  • Beautiful opera singer Kathleen Battle singing wonderfully the waltz "Voices of Spring" by Johann Strauss II written in 1882. This was in 1987 in Vienna. Conductor is Herbert von Karajan.
    "Frühlingsstimmen"
    Die Lerche in blaue Höh entschwebt,
    der Tauwind weht so lau;
    sein wonniger milder Hauch belebt
    und küßt das Feld, die Au.
    Der Frühling in holder Pracht erwacht,
    ah, alle Pein zu End mag sein,
    alles Leid, entflohn ist es weit!
    Schmerz wird milder, frohe Bilder,
    Glaub an Glück kehrt zurück;
    Sonnenschein, ah dringt nun ein,
    ah, alles lacht, ach, ach, erwacht!
    Da strömt auch der Liederquell,
    der zu lang schon schien zu schweigen;
    klingen hört dort wieder rein und hell
    süße Stimmen aus den Zweigen!
    Ah, leis' läßt die Nachtigall
    schon die ersten Töne hören,
    um die Kön'gin nicht zu stören,
    schweigt, ihr Sänger all!
    Voller schon klingt bald ihr süßer Ton.
    Ach ja bald, ah, ah ja bald!
    Ah, ah, ah, ah!
    1. Sang der Nachtigall, holder Klang,
    2. ah ja!
    3. Liebe durchglüht, ah, ah , ah,
    4. tönet das Lied, ah und der Laut,
    5. süß und traut, scheint auch Klagen zu tragen,
    6. ah ah wiegt das Herz in süße Träumerein,
    7. ah, ah, ah, ah, leise ein!
    Sehnsucht und Lust
    ah ah ah wohnt in der Brust,
    ah, wenn ihr Sang lockt so bang,
    funkelnd feme wie Sterne,
    ah ah zauberschimmernd wie des Mondes Strahl,
    ah ah ah ah wallt durchs Tal!
    Kaum will entschwinden die Nacht,
    Lerchensang frisch erwacht,
    ah, Licht kommt sie kunden,
    Schatten entschwinden! ah!
    Ah des Frühlings Stimmen klingen traut,
    ah ja, ah ja ah o süßer Laut,
    ah ah ah ah ach ja!
    (Special thanks to Peter)

    Battle has the purest tone of any soprano ever! what I love about her is that she never over sings a song, or over do it with huge notes. Battle realize that opera is not just about hitting the big note at the end or in the middle, but the whole song being sung with tone clarity and correct pitch. she is one of my favorites

      Being loud is important to be a heroine in some operas to some extent. But Katherine has her own characteristic in her voice, and her interpretation of Frühlingsstimmen is best in my mind. The cooperation of the conductor and the orchestra also make a difference. If the orchestra is too loud, it will destroy the beauty of Katherine's voice.

Too many times underrated due to gossip about her being difficult to get along with. True or untrue, it should never obscure the fact, what a magnificant soprano she is and belongs among the greats of all times.

    What I find puzzling about people who comment on the smallness of her voice is that Miss Battle sang at the MET for nearly 20 years to rave reviews and a following she still has to this day. I hardly believe she would've had the brilliant career she had if she were inaudible. Do you think the reviewers were sitting on stage? Miss Battle, in her prime, was the jewel of the MET and every other opera house she performed at, and her name on the billing practically guaranteed a sell out house. People don't flock to hear a singer that they can't actually hear. Make sense? Probably not to simple-minded, bandwagon riders. One last thing, do me a favor a post a video of you singing this piece at the Musikverein under Maestro Von Karajan. Not just anyone gets that opportunity, especially someone inaudible.

      Armon Golliday Small voices that are resonant and focused can be heard in the biggest houses. They don't flood the house, but simply carry easily above the orchestra. I have heard bigger voices that stop at the footlights because they don't have focus and resonance.

My teacher went party with battle, and he say she is a bitch. francis loa That's another thing I don't understand. Why do people care so much about her personality, when most will never have the opportunity to spend time with and get to know her? As a person who enjoys beautiful music, Miss Battle is doing me and the world quite the service by sharing her wonderful gifts. I can appreciate her for that. I've met her in person, and she was nothing but warm and gracious, so I take those stories with a grain of salt. Enjoy the voice and leave it at that.

      @serenaisdabomb Před 8 lety +2

      +VoiceVirtuoso "Why do people care so much about her personality, when most will never have the opportunity to spend time with and get to know her?" While it's still not clear why she was fired and if racism played a role, IF the stories are true, the reason is obvious: musicians work closely together and rely on each other, and it's very difficult to work with a jerk. Evidently, the incident that led to her firing was her insistence on having no one in the cast or orchestra watch her while she was singing. That's something that's *extremely* hard to work with.

    As a huge classical music fan, I can still maintain that Battle's voice, coloratura and delivery remain among the most seamless of generations (note the S). Certainly, like many perfectionists, she was reputed to be difficult to work with, but many overlook that she was even harder on herself than she was on others. Does this excuse any behavioural indiscretions? Certainly not, but like all of us, she was profoundly human and always wanted to look, sound and be her best for herself and for the music. What of John Eliot Gardiner? One of the finest conductors of the last 100 years who revolutionised early music performance and interpretation...and, according to close sources, a monster in the rehearsal room. People who aspire for perfection often have bouts of hubris - not only in honour of themselves, but also because they see a clear standard they believe is achievable and they want those around them to attain it. Anything else, to them, is failure. The same applies in other fields - medicine, law, literature. The fact is, brilliant people are often quite difficult. To call them divas would be an oversimplification.
    As to those who make all this fuss about her not being retained at the Met, remember she's not the first leading opera singer to have had this experience. Pavarotti also comes to mind... At the end of the day, we cannot hypocritically sit in our seats, listen to the music of these artists and shred their lives for being more flawed than their vocal production. Let's embrace them, be grateful for them and cherish the recordings they have left us. Small voice, big voice who cares? Voices aren't buildings so they needn't impress with their sheer noise. For a seasoned listener, range, pitch, line, breath, colour and ring matter infinitely more. Little surprise that so many young singers break their voices early in many supposed leading music schools - all trying to be louder and bigger than they were ever meant to be. It isn't the size of the voice that matters. It's what the singer achieves with his or her gift. This remains one of the best performances ever of this piece and shall remain thus for decades, if not centuries.
    As to those who claim the Met stopped or slowed her career: rubbish. Miss Battle went on to be one of the greatest recording and concert artists of our time. By the time she was dismissed at the Met, she was already beyond her prime anyway. We mustn't forget that the highest voices, however well maintained, are the first to lose their sparkle. They are shooting stars.... I have to thank Kathleen Battle for sharing her immense gift and artistry with us. I have been listening to her for over 20 years and her voice still brightens my day.

    She sings this as a consummate musician. Not as just a 'singer'. She has so much in her technical arsenal that you do not hear any efforts of 'singing', but pure music. There are so many details that most people would never even notice--very important stylistic nuances. On top of all that she of course has a beautiful, beautiful voice. This is musicianship far beyond any other rendition I have ever heard. I wish I had been in Vienna in 1987!

    and elegant. She must be the best soprano. Her voice
    has profound spiritual
    something special.

    Yes Alan Long I agree with you. My teacher would not accept me until she heard me sing something of substance of real opera. She cried when I sang this same piece to her. I am also black, this was in early 1990's.

    Que increible soprano, verdadera ligera, me basta con la sonrisa del sublime Karajan, que la contempla asombrado. Para los que no saben nada de musica, deben de saber que las ligeras no poseen el volumen de las dramaticas o liricas, pero la voz corre perfectamente por todo el teatro, debido a la correcta emision in maschera. La Battle, es de las mejores de todos los tiempos.
