1: always bring a towel 2: don't pack a lot of clothes. You don't know what the weather will feel like where you're going so just pick up some clothes there. Plus they make great souvenirs. I wore my "Irish" shirts for years after visiting and they always gave me a spark of joy.
So, discounting Canada my first time international was... Japan. As part of the US Navy so I was there for 3 years. I was super worried despite loving all the awesome things that come from Japan. How different it was going to be, would I mispronounce everything and do the wrong things and be hated? How do I even use a Japanese toilet? But no, you all were pretty polite and I enjoyed everything: games, ramen, bread, hot can drink vending machines on cold days, fun places to explore. Even made friends somewhat but my stuff was stolen right when I got back so I lost all my contacts >.< I hope they are all doing okay. Japan and Australia are the two places I always want to go back to.
i'm from new york, and the only outside country i've ever been to was canada, specifically to montreal, when i was 13 or so. i don't remember being scared, but all of the olden pretty architecture was very nice and atmospheric to get enveloped in it was also really interesting to be surrounded by people speaking a different language for the first time. i had fun realising i'd picked up some french words from signs and stuff (like "sortie" for "exit", and hearing people say "deux" for "two" since our room was on the second floor) my japanese friend always tells me how much people in japan would love me for how quickly and naturally the language and social culture come to me. one day i'd like to be able to at least visit and show some people my impressions of a gruff tokyo streetkid or an old hands-clasping businessman
Ive never flew anywhere internationally, but i have taken a cruise ship before from louisiana to mexico. Its always cool being in another country, and i hope sometime before im 40 i can fly to japan for the first time.
