My dad died in February at 88. He had one leg for 75 years, and he never ever let it slow him down. He inspired so many amputees to reach higher. He never used a handicap parking space, he said that they should be left for those who needed them. Motorcycles and even bicycles were a way of life for him.
You’re going to have dark days, but remember Red Lewis when you do. He’d inspire you as well, then take you fishing!!!

Dear Moto Giant, Don, my husband and I watch your channel all the time. We were so sad to hear about your accident. I broke my leg severely 11 years ago from a cycling accident and could not walk for months. I have a little idea of where you’re coming from. I’m also a nurse for 35 years and counting. You would be a fun patient. Please keep your spirits up! We need you! 🙏❤ Hang in there.

    Hey Don!
I’m watching your posts and reliving my recent motorcycle accident. I’m 66 and I've been riding all my life-motocross, track, adventure, long-distance travel. At the end of 2022, after returning from a motorcycle trip in Bhutan, I was starting a trip to Mexico and not more than 5 miles into my journey I was sideswiped and run over by a semi-truck, resulting in the loss of my lower left foot. It was my first accident on the road and I went big. No more shifting, but there are solutions for that.
Yeah, it sucks, but you figure it out and adapt. Now,other than the extra couple of minutes putting my leg on in the morning and adding more socks during the day to make up for the volume change in the residual limb, a year and a half later, life is pretty much back to where I left my left leg. I’m not back on the bike yet-my wife is a no at the moment-but in the last year, I’ve spent several weeks traveling Europe and just got back from the Baja 500, having a prosthetic has never stopped me.
I remember how uncertain everything seemed in the early days, but life is all about overcoming challenges. You seem to be a guy who doesn’t stay down.. you’ll be back doing everything you love.

I met a guy in front of a local restaurant a few dew days before i found your videos. He runs a motorcycle club that does a bunch of charity stuff. He was talking to my brother who was sitting on BMW GS. He was explaining how he likes to do all the BDR rides and has a bunch of the Butler maps. Says he currently rides a BMW K1600GT among a few other bikes and does long cross country rides. At the end of our conversation i looked down and noticed he had a prosthetic leg. I didnt think much of it at all. All I could tell is he seemed like a really nice, outgoing fella who loves riding and seeing the world. I thought to myself that I hope to have all the experience that this guy is now having riding around, talking to people, having adventures ✌🏼

Coke always makes you smile...you know, a coke and a smile. Growing up, my friend lost his leg above the knee to cancer at age 15. I was in tears, and when I went to Boston hospital, he was already in Pirate mode. Today he is a successful jeweler, goes skiing , has a wonderful wife and kids. He never let it slow him down. He was bicycling and fell and his prosthetic fell off and he couldn't stop laughing after the reaction of the lady who thought his leg fell off. Definitely see a counselor for this trauma you are going for. I went for 9 years after my daughter mom passed away when my daughter was 12. Sending some positive vibes. You have plenty of joy left in this world. Keep fighting. Oh, PT killed me today. I know they bring you to the limit and it doesn't stop. I've lost 35 unneeded weight and probably the healthiest I've been since my wife died. I quit working out after she passed away to take care of my daughter and infant daughter

Not that I enjoy seeing a guy suffer but your videos about the accident and injuries have been eye-opening. After riding off and on most of the past 50 years your fate and worse has been somewhere in my mind whenever riding. Fate caught up with me 2 years ago when a riding buddy side-swiped me after he lost control of his brand-new Harley. I was on my '06 Triumph Rocket 3 Classic. Other than mirrors and pegs being twisted out of position the bike was unscathed. My left leg's fibula snaped and like you I had a titanium rod and screws implanted. I am 76, the guy who ran into me was 91 at the time. Retired Marine and a very tough old dude. I still ride but think more often now about hanging up my helmets for good before something worse catches up to me. If I do I expect to be criticized by my friends as a sissy. I am probably more fearful of that happening than anything. The macho mentality can be a curse. Here's hoping your recovery goes well for you.

Hi from UK again. You are looking so much better than you were. You will get there & yes there’s gonna be some dark days ahead BUT take it one step at a time! The best man at my wedding got through the wedding having broke his leg a day or two before., he also went on to have a horrendous accident at work where power cables came down striking him on the head, the charge came out of one foot, injuring him along the way., somehow he got up & walked to the air ambulance! Was taken to a special burns hospital then local rehab. He has all his limbs & walks with two sticks, he has numb stiff fingers and his head wound has finally healed after 10 years. He used to ride bikes alongside us. He now has an adapted car, peddle trike, mobility scooter with a trailer he can add on. He has his own woodwork outbuilding and creates garden gates, benches, bird houses etc! He is living his life to the full albeit different to what he had but he is happy! He has always lived as a single man but has a female friend close by to cook & clean for him as her job. Sorry it’s a bit long winded BUT YOU will find a way!! Sending you all the best and I will keep watching! ❤xx

You've been an inspiration to many people over the years.Just hang in there. I gave motorcycling away in 1979 for a long time after a similar crash. Open face helmet, sandshoes, no suitable clothing. Mixed it with gravel and challenged a fence. Banged up pretty bad. Got back on the horse in 2003. Life sucks now but you'll find a way to move forward and get back to the freedom you've been enjoying. Doesn't hurt to consider our mortality and ask for divine help. Just a thought...got me through. From my own experience, actually ice climbing avalanche donkeys years ago, I’d say keep, talking. About it to anyone who’ll listen.
It’s part of the recovery of what they now call ptsd.
    Same for mild concussion.
Your brain has gone to mush, in order to stop you doing anything. At all.
    Survival mode.
Trust it, take your time: take a year to get your head round it.
Others have gone before you, and some in Rafah didn’t have any pain relief throughout from injury to amputation and back to the tent in refugee camp.!
I didn’t lose my foot when I had my injury; just all my top front teeth, aged 19.
    Anyway. Time. Give yourself time.
    Healing takes time.
    Takes its own time.
    My best to you…
Keep talking about it, it’s part of your rehab!

Your journey ahead will be the most challenging you have ever faced. There is no way it could be anything less. You will have good days and bad, but you will get through it. You will adapt and you will thrive, not because of your situation but because of who you are. From the little I have learned about you over the last few weeks it strikes me that you are someone who overcomes obstacles one at a time. It is one of your most admirable qualities and one you need to use now. The future will be what you make it and you will mould it one issue at a time. Thinking too far ahead isn’t helpful right now as the present is what is important.
Forgive the poor analogy, but you are at the stage of an infant again. You need to learn how to walk before you can run. Master the now and the future will sort itself. It’s of no practical help, but we are all cheering you on. Ignore those “wise” people advising you on past actions. Concentrate on the now.
I know you can do it and use those close to you as emotional support, use us if you need to. We love you and care about what you are going through. You engaged us with your adventures and this is just another one.
Stay strong and don’t look too far ahead. The future is fluid and you can make it one you want but based on your new reality. Watch some stories of the Invictus athletes and what helped them adjust to their new bodies after their injuries. Their experience may help you understand your own. ❤️

I don’t know you, but I feel your struggle. The physical part of recovery is difficult but our bodies will do what they can do - no more and no less. The other difficult part of recovery is mental. It’s impossible to maintain a positive mental attitude at every step in recovery. There will be ups and downs, and the “new normal” will be easy to accept at some times and virtually impossible to accept at other times. I feel for you, man, and wish you the best possible results going forward.

Some obstacles may seem numbered, it’s just a short time phase. The opportunity to divide and conquer and planning is now. Planning for your own daily post rehab physical routine to keep building yourself incrementally, can be simple and replicated to similar rehab routines. Plan how to make easier primary basic daily needs and routines, ongoing support funding should be wide open for a long time and encouraged you're lucky you have a large support community, consider expansion strategies, basically a brief plan of address each challenge area your anticipating. Hope that helps and drink lots of water, daily temps are up there. I think if you can think about how to make things easier per the above on a daily basis, each day will become easier and likely issue free. Cheers.

A friend of mine had a smash and he also lost his leg below the knee , one day , after learning to walk again he was feeling down about not riding again because of the high cost of converting his solo bike till I said I thought we could do the work ourselves for a fraction of the cost , thanks to the hope and positivity that gave him , amongst friends we completed the bike , including electric gear change and he was back on the road again and even camping , that was at the age of 64 , so there's a big future just waiting for you when you're ready

Even on your rough days, your more of a pleasant person than a lot of people are on their good days. Recovery is F'ing hard and it is a process that will take time. The people who do best at this type of rehab are the ones who buy into the process. Keep working at it. You will notice improvements, like you are doing way better with pain management than like a week ago. It is a battle, but you are a giant, so you got that going for you.

You are always going to have naysayers, what is done is done. Now, you are going to have live your life the best that you can, second guesting will not change one thing. Bad things, happens to good people everyday. Now, it's up to you to turn this around for yourself and your love ones. At the age of 36, I became disabled due to and auto accident, I went down a long dark road for 15 years, and almost lost everything. The ones that will suffer the most are your love ones. Always here for you, if you ever need anyone to talk too.

It gets overwhelming when reality comes crashing down upon one like a large rogue wave onto an Ocean beach. The feeling sucks. Know what you are experiencing is normal, and don't let it beat you up. Most likely there is a psychological article broken down into phases or steps that explains the mental battle you are experiencing. I know you will come through this and back to business as usual, or better. You'll figure it out.

I gave you the hint with the Honda DCT models and the rear brake operated by a lever on the left handlebar right after your accident. Hang in there and maybe this could be a target for you. It will take some time and effort, but maybe let it be a light for a goal in the future. There will be hard days, perfect days and everything in between. You have a lot of guys rooting for you, feeling with you and the motorcycle community loves your content no matter what. Time will come when you look back to these days and realize, they made you stronger. All the best!!

You are grieving a part of your body that’s not there anymore. Your emotions are very normal. Be patient with yourself express how you feel be open with your emotions and you’re gonna get through the other side. You’re gonna get frustrated. Sometimes you’re gonna cry you’re gonna be depressed, but you’re gonna make it you’ll get used to your prosthetic and life will go on if you pray ask God to give you strength every day physical therapy is tough. But you have to go through this. Thank you for sharing your life with us.

Hey man, here is another bit of positivity coming your way from me. We all make mistakes or compromises, and hindsight is always 20/20 after the fact.
Your experience has also made me realize that I should probably wear my enduro boots for regular rides. Seems a bit extreme thinking about it, but thinking about it a bit more... so does losing a foot!
    Stay strong, cheers 💪

Don, it's ok to get down, tomorrow is a new day. I drive a school bus and I have a kid that lost both legs below the knee in a car accident. He wears prosthetics and when he has pants on you would never know. He walks normally and runs for the track team!!
Yes, your life has changed but you will adapt, we all do when life throws a curve ball.

I've been watching your videos for the last several months prepping for the TAT. You've been an inspiration. Your posts about your accident was a wakeup for my brother and I. Even in this crazy time you are still helping others. The wife and I have both experienced life changing events, It took my wife 7 years to rehab. Those were tough times. Plenty of ups and downs. Today we are back to a new. normal and doing fine. Depression is going to be hanging at every corner. Its just part of the recovery. Keep posting, keep fighting and just accept the fact that people are going to want to help, let them... Hang in there.

Hang in their brother, good days and bad days will come but you will get through this and a new normal will follow, as well as peace with it all. You are not alone or the first or the last. You made it through another day today, and tomorrow will be another. You have more positives in your life than negatives. On another note, I road to work last night not in my usual work boots, but in my Alpinestar road boots and changed in my regular shoes in the break room. The whole process took a minute, and I wondered why I had not done this before. Have a great Saturday have a fizzy coke. BTW ... you look stronger each day.

I hope you get better soon! TN native here and I've been to Vanderbilt more than once. It's the best hospital in our state. Hearing your story made me start taking my boot situation more seriously. I wore my work boots for a long time when I first started riding. Now, I am starting to eye my current motorcycle boots and asking if they're up to par. I hope your story inspires others to be safe.

I have worked around rehab medicine in my past- my take away from that experience is people can adapt to their circumstances! It may take a little time, but you will be able to move forward with adaptive behaviors and expectations. In the final analysis this is a large bump in the road of life but you will endure! Carry on!
