Cuz then tons of people/teams will go and say well what about this game and what about that game, there’s probably 100s of games decided on a missed call, look up the infield fly play from the 2012 wild card game, it’s not like they can change who won and make everyone redo those playoffs. This is coming from a tiger fan btw so it’s not like I dont wish he missed that call, it would be great for him to have his perfect game, but if we go back and change it now there will be big problems
If Galarraga didn’t get the 28th batter out at 1st base. Don’t change it to a perfect game. Because he got the 28th batter out. And at 1st base ..... should be changed to a perfect game.
It cannot be said too often how fortunate baseball was that it was Jim Joyce and Armando Galarraga in that situation on that night ten years ago. It was, if not the best, the most human moment I have ever witnessed on a baseball field, and that is entirely because of those two men. As we all know now, this was the tipping point in the debate over instant replay. It was not the moment that created the discussion, but it was the moment that changed enough minds within the game that a change was made. Importantly, had it not been for Joyce and Galarraga and the grace they displayed, replay almost certainly would have come into being anyway, but it would have been a much more tumultuous trip around the bases, if you will. If the debate had come from a place of anger instead of where it did, a place of understanding, it could have torn the game apart. The absence of any righteous indignation by either of the principal parties--something to which either of them could reasonably lay claim--gave an example to the game and its fans of how humans ought to conduct themselves when dealing with other humans. It's an extraordinarily important lesson that we all can learn from.
as a Tigers fan, I was never more proud of my team than how everyone conducted themselves during/after this game. ....and Jim Joyce was a solid umpire and one of the most decent men I've ever seen around the sports world. Kudos to them all.
I mean, the fact that absolutely none of us would have ever heard of Jim Joyce if he made this call right (despite his looong career) tells us that he was a good umpire, lol. And he had handled it well since.

I was about to say the same thing lol Joyce got swarmed by the whole Tigers dugout after the final out was called, wtf are they talking about no one confronted him, the whole baseball community was out to get Jim Joyce.

I appreciate Jim Joyce's sentiment here, but he's saying things that definitely aren't true. I suppose he could just be misremembering it, but I was there, 3rd row behind the 1st base dugout, and Jim Leyland absolutely DID say stuff to Jim Joyce when he came out immediately after the call. And Jim Leyland was absolutely NOT the only person to "unload" on Joyce after the last out. I just watched it again to make sure _my_ momories aren't wrong, and both of those things are plain as day. Being at the game, I couldn't hear the TV announcers, but watching the replay, even _they_ commented on the Tigers players getting in Jim Joyce's face and unloading on him after the last out. In fact, some of the Tigers players appeared so angry with him after the last out that the people around me in the stands were actually fearing for Joyce and commenting that they needed to get security out there to get him away from the players and off the field. Maybe Joyce is just wearing rose-colored glasses all these years later?
he chose to retire from the game, he had umpired American League from 1987 till the umpiring union merged with AL and NL to MLB in 2002 and till 2017 when he retired

Any intelligent person knows damn well that if any of these commenters were sitting next to Jim Joyce, *face to face,* and listening to him talk about this game, every one of them would act like a decent human being, shake Joyce's hand, and tell him it's ok, they've made mistakes too. But something about the internet makes otherwise decent human beings into complete and utter idiots.
Joyce was known as literally the best ump in the game. So happens that his one mistake was a big one. He’s no Angel Hernandez. The man owned up to it, where many umps/refs would not (looking at you NFL).
I still think it’s so weird how he makes a sudden initial motion to make the out call and changes his mind. Like, if it was that close, go with your first instinct. It was as if he didn’t want to be accused of being influenced by the situation.
If we go to an electronic strike zone, they should also have a robot hitting at the plate. Let's just take the human element completely out of sports? No humans, no mistakes

But that’s just my theory, he might have just not liked Armando or thought Armando wasn’t deserving of the accomplishment for some other reason, I don’t know. But I do know it was intentional. It simply the only explanation that makes sense.
WTF why is Jim Joyce talking about balls and strikes , he screwed up big time, and he knew it, why didn't he ask the home plate umpire if he saw it his foot was on the bag. But No, after the game was over and done then he realized he made one of the biggest errors of his life, I'm surprised they let him umpire the next game. In Detroit, but the worst part of the next game is when Gallaraga gave Jim Joyce the line up, what did Jim do. He hit him on the shoulder, so WTF was that suppose to mean, then later on Detroit gave Gallaraga a bet car, big freaking deal, if I was Gallaraga I would have tossed the keys into the stands to show the league F U, give me my perfect game
Ill be honest, for years ive had this "chip" on my shoulder becausr of this. But, i had something brought to my attention very recently; if you watch closely, from a 3rd base angle looking at 1st, when the ball first hits galarragas glove, he bobbles it, only very quickly, but none the less, he does. And as he bobbles the ball in that split second, the runner hits the bag. Point is, as much as i absolutely HATE to admit it, joyce most likely made the right call...
Joyce said the runner beat the throw, no mention of a bobble or snow one. He did not have the angle to see into the glove as the camera angle shows. It is among the worst calls in MLB history.
Actually, not true at all. Joyce was still considered by a lot of the players as the best umpire in baseball at the time. And was praised for how he owned up to his mistake.
I only like replay for homeruns...human error is part of the game.. all of the new rules Manfred has added are a cynical attempt to gain younger fans...
I feel sorry for Jim Joyce. The Detroit Tigers went out of their way to embarrass him by sending Galarraga out to home plate with the line-up card the next day!

Point is, as much as i absolutely HATE to admit it, joyce most likely made the right call...
you must have a really bad attention span
Joyce said the runner beat the throw, no mention of a bobble or snow one. He did not have the angle to see into the glove as the camera angle shows. It is among the worst calls in MLB history.
After what you did you should not have continued being a referee
I'm sorry but Jim Joyce is the second most hated umpire after Hernández.
Joe West??
@@jameshenry9037 Joe West is funny so nah
By who, exactly?
Actually, not true at all. Joyce was still considered by a lot of the players as the best umpire in baseball at the time. And was praised for how he owned up to his mistake.
Jim should never work in mlb
he’s retired dumbass. he stood up to his mistake.
Consistently noted, by players and coaches, as one of the best umpires in the game. Go cry in the corner
He was too old at the time. Should be an age limit. No old men.
What a horrible call
sucks he's still trying to get pub from this, he blew it, end of story
I only like replay for homeruns...human error is part of the game.. all of the new rules Manfred has added are a cynical attempt to gain younger fans...
Getting the call wrong isn’t part of the game.
M M yes it is. It is in every sport. We are human, we make mistakes. I bet a million dollars you can not do as well as a professional umpire.
Caleb Davenport almost every other sport has replay reviews... it’s okay to make sure they get the call right
I feel sorry for Jim Joyce. The Detroit Tigers went out of their way to embarrass him by sending Galarraga out to home plate with the line-up card the next day!
