True story. I was a huge fan of East Coast Hip Hop growing up in California. In the 90's it was not uncommon for rappers to complain about and/or make skits about hard it was for minorities or people of color to get a cab in New York. I used to think, "man these cats is trippin' it can't be THAT hard to get a cab in NYC, cabs are everywhere! I just didn't buy the story. Fast forward to the latter part of the decade and now I live in New York. Me and my man Lou went to China Town after work to hang out and the entire time Lou was like, "I don't know how we gonna get back to Brooklyn. Cab drivers are not going to pick up two minorities at this hour." Again I was very dismissive, just as I had been hearing the skits about cabbies on rap records. Then we started trying to hail cabs. We flagged down four cabbies, not one of them stopped to pick us up. My man was like, "see, I told you." The skits were true. There really was a fear on the part of cab drivers of picking up minority passengers. As fate would have it, two white girls came up to us and asked us to take their picture. We did, and as they walked away one of them turned around and said, "you guys must be having a hard time hailing a cab." We said, "yea we are." So this white chick signals for a cab and they pull over right away. She steps back and we get in the cab. The driver was not a happy camper but he had to take up back to BK. Smh.
I missed his message and got caught up in the late 90s. The Code of the streets: Do Crime = Do That Time. God Bless Guru. Live Long Premiere. Amazing...take heed youngsters.
