yup! ....they both had the same themes of questioning reality and if we were in a simulation designed by a superior but non-human intelligence with our memories wiped,.. do humans have reality testing instincts that would eventually lead us to figure it out?
...and i say, thats hollywood magic. I believe there is a possibility we live in a simulation but any intelligence sophisticated enough to put us in it in the first place would reasonably be also intuitive enough about human behavior to design a sim that would not be beyond our intellect to discover but alien to our nature to accept.
Even the sharpest of us are far too wrapped up in ourselves to see beyond the constructs that we ourselves voluntarily live in to survive.

the Stranger's dialogue is odd. Its made known that the human can tune but dont know how thats possible, and mr Hand only offers "Sometimes they act erratic" which equates waking up with extraordinary powers as a rare but not unheard of quirk. Mr Book then states that its critical to find and capture Murdock, but his plan is to send just 4 strangers to search the entire city while the rest of them , i dont know, go back to working the assembly line of forged documents and random nick-nacks...

One of the most underrated Sci-fi films of the 90s! A cult classic! Alex Proyas also made The Crow with Brandon Lee (R.I.P) also a cult classic! Now they are remaking The Crow with Bill Skarsgard in the main role, I hope they will not remake this at the very least, this film stands on it's own and if you do want to explore more of this world then the sequel is the only right choice or don't make it at all. Even tho The Crow with Brandon is a magnificent action noir film it's still an adaptation of a popular graphic novel, so a re-imagining can be done just don't remake it beat for beat if you know what I mean, but Dark City is a completely original sci fi and should not be replicated.

Yes, massively ripped off by the matrix.
The agents demeanour, the clothes. These aliens are agents, manipulating the reality of humans, then the 'one' in this movie comes to the realisation that he can control the environment and defeat them.
Even or green colour gradient used in this alternate world. I saw this film 16 years ago and I remember how much had been copied.
This is what comes to mind, great film they both are. But matrix was heavily influenced.
