- I eat at and review the New York City location of Au Cheval and their famous burger, which is considered to be one of the best in NYC and the country. The original restaurant opened in Chicago during 2012, while the New York location opened in 2019 in the Tribeca neighborhood of Manhattan. For dessert, I eat at Morgenstern's BANANAS, which is a dairy-free soft serve ice cream shop.

Looks like a fantastic burger, and it better be for that price! A runny egg yolk and beef just go together so well. However, the reservation fee and time limit make the place a total turn off for me. But, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Dessert looked good, even though it was "free of fun"😂(and I totally agree!) Listen, not one, no one gets out alive. While we are on this little rock in space, make the best of it and enjoy everything you can!
Absolutely! Yeah, that was a really special burger. It was annoying dealing with that reservation fee and the dining time limit. Next time, I'll just sit at the counter. It never got too crowded anyways. Indeed, the dessert was tasty, but I still prefer ice cream with dairy. Overall, despite the issues, I made the best of it that evening.

I wonder if the time limit applies to everyone, or perhaps to CZcamsrs alone? I like the use of voice over narration to avoid background noise and possible disruption to other customers. Great videos from a new subscriber.
Thank you! I appreciate it. I've been to other restaurants before where there is a time limit. I think it might be because they have tables reserved at later times and I had to be out before those guests arrived. Next time, I'll just sit at the counter.

I finally came back today after almost 4 yrs. Was here the Friday before the city shut done for covid in 2020 and I honestly thought they didn't make it through. The Mac and cheese was AMAZING!!!!!!! with the chunks of bacon....OMG!! The first bite of the hamburger took me back and it was so good. The fries were very hot and fresh. Didn't have room for dessert but we'll be back. Yes we paid for the reservation and it was worth it since it was very busy and we were seated immediately.

All of his videos are awesome. Yeah, this restaurant needs to figure out reservations… The one in Chicago doesn’t take them, so you have to wait for hours, and the one New York charges… helps build up the prestige I suppose

Have you had the chance to eat at 4 Charles yet? I know they only have reservations for parties of 2, 4, and 6. So you may have to try to do a walk in at 5pm- which I have heard is possible

Love your videos, keep it up! So I have been to Minetta many times and the black label is my favorite. Unfortunately I hadn't really gotten around to try other places yet but I see you have been to a few other burger places in NYC, curious how would you rank them thus far?
Thank you! So far Minetta's black label burger is my clear favorite, but then it gets sort of tricky ranking them. I think Au Cheval might be my number two followed by Raoul's for number three. The Emmy burger at Emily would come in 4th and Peter Luger's burger would probably be my fifth favorite. However, I think those rankings could change just based on what I have a taste for from one day to the next.

Ate there this past weekend. The burger was great, of course. The rest of the brunch menu was kind of boring though. Lunch menu is only on weekdays unfortunately because I saw a few things I wanted to try. We really liked the griddled blueberry muffin as a brunch appetizer.
I haven't been to either the NYC or Chicago location for brunch, but yeah, I would prefer their lunch/dinner menu instead.

You need to try White House in Atlantic City, NJ. Great burger subs. They also have a great Italian Sub and other subs as well. Can't remember if it's cash only. Love the videos!

Oh man, for the same amount I can have 5 my fav meals with my friends : beef pad see ew, beef pad Thai, Thai boat noodle soup, beef noodle soup and beef masaman curry .... 😊😊
Yeah, you can get a lot of great food for that price, which made me cringe a little knowing I spent that on just a burger and fries. Thankfully, it was at least an amazing burger!
This video makes me miss Australian burgers. Au Cheval seems a smaller version of a regular average Australian burger at any take out joint, although the runny yolk is always considered poor form on a burger, it must be cooked hard.
That's definitely a cultural difference. Hardly anyone here would want an egg that was hard.

That looks much grander than the burgers at Small Cheval! Too bad you didn't have time for dessert, but at least you got to visit a fun place called Bananas.
Yeah, it's on a much higher level than Small Cheval and subsequently, comes with a much higher price tag, but it's worth it!
So- was it Cheddar cheese (as stated earlier) or American....which you said in your taste description?
The restaurant calls it American cheddar. I know, I can see how it could be confusing.
The burger looked delicious but I just can't see myself paying $30 for a burger...lol, especially when one is on a budget & trying to save money. Maybe one day I'll bite knowing life is short. US tip system is crazy and disgusting, if I lived in the US it would form me to just order food home because for that tip you can have 1 more full meal in most of the places
The US is unfortunately pretty expensive especially in NYC.
It's a good burger, but also the most overhyped in NY. Ive had it 4x thinking the next one would hit like it looks. Go to Minetta for a best burger candidate. Brindle room is amazing too. (Slightly cheaper and still amazing)
Fair enough. The black label burger at Minetta Tavern is still my favorite, but I haven't been to the Brindle Room yet.
James I hear you on those lame Nickel and dime fees, the only $2.50 fee worth paying is the gilt bar in Chicago.

So I know that the name refers to the egg served on the burger, but you still might have to twist my arm to get me to have a burger at a place named after a horse.
Having said that, while I have yet to go to a new place because of your recommendation, you have in the past given good reviews to more than one place that I know and like, so I think it's safe for me to follow your taste.😃
I remember 30 or 40 years ago when one of the Boulud restaurants first charged $20 or $25 for a burger and there was outrage and amazement... now I suppose an haute cuisine gourmet burger is probably $50 or more... actually, you would pay well over $20 now for a burger at P.J. Clarke's. Did I also see fried bologna on the menu at Au Cheval? That sounds interesting. I suppose if you had a burger and also fried bologna that would be the "daily double".

Absolutely! Pricing for burgers has just gone up and up. I feel like to purchase a top tier burger these days one pays almost as much as what a fine steak used to cost.

I have. I went there back in 2021 for my birthday and made a video about it. I definitely enjoyed my meal there.

The burger without the egg and bacon was $21.95, but with the two toppings it came to $31.85. My fries were $11.95, which were definitely overpriced. With tax and tip, my dinner came to about $60, which wasn't cheap. Thankfully that burger was incredible!

The burger looks incredible, and I would be tempted to order the bacon even though I haven't had any bacon for 5 years. You said the cheese was sharp cheddar, and later you said it was American cheese. Which one? I cannot stand that most places use American cheese that is all chemicals and not too tasty. For a pricey burger, I think blue cheese, goat cheese or a strong aged cheddar should be used. The fries did not look like anything special. The best fries have the skins on them and cut inside the restaurant.
It was an amazing burger and that bacon was some of the best that I've ever had! The cheese is American cheddar, which is how the restaurant describes it on the menu.
au cheval doesnt mean to put an egg on it. "Cheval" means "horse", and "Au" can be translated to "at". So you can translate it as : At the Horse. Horse being the name of the restaurant. A bit weird when you try to translate it I wont lie..

I've heard some chefs say that multiple patty burgers shouldn't be served on brioche buns because the buns can't take all the liquid that comes out after the 3rd or 4th bite, and it all degenerates into a sloppy mess thereafter. Lots of people seem to like it, though.
Thank you! Yeah, it's hard to say. I like the flavor of a brioche bun and I don't mind a bit of a mess as long as things taste good, but at the same time, it's nice not having to reach for a napkin with every bite.
You don't cut burgers in half toeat them ! You eat it whole - sloppy or not. Cutting it is as unnecessary as this recent stupid custom of toasting with food.
