Icelandic is a very hard language to pronounce for most foreigners, would you people expect them to be bilingual in what...two training weeks?
when Homer Simpson sounds better than this, then you know they haven't done their homework.

Unfortunately, the blu ray releases don't have any dubbing in any Scandinavian languages. What a let down.

@@fancypigeon1031 For people who want to learn a Scandinavian language outside of Scandinavia. Vikings did not speak Modern English in real life, but a Scandinavian language, so it would be nice to have that authenticity.
in the series they portray the english anglosaxons and the norse as not being able to understand each others languages but back then old english and old norse were much more intelligible
In the show they sound fairly different, just with some similar vocabulary. But I think this can explain how characters learn the other language pretty quickly.
As a swede it is really fun that I can understand the gist of what they’re saying in Old Norse, “Hvat siger thu” is “vad säger du” really similar
in german it's "was sagst du" ^^
I miss the first two seasons of Vikings when it was more about action and historical accuracy, and less about drama.
1 and 2 seasons were so primitive and monotone. But further seasons were full of fantasy
I agree on some level, but we must also remember that a lot of the story of Ragnar is legend and myth. The show is about him and his stories, it’s not supposed to be a historical telling of the period.
They need to work on their "hrynjandi" (speech-rythm), as an Icelander and hearing the actors speak, it really does sound a little too much like a newbie-foreigner learning Icelandic when they speak.

I think it is very cool that they speak in almost "native" norse language. I feel that Iceland is like Norway's son? The fact that the Vikings traveled from Norway's coasts, and that they discovered and populated Iceland which were uninhabited at the time.
Im watching this because my Dungeons and Dragons group, just landed on a viking land, and i needed to check out some viking speak. This vas helpful..

Btw, snara means “noose” or possibly “hunting trap made with rope”. Trap (in ambush/fighting sense) would be gildra. He would probably say “gildra!” or “við lentum í gildru”

Jesus people, stop complaining already. It is not their native language, how can you expect them to speak it perfectly? Especially Icelandic, which is terribly hard. Think a little. I would like to see you, speaking I don't know, let's say Polish, while your native language is Swedish. Will you speak it perfectly? Of course not, even if you're training for two weeks like a comment said so below, it is not enough. Taking the accent of a language takes months or years even. I'm French and they butcher my language even more than yours in movies and tv shows, I know what that feels like because i'm always like "They couldn't train more? It's not that hard" but I didn't stop to watch a movie or show because of that. Grow up people.
When she said "Kill them all" for some reason the accent sounded so flawless to me and I've never really heard any nordic accents outside of video games

I tried watching this show once. But I heard them butcher my language so bad that I had to stop.Old norse and icelandic are pretty much the same thing with some changes but we can still read it (and speak it if we wish to, if you know the changes that is). This should at least have been practiced more, sounds horrible
Felix G-V Actually, I'm studying Japanese and I lived there for a year last year, not that it is of any matter to you. Also, being a fan of a show that is in another language doesn't mean you have to be able to speak it. But if you're an actor and are supposed to speak another language in the show, at least try to speak it well. I get that they can't be perfect, because it's so different from English, but I feel like they weren't even trying. But everyone has their opinion and I respect that.

They go off what they're told to do by the producers and heads. You can do all the practicing you want, but it comes down to what they say. Can't really blame them for that. He even says in this clip that he chose specific vowels to bring them all together so it sounds like they're from the same part. I'd assume that means some people were simply better at it and it significantly put off from the actors who didn't, so that was the "middle" ground.
well obviously they didnt speak at all like icelanders pronounce their words today, living isolated on an Island makes the dialect go crazy really fast. Can also be heard on inbreed islands outside sweden.
You cant speak like an icelander today and expect to find out how they sounded back then, better go back and see how a modern sweden, norweigan or dane speaks today.. thatd be more accurate, so they are doing it right.

Guys , guys ,guys. Do you know why everyone is writing its close to Swedish , Norway and Danmark? Its because The Scandinavia Hade almost the same language. It was not big differences at all back in the day. The People from Sweden understood The Guys from Norway better than we do today.

Hvað segir hún: icelandic
Vad hon säger: swedish
Hva sier hun: norwegian
Dude don't be ignorant. Hvað segir hún in Icelandic is Hvad siger hun in Danish. Is it a revelation - no because the languages are related.

barely we can read old norse in fact we do it in school no not at collage(well also there) or university(and there as well) but in elementary school since we read the icelandic sagas in the original language but generally the teacher will have to help with a few words

Not very similar but understandable if you know Icelandic. Standard Norwegian is basically just watered down Danish with a Norwegian twist. The dialects we have are what we consider true Norwegian.

As a Dane that sounds Swedish, but danish developed differently.

I agree with those who say it does not seem that they worked at learning the language so well. I worked with a man from Iceland back in 98-2002 and maybe it was just him personally but his speaking was much more what I would call clipped sounding and hard rolls at the ends of words. Borderline gutteral sounding. I had imagined from that that Old Norse may have sounded the same especially when men spoke it.
It's nothing to do with learning the language and everything to do with what the actors are told to do by coaches, directors, and other heads.
I know a few words of modern Icelandic and this is very similar!

The only sentence in Icelandic you will ever need is "þungur hnífur", just like "ska vi hångla?" is the only Swedish. Language lesson closed.

Vstar0033 because the Icelandic language and accent almost hasn't changed for centuries and with only the exception of a few new words into our language. And if my memory is right the swedish language came after the old norse so.. idk its just that these are american actors (or english speaking actors over all) and you can clearly see them butchering the language giving it a different sound and just plain sounding off.
I get it, its hard but all im saying is that they just need to work on it.

I'm confused by this show. I haven't watched it yet but it sounds like sometimes the actors are sporting some sort of accent and other times it sounds like they have American accents??? is that intentional or just on the acting/directing?
They speak English with American accents most of the time but when they are around peoples that speak a different language they can not it shows them speaking both in different languages and sometimes will fade into English if they can understand each other and speak there own languages. Atleast that's what I've assumed haha
I understood a bit of the old French spoken by Emperor Charles and his daughter. Not a lot though, just a word here and there.

Swedish and Danish are evolved from old East Norse, whereas Norwegian and Icelandic come from old West Norse. Icelandic is closer in terms of grammar, yes. Old Norse also had many dialects that varied from place to place, and the Old Norse we know comes from Iceland at the end of the Viking Era.
