Note how when she finds that peace at the end is the first time she goes past the tree to face the sea, the sun is out and she hasn’t cried so much. Beautiful song, there’s also a cyclical feel to the first section, in the melody and the rhythm. Great analysis Bryan 👍🏻
These animated Steven Wilson videos are always so poignant, and this is no exception. I'm not sure if I like it as much as Drive Home or The Raven That Refused to Sing, but it may just be because I saw them first. As for the music, this also isn't my favorite SW (the song and album in general), though it does have the typical qualities that make him such a great artist in general, especially all of the harmonic touches that create such a unique atmosphere and tone that's beyond the typical, easy dichotomies of happy/sad. I think the one thing that makes this song stand out from Wilson's past work is the extremely powerful, emotive climax. Wilson is usually more restrained, but I think it build-up/climax is quite well done, and the return to subtlety, especially with the beautiful harmonies and choral vocals over the acoustic guitar, is a lovely touch.
Man, this song... this song is intense. If you like this, you should check out the version on their live DVD, Home Invasion: In Concert at the Royal Albert Hall. It's a bonus track, and a rehearsal, so there's no audience but it is played live. And Ninet Tayeb does more of the singing. I love Jess Cope's videos, and I'm not saying that the rehearsal video is better, but it's different in some pretty impactful ways. So, if you liked this song, check out the live rehearsal.
Great analyse. Love Steven Wilson. There is some great videoes from the Raven album to. Drive home is one of them, with a fantastic guitarsolo(Guthry Govan)
Please check out the new single and it's music video from Rivers of Nihil's brand new album. Track is called The void from Which No Sound Escapes and I think you'd like it because it kind of has all the best qualities of the band in the same track. Here's the link to it: czcams.com/video/NF9J8NyA1ag/video.html
I'm a sucker for the waltz feel, particularly 6/8. One thing I've always loved about this song is the 5 feel as it leaves me hanging with that 2 in the second bar if you will, meaning that the main part of the composition gives a somewhat lack of resolve in the smallest meter possible. Great analysis.
Nice analysis! For me, not only 5/4 creates tension, but its also coupled into alternating two 5s of tension and two 5s of relief, which also reflects the split in the woman`s mood.
It's interesting how a music video can change your perspective on a song. The first time I listened to this album, this song didn't really stand out to me. After watching the video, I feel like the song clicked a lot more. Now every time I come back to it I'll be thinking about the video.
Man Steven Wilson doesn’t have a happy song and I love it. All of his stuff isn’t happy. It may sound happy but it isn’t. Porcupine tree, Steven Wilson solo nor storm corrosion have happy songs.

Gorgeously sad, heartbreaking and beautiful. Glad you got captured by it and still managed to keep a really good reaction and analysis together...
Honestly I think this week has produced some of my best breakdowns. Might have to start doing more music videos 😂
oh my god, dude, i thought you are Steven, good avatar picture
@@michaeltarasov4426 🤣
Seriously, you're not the first. Guess there's less flattering resemblances to bear 😊
Great reaction. Wilson is an amazing composer. This album “Hand Cannot Erase” is one of the best Prog albums of all time.

This is the most beautiful pairing of song/video I know. I've cried so much to this
Epic interpretation of the meter. You have revealed so much more of this song to me.
The whole album is one of my all-time favorites. Brilliant stuff.
Your reactions drew me to your channel. Your analyzes make me come back to it. 👍
Glad to hear it! I think this week might be some of my best analyses to date.

This song gets me each and every time
Perfect
Wonderful analysis of a wonderful song!
the part starting about 3:55 is very similar to one of the songs by his other project, Storm Corrosion... I am not sure which one, though :)

As a subjective reaction - loved it. Again, I can't help but be reminded of something else, and the vocals evinced David Longdon of Big Big Train.

Very nice. I'm hearing several influenced, but foremost Cardiacs.
Jess Cope ftw. What an incredible piece of work. On both sides.
*applause*
I can't listen to this song without ugly crying.
Me neither. Maybe his saddest song- which DOES say a lot.

Steven Wilson "Routine". Routine, Steven Wilson?
This is the dude that broke Opeth!😡
Nobody broke Opeth, stop being pathetic!
You're right! I'll never forgive him for Blackwater Park!
@@chim-choo-ree Yeah, terrible Album. That's why I got it on vinyl.

'Permanating' is pretty happy. 'Jupiter Island' too although lyrically I have no idea what that songs about.
Kinda like Katatonia - depressing music that still can make me so happy!... 😊
