it'd still be a concern. If you're going to do something crazy like that, you should definitely make sure you do it somewhere where natural disasters are almost completely nonexistent. You'd have to live in a valley to eliminate the Tornado risk though.

    @thomasarussellsr Před 2 lety +5

    Well, my approximately 200 year old L&N Railroad bunk house is 17 feet by 45 feet two stories with now enclosed two story porch along one side. So, it is smaller inside than it looks outside as you drive by. Still, with all the interior doors lined up along one side on the first floor, shotgun house style, the rooms are of a decent size. The single bathroom was cut out of the rear room when it was added, making that room smaller. And the stairs to the second floor are exterior to the upstairs porch, which as I said is now enclosed. All the upstairs rooms have separate entrances off the porch, but also doors between the three rooms. Non of the second floor has electrical outlets yet. This old house cost me $23,900 and will need plenty of repair and remodel to bring it up to modern standards, but it will likely be worth more on the modern market than I will have in it when it is done. Worthy investment, I think.

      Those narrow houses in London have an interesting history.
      They date back to the times when houses needed to have rear access for the bin men and fire department. Their was a limit to the length of the alleyway running behind the houses, so you quite often found them on a long terrace.
      Some were full width, while others has the rooms from an adjoining house extended over the gap above first floor level.
      In streets where the ground floors were shops, they also provided access via the alleyway for deliveries and for people living above the shops, often by a narrow stone staircase incorporated in the shops rear single story storeroom and staff toilet area. Since these narrow staircases had brick walls on either side and were open at the top (all part of fire escape regulations), they could completely fill with snow blowing off the flat roof of the shops rear extension. In later years, the side walls of the extension were raised a few feet above the roof to prevent this from happening.

    The skinny homes not sandwiched between other buildings look like a strong gust of wind would knock them over.
    Then all the ones that go up to make the necessary space is way to many stairs for my liking. Not mention the ridiculous prices. The $113,000 home isn’t too bad.
