The Baldwin SF-10 is regarded as one of the great American semi-concert grand pianos along with Steinway B and Mason & Hamlin BB. It features a full German Renner action and unique design elements such as Baldwin’s patented Accu-just hitch pins which enhances tone.
This piano was made when Baldwin was at the peak of their manufacturing. The list of Baldwin artists at that time included many of the most distinguished musicians in the world from Leonard Bernstein to Dave Brubeck.
This piano is all original and has been lovingly cared for and shows almost no signs of wear. So everything is in like new condition.
My personal piano is a Baldwin SF-10 from the same era which I inherited from my father, Morton Estrin who was also a Baldwin artist.
What makes the Baldwin SF-10 and the larger SD-10 9-foot concert grand so special is the unique blend of warmth and clarity in the tone bridging the best elements of American and German piano engineering since Baldwin owned the great German piano company Bechstein at that time.
The action is velvety smooth for quick and precise control of tone and volume. The scale design is incredibly even from register to register. The bass is full and rich, and the treble seems to sustain forever! We have sold a good number of SF-10’s over the years and this is one of the finest we have had. It is a great benefit to have a piano that is in such fine condition with the stability you get from age. If you are after the ultimate piano for your home, one suitable for all styles of music, this is up there with any piano of its size at any price. It makes a great solo instrument and blends beautifully with other instruments as well. With proper care, this piano will enrich generations to come.
I’m fortunate to own 2 of these beautiful pianos. Every piano tuner/technician has had ultimate respect and a glowing confirmation of their top quality. One of my best decisions.
The tone is beyond remarkable!! Magnificent piano! and of course, played exceptionally well by the maestro!
When Liberace was on his tours, the SF10 Baldwin was always specified in the rider. The roadies had flats made of skin-ply covered with sequins that precisely fit the contours of this model. Those flats completely covered the black finish so the audience always thought of it as Liberace's special sequined piano.
I remember a visit to the Baldwin piano factory during a sponsored visit. I think it was a ND10 grand piano that we heard demonstrated at the end. A truly brilliant tone.
The SF-10 is my piano (peculiarly, purchased from a Steinway artist). One of the features that I love about it besides what you mention, was once an option but later became standard: installation of a Renner action (the same with the SD-10s). This is the same action used in Bosendorfers and Bechsteins, so the SF-10 was the most affordable manner to get a Renner action (which I LOVE!).
Robert, I really enjoyed hearing you play bits of some of my favorite pieces on this SF-10. So I bookmarked this on my computer so I could listen to it again! Thank you!
I have played/heard nearly every piano from every decade since 1920. imho, The Baldwin of this time remain the best for play and sound. Of course, Robert is a virtuoso and knows how to bring the best out of the piano.
He can make any piano sound great… has the perfect feel on the keys.
What a fantastic sound! This was when Baldwin owned Bechstein. They bought Bechstein to take control of their patients and owned them from 1963 to 1986. This Baldwin here is a result of the Marriage. Fantastic piano with such a unique sound. It is such a joy for a pianist to play!
uh, I cannot believe Bechstein had patients.
What? You can't believe Bechstein had Patients? sober up and reply.
do you hear noticeable action noise on this piano? I have a Baldwin L from the same period and the action noise is just ever so slightly noticeable.
I’d really love a follow up video from some owners about how much they love their new pianos.
I have an SD-10, I bought it brand new back in 1969/ 70 (#189644) - Lately I'm having a problem finding a piano technician here in Los Angeles , covid pandemic took my last tuner/tech.
I have some resources in LA. If you email me, I can help you connect with the right person: Robert@LivingPianos.com
As a subscriber for years this is about my favorite review....
Beautiful sounding piano. Someone will really enjoy it.
Wow! What a treasure.
Thanx, Maestro 🌹🌲🌹
What a video
Baldwin did make a very nice piano. They are a relative bargain, as people always chase Steinway.
Wouldnt this be called a parlor grand or 3/4 size piano¿ Does it have original ivory keys or plastic¿ Is it still for sale and what is the price¿ Thanks.
