    Here is another installment of the #FairmontProject rear suspension upgrades. In this installment I go over my struggles installing a panhard bar from Maximum Motorsports. Most of those issues came from the fact that my Fairmont isn't as straight as I would have liked it to be. I still get things sorted out in the end as you'll see in the video.
    That said, the video contains detailed information on how a panhard bar works, and how to install one onto a fox body Ford. In other words, if you're doing this on a Mustang from 79-92 you'll be following the same procedure. Or any other fox body for that matter.
    Special thanks to Jack Hindley and Kolton Sinclaire for all their help.

    At first I was a bit thrown off by the clickbait-y thumbnails and titles, but after your previous video I understand completely, anything to keep the channel going :)
    And the Fairmont videos are not getting boring, I still find them educational and fun. Keep doing what you think is best 👍

    • @aserta
      @aserta Před 7 lety +6

      I fully agree in this case as well. GoogTube is doing everything they can to please the queen (CEO) and her CZcams RED scheme. That includes forcing people out of their channels and in some cases jobs. Funny how we had to fight exactly this kind of thing years ago, but now, with their backs against the wall, we have to accommodate for it. It will certainly make things going forward (IE discerning the good ones from the bad ones) hard.

    • @akui88
      @akui88 Před 7 lety

      for some reason i though the title meant he was going to give advice on how to cut corners to get flaterate techs to improve their efficiency, like using a pry bar to reset brake calipers pistons instead of using a brake caliper tool.
      you know what i am saying?

    • @Rotming
      @Rotming Před 7 lety +7

      How are they clickbait-y ? does he not install panhard bar in this video ?
      aserta that is not why everyone on youtube is struggling, youtube RED has nothing to do with it, the fact that multiple advertisers are pulling their ads off is what is killing content creators

      You Tube has been losing a huge amount of money since it was started. Alphabet (Google) has been trying to fix that but it is struggling and still loses money. This whole set-up will end if they can't earn a profit.

      Hi Eric, you should break this long video into at least two or three separate videos. That increases your number of views and increases your revenue. I'm not a big fan of the Fairmont project but I do learn a few things. Thanks for posting. Take care and stay dirty.

    • @ericthecarguy
      @ericthecarguy  Před 7 lety +11

      I purposely didn't do that because I've had many complaints about the #FairmontProject dragging on too long. Also, my experience withe multiple part videos is that you loose a lot of viewers after the first episode. Thanks for your input.

    • @aussiebloke609
      @aussiebloke609 Před 7 lety +6

      I kinda like this being a longer video. It's a long job, and this reflects reality (closer to reality, anyway - I'm sure it took more than an hour, though!) It beats waiting a week for part 2, then trying to remember all the details of the previous episode so I can understand how and why you're setting things up in a specific way. Awesome vid, mate. :-)

      @johnferguson7235 Před 7 lety +1

      A couple of the guys I watch on You Tube now divide up there videos into a couple parts and it increases their revenue and they make it easy to watch them in order. The next segment just comes up automatically so it is no problem.

    I like how these videos show all that the challenge it takes to build a car. Most videos I see cut quite a bit out hiding mistakes which make it gives the illusion that a person can have a godly mechanic skill. Watching you Eric shows that yeah you'll have issues like breaking a bolt and maybe have to take parts off multiple times to get the job done.

  • @MichaelGedies
    @MichaelGedies Před 7 lety

    My OCD kicked in when you only shimmed one side of the frame before final assembly.
    But after seeing the final result I am glad that you got everything dialed in. I know I would be relieved seeing the axle location being equidistant to the fender on each side. All that work surely paid off.
    I really enjoyed this series, and I hope you continue to do more build/fab videos. I like seeing the two sides to your mechanical abilities: repair and construction.
    Keep at it, bud.

    Hi Eric , to cut the small tubes on the assembly I use plumbers mini tube cuter to get a accurate line round a tube ,but you can't use it in all situations , as you show the tape idea works well. Looking forward to the next video

  • @reneneron2971
    @reneneron2971 Před 7 lety +3

    Read AND follow the instructions, Eric. Great progress. When using a plumb bob, measure from the 1" mark on the tape measure. Prevents moving the string and is more accurate anyway. A tape measure is accurate when measuring from the inside only when the end piece is under compression, and they get "sloppy" with use / abuse. Just remember to do this for both sides!

      And since advice is free, when measuring the depth for the crush sleeves, just put them in and scribe a mark with the sleeves inserted...that is the exact amount of material you need to remove. You can then transfer that depth using a ruler or, even better, a scriber (like a protractor). Much faster and more accurate. Old carpentry trick. And glad you showed the tape to mark when cutting a cylinder; deadly accurate.

    Hey Eric, first off... I love the fairmont videos. I've watched every one of them so far. So I wouldn't worry about trying to change your entire channel. You've got great content and people who say they want repair videos could just as easily watch these and learn something new as well. Secondly, I just installed a panhard bar on my mustang. I noticed that you had nice big wrenches to tighten down the lock (jam) nuts on either end. However, should you begin to hear a loud clunking noise after a few miles of driving and have trouble figuring out where it's coming from... go back and check those jam nuts! I found that mine had loosened up after driving so I went back and used some blue locktite on the threads. Haven't had a problem since! Keep up the great work and stay dirty

    One of the nice things about American classics / youngtimers: You can seriously improve drivability and agility by adding century old techniques. Techniques that were obsolete already in Japanese or European car designs when the car was build: The Panhard rod is pre WW-I (1908?). The Fox body was sold until 1993. Still didn't have such high tech inventions.

    amazing videos man!! i dont think people understand how much of a beast this car is going to be, and why it takes so long to do such an involved build. most people just do engine trans and new ecu. ur literally doing everything on the car. lets see them do it faster! aha great build man cant wait to see some burnouts!!!!

      Jakob Breazier If you can look into heavy plant machinery, 360 excavators big mining dump trucks hydrolic systems very useful too. Electric motors will not replace big diesel things any time soon like it is passenger vehciles. In the middle of a logging operation, pit mine or huge construction project somewhere there's no electricity unless it comes from a huge diesel generator. There is always work if you're prepared to travel, and big money to be earned. If some guy is losing tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of dollars per hour that a particular machine is down he will pay a lot to get it producing again. If you are the only guy that can do it, you can name your price. lots of variety, no to days the same. Engineering is awesome no matter which area you specialise in. I worked in a huge brewery and the production lines where amazing, when the went down company lost about $3k per minute. The guys that repaired them did very well indeed. Even the guy who was on call 24/7 to fix the forklift could charge huge money for simple fixes just because its 3am and the company needs that thing working now.
      Good luck with your career wherever you go and look after your back! You are never too young to ruin your back. Destroyed mine aged 24/25 and three years later I'm laying here waiting for surgery.

      Jakob Breazier Awesome, go for it, take full advantage of the sweet deals you get on tools as a student, buy the good stuff once and it will last a lifetime. By all means have fun, its a great time of life, but stay focused and dedicated it pays of so good in the future, I'm in a rough patch now but still doing ok in the long run, happily married for 5 years (its not for everyone!) Got a house and future prospects. My school lied to us and told us (my generation) not to bother learning a trade. they told us it was poorly paid and the only way to a good future was to go to university and and persue education for its own sake. Utter bullshit. All the people I know who are plumbers and electrians and mechanics etc are all doing great earning twice what everybody else does. All the literature and arts graduates are making coffee and burgers for minimum wage living with parents until their 40 or maybe rent a single room, with nothing better to do than drink what little money the do have every weekend. Cat is a solid business and company, I wish you all the best.

      And believe it or not, not much better than a solid axle with a torque arm and panhard bar/watts link. IRS from a 99-04 cobra sucks and isnt tgat good of a design compared to other cars that are designed with IRS frok the beginning

    Hello Eric, I did the shimmy test but I had the rear axle supported with jack stands and the front tires on the ground. The rear did not move at all and I do not have a pan hard rod, if your doing a demistration it should eliminate any factors that could affect it like having the rear tires on the ground.

    Hey Eric, just an FYI, the angle of the PHB doesn't matter a whole lot, certainly not the amount you have. The only thing the angle of the PHB is going to control is whether or not the lateral movement from the PHB's arc is going to be consistent in compression of the suspension as it is extension of the bar. Generally speaking, that is why you want the PHB mounted level unless you are on an oval track. Small angles wont matter much and if you are really paranoid about lateral axle movement then you should have bought a Watts link to begin with! The only downside with having one end higher is it will move at an angle rather than in an arc but at the small angle you have this will be minimal. Also, SOME angle can help fight engine torque rotating the rear axle assembly about the driveshaft on hard launches which is why on the 2005-2014 Mustangs the PHB was angled slightly downward on the driverside from the factory.
    Also, installing a PHB with a 4 link is a surefire way to destroy your torque boxes IF, and I want to reiterate the IF part, you have UCA's with anything but factory rubber bushings. The reason why is because the UCA's were angled inward to locate the axle laterally and they define an entirely different rear roll center than the PHB does. The roll center is, in effect, the point at which the suspension rotates. For a PHB it's the halfway point of the PHB, for the converging UCA's it's going to be the point at which lines drawn through the UCA's intersect. The UCA's definitely intersect above the PHB's RC and as the suspension compresses while cornering, it WILL force one of the UCA's to "change length". With factory bushings this is done through bushing compression but with aftermarket bushings it is done with the unibody (since the UCA is generally stiffer than the unibody). Generally speaking, if you want to run the PHB with an UCA and not a torque arm, you should yank the driver side UCA. This will still put A LOT of force into the unibody, but only because all of the pinion angle control is being done through the single UCA instead of both. It's far less stress than poly bushing UCA's (which are a no-no anyway) or rod end UCA's trying to change length due to conflicting RC's though! The best solution is, as you've done, a Torque Arm setup.
    These have been some epic videos. Stumbled into this series while looking at how to rebuild a T5 as well as tear down a 302 and rebuild it as I'm about to purchase a 89 GT that needs that work done due to a blown head gasket and bad lifter, as well as a notchy 2nd and grinding 5th gear.

    Hi Eric,
    I'm curious as to why you didn't just weld a piece of flat bar to the frame next to the bump stop to keep the surface level and add a little strength to the frame at the same time?
