  • Fan recording of Elvis' opening show (and some others unknown to me) at Las Vegas, International, August 19th, 1974
Elvis sang many rare songs this night, and tried a different set list. For this reason, it was a special concert. However, the next night Elvis went back to his original, familiar track-list/songs, thinking the audience didn't take to the new material much.
Full track list of that night:
Big Boss Man / Proud Mary / Down In The Alley / Good Time Charlie Got The Blues / Never Been To Spain / It's Midnight / If You Talk In Your Sleep / I'm Leaving / Let Me Be There / Softly As I Leave You / If You Love Me, Let Me Know / Love Me Tender / Polk Salad Annie / Band Introductions / Promised Land / My Baby Left Me / Bridge Over Troubled Water / Fever / Hound Dog / Can't Help Falling In Love

His chameleon voice changed multiple times in his very very short life and career. He did have some great live recordings. ie.

      If I can dream, 68

WOW!!! I rarely comment on youtube but I have to for this concert. how refreshing to hear a mostly different set! if the fans would have enjoyed this more (like they should have) can you imagine what this may have done for him personally? im not saying he would have kicked his addiction cause its hard to do. I know because im a 15 year recovering alcoholic, but this could have been the start to just another great chapter in his career. can you imagine doing the same songs over and over and over. ugh! Elvis could sing anything! and I mean anything that he wanted in concert if he would have stuck with this. and the colonel screwed all of us by not working with Dolly Pardon so Elvis could record I will always love you!

the fans lack of reaction to this line up put him in a bad funk for the rest of 1974 and maybe the rest of his life. after this he was stuck singing the same old crap that he was tired of singing . i understand fans love his 50's stuff but damn the guy was 39 at this point he wasnt a kid he wanted to do things he wanted to do but the fans won but in reality they lost because 3 years later we lost the king

can you imagine what "else could have, and should have been"? this man could do anything! regardless of what others may think, he could act. wild in the country, and king creole for example. if the colonel would have let him be in "a star is born" like Streisand wanted, can you only imagine? maybe he could have used a little polishing up, but can you imagine? west side story I believe was also his for the taking but once again the col.! I have been a fan for 45 years. Elvis had it all and drugs and others greed took it away man. it still hurts to this day when I think of what all this man could have done! no matter what anyone says, and all opinions are welcome, no one, and I mean no 1 entertainer can even come close to the talent Elvis had. I don't care about who has more #1 hits, and all that crap. like someone said, (I think Richard Petty), records are meant to be broken. but there is nobody alive or gone that can or could hold a candle to Elvis. there is no doubt in my mind that he would have sold out any venue no matter how big it was. simon and Garfunkel had like 100,000 at central park. can you imagne if Elvis would have played there? he would have had to book more than 1 show! now...after reading this, just type in Elvis hurt 1977 or how great thou art, close your eyes, and tell me I'm wrong. batman forever, you are correct sir!!!

+Charles Dickens The Streisand film 'A Star Is Born' is shit (I'm a Streisand fan as well) and I'm glad Elvis didn't do it. He could have done must better than that film. He could certainly act, as he showed on the occasions when he was given a chance to. He rose to every challenge. Imagine him in a Dirty Harry kind of film.

Elvis tried at times to change up the sets but would receive a cold reception in doing so.
The fans wanted to hear his hits!!
Elvis would often ask the audience what songs do they want to hear and even place suggestion boxes for fans to write down their favorite songs of course they want to hear him sing his hit songs!
Fans would say since they paid for their ticket, they should hear what they want, and that's the hit songs!!
This still goes on today between artists and fans.
Can't judge his concerts from listening to albums, cds or CZcams because watching him live in person was Magnificent!!

I’m in the music business too on a smaller scale of course and i hate that mind set of if they pay for the tickets then they get to hear what they want. Nonsense!! The ticket fee is an exchange of money for a service which the artist wants to provide and it is the artist that decides the content not the audience. When you purchase a cinema ticket you don’t get to choose the ending of the film or decide on the script do you!

@@royevans1882 ~ I was just explaining that problem artists have that still exists today. The fans state that since they paid for a ticket (which today is very expensive) they want to hear their favorites. I could understand that, but they should realize they might hear something even better if they just let the singers/bands do their thang!!
Elvis loved and appreciated his fans & he knew to give em what they want to hear also, otherwise you won’t have an audience to sing to! It’s a crafty balancing act. But if you love your fans, you have to show your appreciation!

But I must say this concert was awesome. His voice was mind blowing. I think they are looping the available footage in some sections, but I still am enjoying this immensely. Wow, what a one in a million talent that has it all... Just too sexy and brilliant for words... Every minute every note of his way to short life... It's so funny when I hear people talk about FAT Elvis, even at his biggest, he was still pretty trim compared to today's standards. He always looked and sounded amazing to me!!! Unfortunately, he had to go back to the old songs due to the public that wanted the old ones. He opened his soul to the public when he sang Charlie´s Got The Blues "Play around and you´ll loose your wife" and he adds "I´ve already done that." "Play too long, you´ll loose your life". He said I almost did that!

I agree this is a special historic concert, really. Elvis thought that the audience’s reaction was muted and didn’t appreciate the changes in the concert’s repertoire, particularly in the beginning. I’m not sure he ever sung “Down In The Alley” again. He did sing “Good Time Charlie” a few other times curiously always omitting the line “I’ve got my pills to ease the pain, can’t find a thing to ease the rain”, he even omitted that line in his studio recording of the song six months prior in late ‘73. He returned just a day or two later to his tried and true repertoire and did it that way until the end. That being beginning the concert with C.C Rider, then I Got A Women/Amen etc, etc. I’ve had this soundboard recording for years, but it’s great to see the film footage and to see the beautiful ‘74 “Peacock Suit”. It’s also great to see him perform his current hit at the time “It’s Midnight”. I saw him in March of that year in Knoxville and he was fantastic! Long live..The King.

      @martyduncan2636 Před 4 lety +3

@audi presley I agree. For some reason, in late ‘74 and the first half of ‘75 Elvis did bend toward his recent single releases as far as his concert repertoire. Whereas in ‘72 and ‘73 he didn’t. It’s surprising, really, that he’d try a verbose song in concert like “T-R-O-U-B-L-E” and he also sang “Promised Land”, “Help Me” and “If You Talk In Your Sleep”. In ‘72 he rarely sang “Burning Love” even though it was a top 3 hit and he never performed “Separate Ways” or “Always On My Mind” in concert. He also never performed “Fool” in concert.

Denise C , yeah I agree . I think it's just the person that taped this . That's why you can't hear the audience. These days they can fix anything to make it sound the way you want it to . It might have been fixed that way so you could hear him sing . I know some of those concerts you can barely hear him from all of the screaming . It's out there on CD. You can't really tell how the audience responded on these soundboard concert albums. They were never meant to be released, so the audience wasn't miked or mixed into the soundboard. You're just hearing what the mikes from the band and Elvis' own handheld mike picked up.
Almost all of them sound like the audience was small or not very interested, which I can't believe was the case.

I kid about I wish Priscilla or Linda would have saved some DNA....they could have cloned Elivs and we all could have had our very own Elvis Presley. lol !! I'm just kidding.....!!!! I know there will only be one Elivs Presley and I still love him and miss him . So glad everyone shares their videos of Elivs' concerts . Thanks so much !!

I agree. It seems like sometimes “Bridge” just seemed to grow organically when they performed it and it was just magic. Elvis would play off the fabulous voices of The Stamps The Sweet Inspirations and of course Kathy Westmorland. The version they did on the fall of ‘’71 bootleg album from Boston was also a fabulous version as well, complete with an encore ending of the last verse

Sometimes his fans really shat on him. His first album after leaving the army Elvis Is Back is a fantastic record and represents the real Elvis at that time, yet it sold moderately well and the album that followed it G.I. Blues absolutely trounced it in terms of sales, selling over three times the amount. They didn't go to see his good films like Flaming Star, Wild In The Country and Follow That Dream, but went in droves to see fluff like Blue Hawaii. How many people in this crowd or people who claimed to be Elvis fans at the time bought his '70s studio albums? Many of his fans have a lot to answer for. They trapped him in fun but frothy films, they stopped him from making more studio albums in the '60s (They're literally the reason we have less Elvis music than we should have) and then they trapped him into singing Hound Dog every night. There are artists who are loved for who they are and their music and talents, and there are puppets (i.e. boy band members etc) who appeal to the shallow and those with no substance who are happy to be fed synthetic crap. Unfortunately, Elvis appealed/appeals to both. Elvis himself was more akin to the former, but the Colonel was more interested in the latter, with them being easier to please and therefore easier to sell to.

I know all about the conditions of the making of this video even do, Elvis is always superb no matter what. I just don't understand why Elvis taught that the audience didn't like most of the songs; this is ridiculous. I bought the album and I love all those songs and, I'm sad about Elvis not playing most of these songs in future concerts; is so ashamed and unfortunate. I love him, all his songs, and all his movies because, no matter what, HE makes everything worthwhile. Those envy nasty people related to the Oscar trophy should burn in hell not giving Elvis the Oscar; he is unique, perfect in everything, complete as an actor because he's beautiful, sings wonderfully anything (even opera), dances, acts perfectly any type of movie (comedy, drama, fights, espionage, the action of any kind, etc.) with grace, charming, knowledge, intelligence, humor, and sweetness. He is perfect, period. I love him now and forever even when he dies (I know for sure he is alive, I have friends in high positions keeping me posted); I pray to God to give him a very long life because he really is a KING AND A HUMAN BEING.

I wish he would have changed his setlists from time to time. this set is an excellent change of pace for him. The last couple of years seemed to be the same songs and same cities over and over again. It's really too bad that the colonel couldn't have left the states, if he could have then Elvis could have done world tours. I think they would have provided the challenge he seemed to need to keep himself in better shape.

The audience applause doesn't seem to be as responsive and maybe Elvis changed it back because he felt that the audience didn't feel like they were getting their money's worth. Wished he would've given it of a chance. All of these songs are now sung widely by ETA's all over the place.

I live him so much, since I bumped into him 73 in Vegas, by mistake. I was 16, and became obsessed with his music and collected everything I can. I've been to Graceland 3 times.
